Homework

Homework

Hey Team

I posted this article yesterday on my twitter page.  It is a blog talking about homework for students.  It asks if you are assigned too much homework and wonders if it actually hurts student achievement.

Read the article and then answer these questions:

1. Do you agree with the article? why provide a specific example?

2. Do you work as hard as the students mentioned in the article (staying up late everyday and waking up early to finish)
- How much time do you spend on work
- How much do you read on a nightly basis

3. Could your parents handle the work load?

4. Respond to 2 other students and challenge their assumptions on homework.

  3. Yes I agree because doing homework makes you think an it can take time especilly when you have a but load it can cause you less sleep and more stress to finish your homework plus if you stay up late to work you have to get up super early to get ready for school. and also doing homework the whole day can make it harder to sleep because your not using any energy you just sitting there not using your energy so you'll have a hard time sleeping with ton of energy left so i do agree with this statment

    ReplyDelete

    1. ACTUALLY energy is still you used even if you do the smallest amount of work

    2. yes but you'll be using a very little of it

    3. your response doesn't reference one specific incident from the article. You need to support your statement and demonstrate your understanding

    4. For example couple years before grade 8 we had a bunch of homework so i would stay up super late and work and i would still have my daily meals but when it comes to sleppy time it would take for ever to go to sleep also its true what said that if you stay up late you wake up early to get ready i have done that ALOT AND IT HAS TAKEN ALOT OF VALUABLE SLEEP I BARLEY GOT 8 HOURS AS RECOMMENDED

    5. How did you manage your time Eric ? Did you do the work when you got home and stay focus or did you take breaks to watch tv and play video games ECT.

      Delete
    6. I do my homework but I get stresses and need to move around so I take short breaks to relax

      Delete
    7. Perhaps that's why it seems as if you have so much . Because we procrastinate and stress out and suddenly we become over whelmed with the home work

      Delete
    8. No even if I take short 10 mins breaks doesn't mean I procrastinate some work we have deadlines with are like a week and I utilize my time wisely

      Delete
    9. Is it because you don't understand your homework ?

      Delete
    10. Naw I do get it but we all work at a certain level

      Delete
    11. Yes I understand we work at a certain level but if we understand the work why is it so stressful ? We should be able to do it then .

  4. yes i do agree with the article because i have seen my sister stress about home work and sometimes stays up to 4 am just to finish it and if anyone knocks she gets really angry for bothering her so i saw this effect right in front of my eyes. but my parents don't feel the strain so they keep on assigning so if they felt the strain, it would be devastating

    2. my parents dont know how to research things on the internet and they can't read properly or write in english and if my parents don't get sleep they blame it on us and we would get full force

  5. I agree with students having less or no homework because inn the article they were talking about that their 8 grade student was losing sleep by doing lots of homework but she was finishing it and the school was also worried that were they giving to much homework.

  7. Question 1
I do not agree with this article at all! I don't think that beaumonde heights has given us so much homework that we can not complete. Maybe we have gotten 4 or 5 home work, projects etc. together but I think that we could complete them. Sometimes people will stay up until 11,12 or 1 am but that might be their problem. I stayed up until 12:30 once doing my project but I don't think that it was so much and a huge load on me, but just that I didn't do it on a finer day instead of 12:30 am when the work was do in the morning.

  8. 2) no I do not stay up super late and getting up super early like they say in the article

-Also I spend about and hour of homework every or so days if we have any

-And lastly I do read on a nightly basis maybe not books but on the web like intriguing articles and Facebook comments plus we have twitter so i say do read on a nightly basis

  9. I agree with some parts in this article. In my opinion i think homework is good but there should be a minimum on how much us students are allowed to get . Homework is good for the extra practice and it helps are brain function more but when we have tons of questions in math and a language test due both on the same day things get a little hectic. But homework does help us get use to a concept on what were learning . Homework helps are education but there should be a limit on how much a child is suppose to get a day because if there is non a child might be stressed and overwhelmed with all the homework they have.

