The Power of Music

The Power of Music

"I Was Here" was our winning inspirational song but is music really an instrument of change?

Is music an effective way to change the world and make it a better place?

Is music a good way to get people to change? Provide a specific example to justify your position?

When you are finished making your post get involved with some dialogue with other students.

  1. I personally believe that songs certainly catches your attention, but doesn't necessarily change. This song was published in 2012, and it was my 1st listening to it was when Ronella suggested it to you. When I watched the video for my 1st time I felt powerful. But the song could of had more views then it has (25,594,210 compared to 1,839,925,293 <gangnam style) The song works nicely, but this song has kind of failed to prove its point.

    1. Thats only because people didnt find out about this song right away. Just like abby said " One day we can listen to song and say, I will make a diffrence, when we say that majority of times thats just sitting on our devices liking photos on Facebooks, Retweeting tweets on Twiiter, Sharing photos on Instagram and etc.". We could do this with the video, and the same thing as Gangnam style can happen. More views and maybe even more likes

    2. you seriously thinks that this song failed to prove it's point!?
This song talks about leaving this world with footsteps, saying "i have done something for somebody", and you thinks this song failed?

      Delete
    3. But why wasnt this song found right away (question mark) You said it can motivate people, This song never motivated us until Ronnella introduce us to it. By the way, Gangam style is popular because of its dance moves, not the meaning.

    4. This song did not fail to prove its point ! Silly songs like gangam style fail to make a point . But i was here sends a very deep and specific message

    6. I kinda agree with Ronnella because the song did send a message to many people especially me. But the song itself kinda did failed so I am half half on Ronnella comment. The singer herself didnt do anything to leave her mark besides becoming a celebrity. Basicclly im saying that the message fulfil its purpose, but the singer hasnt.

    7. ok. maybe beyonce didnt share it. but at least we can!

    8. MORE than half of the viewers didn't understand gangam style

    9. She has done things to fufil her purpose she gives money to charity such as the Survivor Foundation to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. , she also helped the Women's Fund for Scotland and much more ! She has made a mark on this earth for great reasons not only singing

    10. what i actually mean't to say is that song proves a great message!!! But it is not a affective way to share a good cause. They could of like advertised it or something. What i meant to say was gangnam got over a billion views for stupidness ^agreed. But if gangnam style was able to catch peoples attention, how come this song wasnt?

      Delete
    11. i agree with rochelle.
all gangam style is a song where people jump around makeing an X with their hands and an imaginary rope.
but this song has a DEEP and POWER FULL meaning to it.what will you be known for after you pass away?!?!?!?

      Delete
    12. It might not have caught everyone's attention but it caught most . I believe it only takes one person to change the world. Although it did not get a ton of views it still affected the ones who did

      Delete
    13. ok people! just if you didn't noticed this video was sang on humanitarin day, this is not the orignal!
Abby: Beyonce is a legend! she is doing somthing for the world, she did something right infront of your eyes! Beyonce sang this song so that people ifes will be changed! So if she leaves this world today atleast she did something, what you did? :)

      Delete
    14. listen to the song more than once and im pretty sure you'll be able to convince others

    15. Boredom is human flaw and we have to move on, it may motivate you know but won't motivate you in the future because of boredom

      Delete
    16. If we like the song we will listen to it alot until we get bored. But the message is strong enough to stay in our heads suhaib.

      Delete
    17. My point to this was it spreads the message but not effectifly. I was using gangnam style of a song who has made it somewhere, and that it is possible to go more then 1 million views,

      Delete
    18. No boredom is a powerful emotion it will make the song be boring and then so will the message

      Delete
    19. You'll always get bored no matter what

      Delete
    20. The questions were " Is music a good and effective way to change the world" And "Is music a good way to get people to change". Ever since Mr.C introduced this song to the class have you done something that has "marked your place"

      Delete
    21. Bordem means your bored but no matter what the message is strong and it will stay. No matter how broing the song gets it will always have that message that is strong

      Delete
    22. i agree with rochelle so what if the song gets boring the message is passed on
just like gangam style so one understands it and it is a year old but is still listened to!

