Rebound - The End

Rebound - The End

We finished our first novel study.  Let shave our final on line debate and share session.  The book was filled with highs and lows and many exciting and realistic moments.  Most of us anticipated a happy ending for David but as the story progressed it became obvious David was not going to walk again.  This was a great learning moment to see that sheer desire and determination do not always bring you the results you crave but even that should not stop you from dreaming and working to achieve.

Rate the book out of 5 and justify why.  Assume 1 is the lowest possible mark and 5 is the highest possible mark.

Debate and engage with 2 other students specifically those with different ratings then you.

  1. I rate this book a four out of five. This book was really touching, to just imagine what David had to go through. This novel made me realize that any one can be a champion no matter who your are and what your past have been. Mr. Cheney also read this book in a very entertaining way which made me felt like I was there when this story happened!

    1. But you rated this book 4. All the reasons you wrote are telling others the positive points of this book. But your answers don't tell why you rated 4 instead of 5. So exactly why did you rate it only 4?

    2. Because i was hoping David's determination would've made him walk again :(

The book is very intense, you never know what is coming next and very time you stop everyone get amped to hear what comes next.# It was a good book.

    2. so is there nothing that you dislike from the book? anything you would want to change? anything? because you are giving a 5 that means NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING is there that you dislike 5 means that it is the best book ever!!!!!

  3. I'd rate rebound 5 out of 5. In general I just think rebound is a amazing book. It teaches us lessons that would help you in life. For instance, David always has that thought in his head, just because he's in a wheel chair, his whole life is finished, but it's not. He has a true friend, Sean that is, always on his side no matter what. David has finally come to realize that, even though David is in a wheel chair , doesn't mean his life is over. He learns that he might be stuck in the wheel chair for the rest of his life. So he just learns to accept, what has happened. Relating this to a real world situation, I'd be pretty pissed to. I might not even move on, but David has a lot of will in his soul. All I'm trying to say that, the moral of this story, is to let go of all the crap that has happened to you, and move on. Feel free again, have no regrets. Finally the last thing I love about this book, is how must suspense it has. David and Sean go though all sorts of obstacles in life, and learn and to move on. It's a book where, you can actually imagine vividly what's happening

    1. 5 out of five this must be the one of the best books you've read yet. I agree this is a good book. i'm not sure i agree on the fact that you said "David has a lot of will in his soul". before the ending everyone kept saying that David isn't a push over or that he has strong will or he isn't one to give in to such things but from the beginning i knew David really wasn't like that. but its pretty obvious that David doesn't have the strong will we all thought he had. in the back of his head was thinking all those bad thoughts and as you could see he was nearly on the brink he's pretty lucky he had sean.

  4. You see David's story is based on a true story , I would say. People know a days are probably going through the same thing. The end was okay he got to play basketball. Even that he did not get to walk again# I think David will become a great wheelchair basketball player.

  5. I rate it a solid 3.5 I feel like they really should've worked on the ending I feel like the just brushed by a huge chunk if they had took that into account things could've gotten very interesting. I felt like something else had to happen with Scott and Sean they can't end a friendship that easily I feel like a fight fight should've broke out with Scott and the boys.
Or what happened in David's group circle what kind of people did he really meet? I really feel the ending could've made the book better and could've had more suspense that's what really threw me off. But overall I enjoyed the book and all the reading responses OH SO VERY MUCH

    1. You gave it a 3.5 so what do you think they can improve on not just the ending but the entire book

      Delete
    2. what were some main parts in the whole book that you disliked and would want to change? because 3.5 is a low mark you could have given a 4 with all the explaining that you are giving.

all that you didnt like was ending that still doesn't say why you took out 2.5 marks?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

    3. don't get is twisted. 3.5 is a solid number its a good mark im just saying for me the ending of a book is Key that's what threw me off. i feel like to get the extra 0.5 the author needed a better ending. i personally wouldn't give the book a five it wasn't good enough for a 5

  7. I rate this book four out of five I loved this book and it really got me attached also it made me picture every scene like it happened before it was also very realistic in a real life kinda way but I did feel that the end was a little empty a big chunk of story was missing and they just fast forward to the end I would have loved to read what happened but they. Kinda rushed it in a sense that they fast forwarded that's why I didn't give it a five but in general I still loved that book

    4. oh really. in my opinion most of the people are overrating the book a little. so your saying if they completed the ending you would give them a 5? if so this must be one of the best books you read. maybe its because you haven't read a book in a while

    5. Not a full 5 but maybe a point five more because even tho the book is pretty good I still feel there are better books out there but this is not my best but it is a good book

    6. Eric don't you think the author purposely fast forwarded the story to the end and didn't give it in much detail so we can infer and understand why this all happened. If the author would just tell us in detail it would ruin the point of understanding the main idea? What do you think about this Eric?

  8. in my opinion i would rank the book 4 because....

the book did have a twist that david did not get his legs back, that is a very good thing that the author added. this is because every reader would want to know what will happen to david.

something else that i admire about the book is that it has many twists and turns, this makes a reader more engaged and curios.

the book also talks and ties into how handy cap people feel and how their life is. so next time I meet/ see a handy cap I will know how to act and what type of questions to ask them.

the book gives out good skills that can be used in the real world.

some things i disliked were that the ending was mashed up together!! and also that i expected more from sean and scotts "UN friendship" i expected a fight, or maybe with the gang not just with sean and scott and just a small talk.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Are you trying to say that Scott and Sean's "UN friendship" should be given more importance? If yes, why?