    ReplyDelete

    1. That is true but it's only what we make it . If you manage your time well and stay focus on your task you will get it done and we still have time to sleep on time and not wake up so early

      Delete
    2. Is it possible that the work load is so intense, that even when you manage your time responsibly with the correct amount of focus, that you still cannot get it finished? Have you ever had such a stressful amount of homework before?

      Delete
    3. I haven't had a stress-full amount of homework . But if you are focused on your work you should be able to get it done .

      Delete
    4. I'm pretty sure that all of us have. And since all of us did have stressful homework yup it might have token some time to get it finished, but because of the load is the reason why it was stressful.

      Delete
    5. I think we make it more stressful then it really needs to be . We overwhelmed ourself with homework and we make it a bigger deal then it has to be .

      Delete
  10. 1. Do I agree this happens within our school? Not really, if you ask 8A they have a minimal amount of homework. And we rarely get homework (80BEE). Coming here for my whole school life, I have come to realize that teachers usually give what ever is not done for homework. So most should be done, if not finished. So it's all on you. But in other schools, that teach a higher level (high school, university, etc) they may just get a lot of home work, but it depends on how you Handel it. All my siblings are in university,so I do know how much they get. But my siblings create a "schedule" for what class and how much times. It seems the girl in the article may have started a little later then some others would. So really it depends on who you are

  12. 1.Yes I agree with thIs article I have experienced this many times students do get over loads of homework. I haven't experienced it this year anyway It gets pilled up from many teachers like French, home room history, and science. It becomes a lot and I need to wake up in the morning, at times. And this is middle school imagine high school.

2.yes I did last year we did get a lot of homework and I did stay up to finish homework or projects . or I would bike to the store to get some supplies, I do get a lot of home work but not asmu h as the kids mentioned in this article, they are probably in high school. I had experienced what they did.

3.yeah they could my parents had gone to university so it isa100 times worse in university than it is in middle school. So I am pretty sure they would be able to handle it.

  16. Do you agree with the article? why provide a specific example?
-I agree with this example, We shouldn't get homework unless it is a project. In my opinion Homework is a waste of time, It's just a way to keep us busy. It's useless in my opinion because we are doing reviewing the same thing tomorrow at school anyway. Don't we as students deserve free time? To me yes it only seems fair.Direct quote- The first is from Karl Taro Greenfeld, who was growing concerned after watching his eighth-grade daughter wake up morning after morning, haggard and sleep-deprived from late nights of studying.Things had gotten so bad that Greenfeld and his wife would force their daughter to go to bed, only to have her pretend to sleep, get up again and do more homework. I think Homework is useless and a waste of time.

    7. Have you ever been as stressed as the girl in the article about getting homework done? How does your experience with homework support your position.

      Delete
    8. I agree with rajveer. Homework helps us practice the concept of the things we learned so we could get the hang of it . In the article http://www.sedl.org/pubs/sedl-letter/v20n02/homework.html it simply states that homework helped students achieve more in their academics . It also stated that we shouldn't have so much and that there should be a time limit on how much homework we get

      Delete
    9. Homework, in my opinion, is merely review that helps you understand the problems and solutions just a little better, yet not much help. It is somewhat beneficial to us, by helping us improve our skills, but I don't think we need 50 pages to improve on the task given! It should be kept short, so we don't lose focus nor interest, yet enough for us to actually use our brains for our problems.

      Delete
    10. Homework helps us practice are skills so its easier for us n the future . Although you are right we should have a certain amount of homework .

      Delete
  17. Well... I don't exactly agree to this article. But sometimes I would. We don't really get so much homework. Even though we have other teachers for other subjects, we don't really get a lot of homework. I don't know about other schools, but in BHJMS we don't.

    2. Of course Its okay to give some amouts of homework but its never okay to give us so much homework to the point where we stressed or even waking in the middle of the night to do homework\

      Delete
    3. I don't think we should get a lot of homework. I'm pretty sure most of the students would like our amount of homework to stay just the way it is. If it was less homework, that would be great! But too much will just make us feel bored and we won't want to do our homework.