      Delete
    23. Ronnella: If Beyonce was to leave this world today, the only thing she left behind was her being famous. What does being famous have anything to do about helping out the world (question mark) How does being famous help out people who are straving (question mark)

      Delete
    24. You'll get bored of the message, you don't live forever so you have to get bored because life is limited and you can't get stuck on one message

      Delete
    25. gitie: So you expected to us to do something right away just as soon as mr. cheney showed us the video? like just get up off our chairs and say "ima say the world!"

      Delete
    26. The songs serves its purpose^ agreed
But my 1st time watching it FULLY was in class, and the song and its video is a year old. Accourding to google there is 7n BILLION people in the world! 7 billion and around 2 million have seen it?!?!?1 Tell me that is effective

      Delete
    27. No you will get bored of the song .

      Delete
    28. Ronnella thats not what she means. She means if we actually set up some goals to leave a mark .

      Delete
    29. Ronella: lol no But its been almost a week, if your were seriously motivated, you would have by now. And we have proof you have known the song longer, have you done something to "mark your spot"?

      Delete
    30. pick one song in the whole world i bet it would probably be your favourite song and you listen to it more than 5 times. so if you think that this song will get old and forgotten it will i agree but in the time it is popular it will create a change i promise. all it needs is more people to watch etc.!!!!!!!

      Delete
    31. abby: Beyonce is a legend! She got milllions of fans and i'm pretty sure her fan doesn't just like her because she is famous. I have and favourite rapper and i don't like him because he is famous but because he raps about hope and the truth!

      Delete
    32. The song and the message is connected once song is boring the message is boring understand?

      Delete
    33. Gitie: the question is can music change the world and not can "i was here" change the world!

      Delete
    34. Ronella: Yes I know, but I was Here was my key example. The song spreads a great message, but the song never got "advertised" enough, its been a year and it was my 1st time listening to it a couple of days ago. And assuming you have known the song louder, have you done anything to mark your spot?? Because if you did, then yes the mission of this song was accomplished. If you did not, then this kind of proves my point that music is not the #1 way to spread a cause.

      Delete
    35. Gitie: but if JB sang this song, whould've you make a change?

      Delete
    36. It would make her change because she was engagged in it more. Because someone she loved sang it

      Delete
    37. Ronella: if JB sang it,I would probably do something to make a Difference. If you check out his twitter there is some contest thing where if you make a donation you get ENTERED to join a contest to do a meet and greet. And a while back he tweeted a large amount of money that got donated for a CHANCE to meet him. Not even verified. He has a lot more publicity! His song confident is number 1 right now and the song came out at 12 AM last night, literally. He has a lot more publicity, he is inspired to make a change.

      Delete
    38. He has the power to make a change! A song will certainly catch your attention, but not everyone will be totally motivated to make a change, like mr,Cheney always says you wave that finger.

      Delete
    39. Publicity will capture attention but byonce was atleast able to capture some ones . Out of all just beibers fans how many are actually making a difference everyday because of him ? It really dose not t matter how many fans he has it more matters about how many of those fans were inspired and are actually going to make a change with there lives.

      Delete
    40. That may be so but JB is actually making a change! His concert tickets don't fully profit to him, majority of it goes to a variety of charity's, you went to his, did you not? His music will not maybe motivate anyone, but he has his ways. I personally would be affected more then Beyoncé. I still think music is not the right way to make a change

      Delete

    41. Gitie: so your trying to say Justin can change people? Hmm does Justin make music? Umm yes! ...I thought u said music can't change people and the world. And also beyonce is a better inpiration than Justin you can tell by the Grammys!

      Delete
    42. I agree mannat because half of the people don't understand the song but how did that get so popular and a good song like I was here how didn't that get popular.

      Delete
    43. But Justin won the diamond award.... His song will certainly "travel" more then Beyoncé. Music isn't the right way but he will catch more attention.

      Delete
    44. Gitie: justin is just having his days and so did beyoncè. She was so boss! And still is. But this isn't about justin its about music!

      Delete
    45. Yes back to the topic, music is not the best way to get people to cange. It will CERTAINLY catch their attention. But us a audience may be like OMG IM GONNA CHANGE!!!! when in reality, you are just replaying that song. That spreads awareness, but how are you so sure the audience will actually try to make a change?