    4. If you were in a school with overload work what would you do?

    11. Homework is what you would do to study, or it would be work teachers give us to do. Unfinished work is of course school work that you haven't finished. If we ever get homework, it would mostly just be work we didn't finish. It's not really work that we HAVE TO do at home.

    12. We don't have to do homework . But it's benefiting us in understanding our academics

      Delete
    14. Yeah true....I totally agree with you guys....we don't have that much home work to make us run crazy.

      Delete
  18. I do not exactly agree with the article. Maybe there are places in this world where there is overload work which would be a way of torturing students. I am not saying students should not get home work I am just saying not too much home work. Too much work would basically lead to pressure. As they gave an example a parent tried doing his daughter's work for a week and he found it terribly hard. A parent has lived more than a child if they find this work hard how will the students find the work? For few students they don't mind doing work until late night, though they don't think about how this will effect their health. There many problems in working up till late night and waking up early. It effects the health as well as the student. Though there are schools where there is not too much home work, where kids can do their work as well as live their life. A student getting too much work and staying focused on one thing, would be like a flower which cannot bloom. As related to today's quote, students would start judging each day the same, each day of torture rather than living that day. Sometimes students get a habit of doing work that if they don't have work they will do extra from home.
It is important to get home work so we don't ruin our life in future but it is also important to focus on other things too.

  21. 2. Personally, I may not study as much as the kids in the article do. Homework wise, I just start at 4:00 just so I have some time to take a break. I don't necessarily set some sort of time for homework. I just finish it in the amount of time I need. The most time I have spent would be an hour (including previous years). Me and reading are not "friends". I find reading one of the most boring-est things on the planet. But that's only reading books and novels. Unless you count Twitter one of your reading resources. Other the that, reading is alright.

  22. We can all agree that homework is great, beneficial, and helps us develop our knowledge to certain things that would help us become better into the future. But there is a breaking point of giving way to much homework. In which i do agree with the circumstances of giving less homework. Like what happened to the girl, in her bed constantly studying and doing homework. Now that's what you call hard work, Im not saying homework is bad or anything like that, but i just think that we should have at least a 1hr to 1-30hr and a half studying a day.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1) Yes I agree with this article because it shows a reason for students to complain about the amount of homework and what the students goes through at school. It shows that the parents should be nagging at their child for when he/she complains about the homework it gets. For example the father doing her daughter's homework for a week. The father now she's what his child goes through. And he even said “It's killing me.”

I know I have to stay clam when I have things due or I make myself stressed out . I schedule my time so that I have time to sleep at a good time and I wake up in the morning to study but only if its mandatorily usually I am finished my homework before 6 or 7 and it takes me around an hour and thirty minutes or more depending what I have for homework that day. I read every night wether its a book or a magazine or the Internet . Twitter and Facebook always have story's and articles being posted and even if I'm still reading a little tweet or post it gives me information not only about what's going on in the world but also little facts so even if Its on the internet it gives me the same information or fantasy a book would or a magazine .

  26. Yes, I do agree with this article. It is very true that whenever we get a lot of homework, we start to give ourselves a lot of pressure and start getting mad at our teachers for giving us a lot of homework. It is okay if we get a little homework. What I mean to say is that we should get homework, but homework that u can finish in about 1-2 hours, not homework that we have to do until midnight. That would just be extra work, plus it will give everyone stress.

  27. Yes I can agree for the most part that the article is right. For example it's true that we get a lot of homework most times but we have been doing it for a few years now and it shouldn't be a huge problem. The only big problem with homework is that if you give to much and to much time there will be procrastination. Thats why the little girl in The article stays up all night and gets up early morning to finish it. Because for sure she didn't start on it the minute she got home. I know this. Because I've done the same things. But to stop the the procrastination you need less home work and less time to do it.

  28. Yes, I agree with this article, because Homework is basically review, after review, after review. Yes, you improve when you continue to do it after a while, but is it really necessary to give a poor girl 79 pages and call it 'light'? Loads if homework place immense stress on students who actually want to pass, and teachers who check the homework every day, of every week.Like Suhaib said, my sister had gone through hell after receiving large amounts of homework every night, and went as far as to kick me out of the room we shared and had me put up tons of "GET OUT" signs or "KNOCK FIRST" for her. She would spend all of her time studying, the wake up early every morning just to go to the gym. I'd be dead by now if I were in her place!

  30. I agree with this article because too much homework can encourage cheating because children end up copying off one another in an attempt to finish all their assignments. They then end up being rewarded for cheating which doesn't benefit them at all

  31. Usually, I don't stay up late, and wake up in the morning to finish my homework. The only time I would do that is if we have a project to finish. I don't read on a nightly basis. Maybe I would read on the days when I really have nothing to do. Or if it was part of homework.

  32. 1.I disagree with this article. Its hard to believe but I honestly disagree. As students we do get a lot of homework, but in reality its really not that much. At times we over exaggerate the fact that we are given too much homework, we choose to believe that we are not going to finish our work, therefore you don't finish your work on time before your curfew. Our generation is all about technology. If you where to ask how many students here in beaumonde own a smartphone, more than half the school would raise their hand. I have an iPod so I would know that everytime i'm doing homework, every minute i'll either play games, go on my facebook, iMessage my friends, and do all of that stuff just on my iPod thats next to me. Many students would do that to, this slows them down from actually completing our homework. There are also people who would watch TV and do there homework on the same time. It is proven that you actually move twice as slower finsihing your homework while watching TV. At times, we also wouldn't understand our work given to us. For instance, Math is pretty difficult for many students. At times students spend almost an hour just to solve the question. It just wastes time. In Conclusion, I disagree with this article because as Students we have many distractions at home that makes us slow down, we dont understand the work we are doing, or we are just to lazy to do our work. We just don't use our time efficiently, because if we did, we wouldn't spend time really waking up in the morning, or working on our homework after our bedtime.

  33. #1. Yes, I do agree with this article for many reasons because I have experience doing homework and I don't think its as beneficial as people think. One of the the reasons I say that is because I learn a whole lot better when I am in class, I mean the teacher is their to help you and educate you on what your doing, but when your at home on your own you don't have the teacher their with you

#2 To be honest, I don't work as hard as them every night, I only work super hard when I have something due the next day and it's not done. On a regular basis I would work for an hour, hour and a half at most. Most of the nights I would read like a page long article on www.nba.com

#3. No, I don't think my mom would maybe to handle the work load. I think that because she has so much things on her mind to worry about already.

My parents have already went through school and learn the concept of everything so there much more wise then I am . But it would be harder for them to learn a second language mostly because my parents don't know French and it would be hard to learn .

  37. Do you work as hard as the students mentioned in the article (staying up late everyday and waking up early to finish). How much time do you spend on work. How much do you read on a nightly basis.
    - No I am honest I don't work nearly as hard because I don't get homework and I wouldn't deprive myself of sleep for such a useless cause. I spend around 1 hour to 1hr and 30 minutes doing my homework(Ill also be eating and take breaks doing randomness) But ill do it just in periods of time. But I usually don't get alot of homework anyway(THANK GOD) so I'm happy :)
I read on a daily bases for 30 minutes a day if I am in the mood(Most of the time). I read novels and I read articles online, the news, etc. I like reading but not out loud, I find it better in my head so I can vision the scene.

On the other hand of reading I don't nessecarly love reading. I might read random things around the house but not a specific book every day. I do go on twitter and read other peoples tweets, see what's going on around the world on stuff like YouTube, weather network and other news and websites.