  2. This song is really inspirational, it sends a really great message and gives others an idea of what the artist/singer is trying to send. I wouldn`t say music is an effective way to change the world to make it a better place. Music is great, but it`s not very effective because even though this song spreads a message, it wouldn`t change the world. Everything is still the way it is. Music wouldnt change others. One day we can listen to song and say, I will make a diffrence, when we say that majority of times thats just sitting on our devices liking photos on Facebooks, Retweeting tweets on Twiiter, Sharing photos on Instagram and etc. Music can encourage try us to do something, but it wouldnt have a say of being an effective way.

    1. Music is very effective . We feel something when the music is good and we engage in it more . Would you say a 3 minute speech would be more effective ?

      Delete
    2. It wouldn't change the world but it can help people in many ways, like the people who starve and etc

      Delete
    3. It wouldnt change the world . But i could change the people and if the people change for the better the world will also change

      Delete
    4. Again boredom will make you move on

      Delete
    5. Again the message is strong enough to stay

      Delete
    6. Rochelle: A speech isnt effective at times, but Music isnt either. The only hing you feel from the Music is Beyonce, what happens if Rebecca Black where to sing this song(question mark) I am 99.9% sure wouldnt listen to this song guranteed.

Srushti: Our world is getting wroser by the minute.. NOt even the world. I will narrow it down to our own community Rexdale. In Rexdale there is so much violence, poverty, and etc happening that you wouldnt believe ! Do you think that one song would change that(question mark)

      Delete
    7. Abby : we might forget the song but the song has a very strong meaning that will stick in our minds forever . I dont think it matters how many people listen to it . It matters more what people are doing because of it . It only takes one person to change the world .

      Delete
    8. Rochelle boredom is stronger than almost any thought, it is an emotion and it is impossible to get rid of, you need something to do every second

      Delete
    9. Bordem might be strong but so is the message so please tell me how this message isnt strong ! It will always be no matter how boring it gets it will still be strong

      Delete
    10. we are not talking about being bored here we are talking about if songs can make people change? not this song any song in the world can make some one change or something change
      !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Delete
    11. It does take one person to change a world. But thatss usually when they see what is happening themseleves. Did Martin LUther King use a song to inspire him NO. Did Nelson Mandela use a song to inspire him NO. How about Abereham Lincon (question mark) How about John F Kennady (question mark)

      Delete
    12. Songs are words , martin luther king said a speech a speech has words there for it is the same thing just one has a beat in it

      Delete
    13. Boredom is an emotion the message is a thought and emotions are stronger than thoughts so when your angry the message is blocked when your sad the message is blocked and when you only listen to the song it is remembered. I am 100% guarantee that once you go home and start playing the message will be forgotten until Monday or when you listen to the song

      Delete
    14. Bordem might me an emotion but we have many of them . The song yes might get boring ... But the message is still there so no matter how boring the song is the message still means something , You have no eveidence bordem is a feeling but we could think and feel two different things

      Delete
  3. Music can be a good way for people to change . I think music can convince someone faster than a speech would. That's because it can bring someone's attention right away compared to other things. There is a quote "Where words fail... music speaks". I think this is actually true.

      Delete
    3. maybe we can do something about it. share the video. do something!

      Delete
    6. Pooja: Thats exactly what Im talking about!! We say this song will motivate us and make a diffrence but all we going to do is share this video on Facebook, Retweet it on Twitter etc..

Ronnella: Thats why I`m saying this song isn`t an effective way to realise this message. I doubt they listen to Tyga :p

      Delete
    7. i know people do that. but we can do the same FOR A REASON

      Delete
    8. Abby it might give most of us a reality check and thinking what can i do to change the world

    9. You'll get bored of the song it doesn't matter when you like it when you do bored, boredom will change the way you think about the song

      Delete
    10. oh your really doubt that? Someone who is involved in violence would listen to this song? This song is to make people realise we need to do something for someone so our marks will be left!

Rochelle: Your right it can, but what would you do Rochelle. You heard this song last weak and I dont see you doing anything that is helping out our community

Ronnella: Yeah, but you heard this song long before us..... what have you done to leave your mark (questioin mark)

      Delete
    13. rochelle is right. sometimes people would call a song "boring". and then after a few months or so when they hear the song again, they would be like "i remembrer this song. i love it!!! "

      Delete
    14. Oh ok, you doubt they listen to tyga?..So you think people who is involved in violence listens to "i was here"?