  39. Question 2: Basically I do not work as hard as it has mentioned in the article. This is because we don't often get too much work. Some days I do sleep at like 1:00pm and wake up early to do work, but that kind of situation only appears when I don't finish my work before and do it on the last moment or when I am not at home and gone to do something important such as the doctor or a wedding. I usually spend like 4 hours on work. If my school work gets done than I do extra work, if I am too bored. I don't like it if there is no H.W because I am used to work. though I won't like it if there is a lot of work because that just means no time for freedom. I occasionally spend around 45 mins for reading. ( If that book is interesting and I only read at night time because its fun specially if its a horror book)

) We'll apparently I heard the amount of time your suppose to spend or talents the limit is about an hour and 30 min. But some days for me like yesterday the amount of time I speeded on my homework was about 2 hours and 10-15 min.

  41. 2. I do work as hard on my homework most of the times. I just want to get good grades at school. At times I may be really lazy to do my homework because im probably facetiming a friend on my iPod, or dont want to miss my favorite show :D. Rather than that, I do give in my best work, i give in effort. At the times when I become lazy or didnt finish my homework, i'll probably wake up early in the morning or stay up after my bedtime.

    - I usually take atleast 1-3 to do my work everyday. The least would be 15 minutes the most would probably be like 5-6 hours(Usually if im studying, watching Tv, distractions or etc...)

-On a nightly bases, I usually read 2 times a day. I read to improve vocabulary, or to keep me entertain :)

  42. Yes I do agree with this article. I have to stay up late at night finishing my homework or partly completing my projects. I feel enervated and worn out in the morning before I go to school again. There is no point of assigning homework to students. The school hours should just be a few hours longer so that teachers don`t have to assign homework at all! That way students get their time to relax and have fun. Homework is just a way of putting a whole stack of stress on top of all of the other stresses we have in life and it isn`t something necessary. It`s like thinking that our whole entire lives are being spent reading and doing homework. We already have 6 hours of school, and on top of that we get homework that we finish late at night or early in the morning. Then we go back to school again, and this process continues. It makes no sense. Im worried about the amount of homework and stress i`ll be in after a couple of years.

  45. 2.) we all work as hard as that girl if not more. It just depends if we are willing and excited about the work. The only reason she works night and early morning is because she procrastinates. I don't really spend a huge amount of time and I can't really tell you how much time I put into it because it all depends on the homework itself. If it's a lot I'll do 3/4 and finish it next morning that's only if I get bored. If it's small I'll just finish it quick or sometimes I would be lazy and do it all the next morning if it was not a lot of homework. How much do I read? I really can't say I read a lot nearly nothing I don't even pick up a book. The only thing i read is my Facebook and Twitter feeds.

    1. Maybe Beaumonde doesn't give out such a stressful amount of homework, but say that we all got in trouble, and Mr.Cheney assigned triple amount that night, and whoever doesn't get it done will serve detention, how stressed will you be?

    2. Well... If mr. Cheney gave us a lot of homework. I would try my best to keep up. I may be kinda stressed. But I would have to do the homework instead of having detention. What would you have done if this would have happened?

  50. 1. I would probably agree with this article because based off of my objectivity, since homework tires out students, they want to try and simplify their work so they don't have to put in much effort which later on affects the student's performance. For example, if the student is given a journal prompt, for homework constantly, the student would try to start dropping out some important elements of writing because they are in a rush to finish and want some time to relax.

    2. I think if I were to compare myself with the girl who was mentioned in the article, I wouldn't necessarily say that I work as hard since what her example of a small amount of work would be a lot compared to what we get from school. Although, I do spend about 1 to 2 hours finishing off my homework including revision unless I have a project which comparatively takes way more time than regular question and answer work. That would probably be lesser than what that girl spends on finishing her work. Additionally, I do aim for at least 45 minutes of reading daily from any book or any new article on the web except for days where I don't finish for a longer time.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yes, I do stay up late night to finish my homework. But that would be only 1 or 2 times in a month. I usually finish my homework before 8:00 am. But it all depends on how much homework I have/ how easy or hard it is for me. I spend at least 2-4 hours doing homework, and I have to do reading daily. At least for 1 hour and if it late then 30 mins.