There are many strong emotions that over power bordem . What are you saying the songs boring ? because the song could become boring but the message is stilll there ether way so stop saying its boring ! We get it the song becomes boring but the message is always strong and there !

      Delete
    18. this isnt the only people can get bored of. oh and just because the song got boring, doesnt mean the message is like "nothing" to us anymore

      Delete
    19. The Message is Strong I agree. But a song is not effective. Like realistlicy we wouldnt just change our attitude. And Rochelle your right, I dont see, but Have you set some goals to change the world (question mark) Have you set some goals to do something abuot this violence and troubles in the worold

      Delete
    20. But abby you know the question is can "music" change the world right?..why you refering to i was here overall?...And on top of that don't you want to do something for somebody else in the future?

      Delete
    21. Abby effective songs allow you to connect with it straightaway and bring you into it's world. You don't have to be 'in the mood' to connect with it, but rather it would draw you in. Didn't this song draw you in?

      Delete
    22. I would disagree because if I listen to a inspirational song it won't change me I will change me when I want to when I am motivated towards changing.

  4. 1. I assume that different types of music, have different effects. Such as, when there is inspirational music, people get effected and they actually understand the message and help to make the world better. Such as this song, I can bet that over 50% of people may have cried on this song, and had gotten motivated to make a difference.

    3. well I actually meant that it effects many people emotionally. And I didn't say everyone, at least like 20% of people will have the idea to help. It's not that everyone can will make a difference. But a few people making a difference does help.

  6. I think music is a very effective way to make the world a better place .Some songs don't make any sense but inspirational ones like i was here sends a very deep and inspirational message to everyone. For an example I was here sends a message . What will you do to mark your spot in this world . Will you do something ? what do you want to do to make a difference in the world, even when your no longer here.
Music is a very good way to get people to change . Music is very catchy and makes us listen more. If someone were to give a three minute speech about changing the world most of us wouldnt remember what the message was in less than 2 weeks , But if it was put into a song i think most of us would remember it more , Not only the song but the message it delivers if we like a song , we might just listen to the song receptively because we enjoy it . What we don't know is that when we listen to it we memorize the lyrics and the message and our brains execute what's known .
Over all music is very catchy , fun , up beat and has very deep messages . If you were listing to a soul full gospel song it will teach you to love god, if you were listening to a heart repairing song it might make your heart repair. Ether way music makes us change because we engage in it more.

  7. in my opinion i think yes. many people listen to music, every day more than 500 songs are listened to and are downloaded. plus music is something many people use in their day and life. it is catchy and quite easy to remember.
the most popular song was gangam style it got more than 1,840,486,317 views! the song was not even understood by more than half the viewers but is still SUPER popular and stuck in the minds of people.
only if a quarter of the viewer watch an inspirational video like this, i believe that many people would stop doing the smallest of the bad things. such as littering on the streets or even stopping bullying to each other.
only if a song as touching, goose bumping and as emotional would be made with a lot of publicity i think it would get more views as well as more change in the world.

  8. Is music an effective way to change the world and make it a better place?

I think music is a way to change a few people in this world because not everybody will change by listening to a song and other people that don't know English can't really understand songs that aren't in there languages.Like the song "We Are The World " the song was made for people all around the world to stop wars and racism and respect each other but hardly anyone knows that song today and I think just by listening to a song no one is going to change because it's just a song it can't stop you from fighting or war.

  9. I think that the music effects people in different ways. It all depends on what the music is like and what message/story it tells the people. This is the best explain. I am very sure that this song has influenced a lot of people. Influenced them to make a difference in this world.

It may move you but I don't think that it would be powerful enough to change you (unless you crazy for Beyoncé ) even through it changed you a bit it would return to just being a song and you would be your old self again. The more and more you watch the song the less meaning it has because you over watched it and get tired of the song

  11. Is music a good way to get people to change? Provide a specific example to justify your position?

I guess because if people want to change a song would inspire them like the song "I was here" the meaning of that song is people all over the world helped one another and they died helping people in need, like when there was a huge earthquake and tsunami in Japan. This song would inspire a few people to make the world a better place but not everybody would change there would still be violence. To me if you wanted some one to change I think they need someone they care about or someone so important to them to change them.

To the people who misunderstood my anwser

The question basically asked "is music a affective way to change the world and make it a better place". And i said no, I mean it spreads the message and everything nicely, it stays in your head, But how would we be sure everyone seen it?!?!?!?!?!?! We know there's a lot more them 1 million people on this world who has access to youtube (proven by gangnam style). If G.S spreaded so easily, how come "I Was Here" could'nt?

    2. I totally agree with Dhavani, this is because there are many songs in this world we haven't heard that won't mean they aren't popular or they are not known. Just like that this song may have been popular in many places last year, it could be we didn't know.

    3. But did you guys hear the song before mr.cheney made it a winner?

    5. Yes. I know that . But it takes one person to change the world , the one person could change millions of minds just like the song was affective that person could be too.

    6. That is true, but to succeed that one person would need support. It wouldn't be possible to make a difference if there weren't people on his side.

I think it depends on the person you want to change because there are some people that just change and others that just think songs are useless. It's there life so if they want to change by a song go ahead ,I wouldn't say music is a bad way to change people but it is a way to change people.

  20. I believe that music can change the world because music changes people. Who makes the world a better place and creates the environment we live in? Humans, we do of course. Music is heard everywhere and almost anywhere. Since it is heard that much, it will most definitely leave an impact on people The songs and lyrics that artists and musicians create have a message and meaning behind them. Those artists hope that one day, their words will inspire a change within the world and humans. The combination of good lyrics, instrument, rhythm, and voice is what makes a powerful song. Powerful songs can help change humans. I know that music is a very effective way to send messages around the world. Songs are easier to remember then a long lecture or speech.
This song for instance "I was here" is very inspirational. It sends a clear message of what Beyonce wants the world to know. What will you do to mark your place? How will you be remembered when you are gone? You want to leave no regrets when you leave this world.. how will you leave your tracks? How are you able to make a difference? What's the proof you will leave behind? How will people know that you were here?
This is why we have different genres for music. Every genre refers to a different piece and part of life, a different message. Some songs are lyrics to change who you are, to be a better person, some songs can be for the ones you love, some are full of hatred, and some are just to spread joy and happiness.
Point is, I KNOW music will change people. And when people change, the world changes as well. People always have dreams and images of changing the world and making it a better place for everyone, though they aren't sure how to do it or where to start. I believe that the start of making the world a better place or the most efficient way to create a change in the world we live in would be music.

  21. Q1) "I Was Here" was our winning inspirational song but is music really an instrument of change?

A1) I think that yes the music is really an instrument of change because the song song "I was here", the music really goes with the pictures and there are the pictures and the song that mixes and then makes a picture in your mind and I truly like this song and it talks about people helping others so they can live in a good place and have food, and water so they can stay alive.

  22. Q2) Is music an effective way to change the world and make it a better place?

A2) I think yes this song can change the world because when I first heard it I was seeing many people around the world helping the people who need help and the other reason is that when that was song was over it made me realize that I also wanted to help them my giving money to them so they can have same same live as we do.

  23. Music is an instrument of change because it entertains us, and it is a great platform for discussions on social issues. Concerts are effective because artists have the chance to talk to and tell the crowd of social justice issues that are happening around the world and things they can do to help. When music is played over the radio everyone can hear and sing along to the songs. This gives people a chance to understand what messages the music has to say and then to speak to peers about what they can do to help. Music is where people can convey important messages to others in the hope that they will truly listen and, as a result, come together and bring change to social, political and economic change.

Music is an effective way to change the world and make it a better place because if your music has strong emotions and it engages the audiences people will take action because they are touched by the sing they have listened to. For example one artist who is trying to make a difference and trying to make people make a difference to our world is Youssou N’Dour. He is a musical peacemaker in his native Senegal and lends his words and music to critical campaigns, such as malaria prevention programmes. Music is an effective way to make a change in our world because many people like Youssou N’Dour are helping different campaigns to raise awareness.

Music is a good way to get people to change because constantly people are trying to determine what role they want to play in their community, country, and ultimately the world. The trouble is that they don't really know themselves. They don't really know what they are passionate about. For example songs like "I Am Here" by Beyoncé remind people of their desire to initiate change. Inspirational songs encourage them to find what it is that they are passionate about and to commit themselves to the cause.