      Delete
    2. Yes but sometimes. If I know that I have to go somewhere, and I have no chances of staying at home to finish it then I would give myself a time limit and make a plan. Like what I will do first, estimate how long it will take me. Then what I will do next and how long will that take me… this really helps me finish my work fast.

    3. We know the effort is essential and the half of the class who did do it is going to get the higher marks. Unlike the other half.

  53. Answer 1: I disagree with this article because I don't think homework is such a big pressure and besides its not always hard the homework we get is what we learn about at school so it shows how much we understand. I am not trying to say we should get lots of homework but in my opinion their should be a limited amount of homework so a student shouldn't stress out. I believe doing homework is a good way of learning and understanding the task gives. it doesn't really matter if we have to stay up at night to finish it at least your doing it for your own good and better marks. It shows your responsible enough to complete any task assigned especially when it come to your marks. I always comeback from school and start working util night depending if we have lots or lest amount of homework cause I want to be successful and I am pretty sure everyone wants to be successful too so working is benefiting your self for a good and its want you believe and i also think working hard is what we are so post to do and I don't think it should be names stress at all.

  54. 3. I don't think my parents would be able to finish my homework because half the subjects we learn, they do not know what they are or even maybe won't be able to understand.

    1. what if they do understand would you let them do your work?

    2. Most probably it would be a no because even if they do understand it could be either that they misunderstood it or can't answer it thoroughly.

      Delete
  55. 1. Yes I agree with this article because usually students take a lot of stress of their work and they want to do more and expand their work, when they see the load of homework they have, they tend to take the shortcut to finish their homework. For example some students who fail the homework fail the class because they find the homework too time consuming and never finish it or turn it in. There are also pros to homework like homework is useful for teachers to watch the students progress. Also for the teachers to see if the students understand the lessons the teachers are giving.

    2. If I would compare myself to the students in the article I would say I don't work so hard because the students have more subjects to do and practice for more test and quizzes. Everyday I take about 30 minutes to do my homework, but if I have a project or assignment to do I would take longer than an hour. Everyday I try to read at least for 30 minutes or 40 minutes, but if I have more time to read I continue to read for as long as I can.

    3. I think my parents would not be able to handle the work load because from where my parents migrated from their style of education and learning skills are way different than Canada's education. In which they will have difficulty doing the homework we get.

It could be possible that they have done a certain subject or a part of that subject in their school, but maybe not in the format that we have to do it in. So it was difficult for them and us.

    4. Don't you think living here they might have adapted to Canada's education

    5. Just because living here does not mean they will adapt or take in Canada's education sysytem.

      Delete
    6. Parents do adapt to Canada's education has time passes by, but many parents don't get time to learn the education system has well in which they are fully comfortable with everything there children are learning because many parents don't come to study in Canada. They work in factory and different places for their own children to have a better life. I can tell this with evidence because when my parents migrated to Canada they both had to start working, to earn money for a good life. Even though my mom wanted to become a nurse she had to continue working for a better future for me.

      Delete
    7. No but taking care of there kids will they must have seen how much homework you get

      Delete
    8. Jackie also has a good point. Many parents don't take the interest in knowing the education system since many parents are busy working. Some parents don't understand Canada's system because when you migrate from one country to another many things change so fast and so much in which it takes a few years to understand some what of the education system and how it works.

2 I don't really stay up late or wake up early to finish homework ,only if its something that's due on that very day, I do my work about 2 hours after school ended. I don't take much time on my work usually an hour it depends on what kind of homework I have.I don't read allot I just watch TV or watch videos online ,I read when I'm assigned to read a book and write a summary of it.

3 If I gave my parents to do my homework they would understand most of the lessons that I've been taught but since my parents were born and raised in India they must've learned something different than me and not the same things because when I ask my Mom to help me she doesn't get it.