  25. I don't think that music is really an instrument of change because though music is heard so often, hardly even a quarter of the listeners are hooked up with what the meaning is or what is the message it's trying to convey. If that point is worth making a stand on, then why is it that songs with hardly any purpose are becoming so popular leaving behind the ones that try in succeeding with their effort to change people? As commonly mentioned, the song gangnam style was in Korean and so many of the viewers didn't even understand it's meaning yet it got so famous. That proved that the people weren't interested in knowing what the artist was saying, they just want to entertain themselves with words put into a beat. The purpose of I was here was to encourage, to motivate people to want to make a mark on the world and to make one that told everyone that u were there. When we watched the video, after it was finished, we all probably said that we were inspired and now we want to make a difference in the world. Majority of us would go back and refer to the quote that one million starts with one and that one person can make a huge difference. But does that thought really become actions? Do those actions take place? Not really. When all we use music is for entertainment, how is putting in an extremely important message going to be delivered? How will the message be understood even after being heard? The song I was here does being the reality in front of our eyes but so many of us only think of it for a short period of time and eventually get over it and pass on in life with what they want.

When I stand saying that music can't be an instrument of change, I mean that it's not powerful enough to possibly totally turn over the personality of not just a few, but of almost every individual on the planet. To be able to make this world a better place, we need the majority of all democratic regions to be in our favour. And that hasn't happened. People nowadays don't find it so important and therefore don't find it worthy to recommend to others whereas if the same person has heard some new entertaining song, they would probably immediately want to share it with their friends. Reasonable, but only because that's personality. They want to be someone in a crowd but with pride. They find it that only the entertainment is important and therefore don't even consider looking up to reality. People look for opportunities that lie in their benefit or support their stand so ignoring the option of taking a new approach, they go with what they find supportive. If one doesn't have control on their language, they're probably going to go with that type of music. Being mindful of the language they find it "cool". When that occurs there hardly is a chance for music to affect society and taking it to a positive direction of change.
For example, in recent studies it is shown and said that:

"most people don't 'listen' to the words that pile up into their brains,
because of course, it's hard to dissect that and still listen and 'enjoy' the music..."

  26. Yes, it is very true that music is an instrument of change and that music is changing the world at rapid speeds. In fact music has also brought many innovations to the media and pop culture as well. But on the other hand, I do not think music is an effective way to make the world a better place. I think this because if you want the world to become better you need the people to change for the better and music doesn’t get people to change. I say this from my own experience, just because I listen to a couple of songs that have strong messages doesn’t mean that it will have enough influence on me to make me change my entire life around based on the message the song conveys.

  27. I think music is a good way to change ppl in this world, but the music has to be motivational and inspirational for example I was here its a great song that has a great message to the people who listen to it.But some ppl still don't change they change in their own ways.for example if a song has a strong message it won't actually influence me to change,it will change me if I am motivated towards doing that.so music can change ppl but everybody has their own ways to change.

  28. Q3) Is music a good way to get people to change? Provide a specific example to justify your position?

A3) I think that music is a good way to get people to change good because when I first heard the song "I was here" it made me wanted to help the people out there who do not a have a save place to live, clean drinking water to drink, or any food to eat so it really wanted me to help them out, So it is changing me slowly and when I will have the chance to give food, water or money I will do it so that is how I think that music is the good way to change someone for good.

  29. Q. "I Was Here" was our winning inspirational song, but is music really an instrument of change?

    A. Music has the power and potential to become an instrument of change. I know this, because it has already played it's part in changing some people, pushing them in the opposite direction as opposed to this song's meaning. For example, most rappers (most, NOT ALL) rap with explicit language, and not only rappers, most singers nowadays include cursing or adult themes in their songs. I don't plan on naming names, but I bet at least two names just popped into your head! This has already changed tons of people, again I don't want to mention who, and if it could, why not the other way around? Just because it's easier to be uncaring of your attitude, music can change that, too.

  30. "I Was Here" was our winning inspirational song but is music really an instrument of change?
-In my opinion yes, Music is a very strong way to send a message, or change an opinion. Music can do what words can't, the Music will flow through your mind and adapt there so you can memorize. Then once you start memorizing you realize its true message, what the song means, what the artist is trying to say. So yes in my opinion Music can change people and there opinions.