      Delete
  9. I would rate the book 5 out of 5 because it is a book about friendship and basketball, Also it also talks about a person in a wheel chair who is sad that now he can't play basketball and who does not want to draw or to play basketball because of his injury. The other reason is that at the end of the book David who is in the wheel chair learns to just move on with his life and he plays basketball with people like him for example being in a wheel chair. The other other reason is that David changes Sean's life by not getting him into trouble, to talk and to hang out with girls but when David was not here Sean would always get into trouble and he would never talk/hang out with girls.

    1. So do you think that Rebound is more about friendship and basketball than it is about a handicapped child (because you mentioned it before the person in a wheelchair)?

      Delete
    2. Well rebound is a book about a handicap person who comes to this new school and he meets Sean and Sean is suppose to show David around school so he does and then David ad Sean becomes friends and one day David came to Sean's house and saw that Sean was playing basketball and David helps him out. Sean try's out for basketball and he makes it, Lose to the ending of the book Sean tells David to just move on with your life and to just enjoy it so this book is about basketball, friendship, and handicap.

  10. Rate the book out of 5 and justify why. Assume 1 is the lowest possible mark and 5 is the highest possible mark.
-In my opinion I believe the book Rebound overall deserves a 4/5. I think this because the book is so realistic and so true and has so many messages inside. The book is really good. As Mr.Cheney said the story isn't about a kid in the wheel chair, the wheel chair is just a symbolization of something greater. This story really makes you think and really realizes how your so quick and wave your moral finger and say how things are wring but how you would do the exact same thing Mr.McCulley did per say, how almost all of us said that he was wrong for choosing David just because he is in a wheel chair but half of us would do the exact thing same thing and make the same decisions Mr.McCulley made. The book is also very realistic and very truthful especially in the ending of the book because most people would believe that it would be "Romanticized" and David would walk but it has that sense of realism and he choses to accept who he is an individual. The story line in my opinion just makes the book and the messages sync very well. The book is very enjoyable and I would encourage anyone I know to read. So my rating would be 4/5. I wouldn't give it a 5 just because it's not my direct taste but I still enjoyed it.

    2. In my opinion Mannat no because if you changed something or added something more I don't think it would be as good. Like if you took out the skating rink part or even a little part like Sean and David being late for class the book wouldn't be as good as it really is. In my Opinion.

  11. I rate Rebound a 4 I think that the beginning was really good and realistic.from all the way from beginning to the middle it had some high and lows and was very interesting, but I feel that the author just grazed through the ending and missed a chunk of the story.
at the beginning everything was being explained fine and it was going interesting but at the end i think they shoud've told how David found his group and how he got over getting of the chair, they shoud've explained how David joined that team with golden jerseys.
That would've made the book alot better and had suspense to keep the audience attention, so I would rate this book a 4.

    1. the thing that they should also fix is Sean and Scott friendship ending, i was hoping for a fight or big argument but he just walked out so i think the author should've put a fight to make the book a little more better but the book was awesome

    2. Explaining everything sometimes isn't the best route, in my opinion. It's only going to drag out the book and distract you from the emotional scene from earlier. Delaying the ending by explaining irrelevant (Not that it is) details is only creating more sheets, with blank papers. In my opinion, I prefer such endings. I find that Sean walking out is powerful in its own way. He doesn't need to waste any more time on Scott, is what it's trying to say, I think.

  12. I would rate this book a four out of five because usually when any reader reads a book, he/she expects to have a happy ending. It may be that those books are for younger kids but in Rebound, I feel like the book was cut off since the book left David off in the same position he started with. When we learned how to write novels, we learned that the main character should develop and reach a new stage by the end of the book, but in Rebound, David was in the wheelchair throughout. The book was great concept-wise, showing what a handicapped person goes through, bringing some reality into writing and doing something new apart from fantasy. What also has a part in not giving a five out of five rating is that some of the things in David's character seems to repeat in the text. David almost always ends up in every event being mad and rageful. So, in conclusion, I liked the book and enjoyed the concept but I'm not sure if the things I think are not great, are really like that, or if it's my misunderstanding of the text.

    1. But this book showed reality that not always there are happy ending. This book has a happy ending but it's not like we expected it which is alright. Like if this was a real story David haven't and wouldn't give up on his dream. It could possibly happen that he will walk. But ending are not always the way expected.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you srushti but the books ending was chopped off and mashed up. it wasn't a proper ending more like the author wanted to end the book quickly.

      Delete
    3. Actually if the author explained all those ending of how he got his team etc. it wouldn't be a surprise for us (readers). Such as we didn't know that David was going to play again and it was really a good shocking thing that David started playing. If we knew about it from before it would be more like a surprise for Sean rather than the readers.

      Delete
    4. Srushti, I agree that we can't always expect a happy ending, but at least we can expect to know how David's life was going to end up. I mean we could've got to know if he gets rid of the wheelchair in the future or not or at least a doctor's opinion. Plus, there is't even a second part to Rebound so it's more of a cliff hanger at the end of the book and that usually doesn't happen in novels.

      Delete
    5. The author left the book at a climax type because maybe he wanted this book to look more realistic.

      Delete
    6. Would you guys say that there was no change in David whatsoever by the end of the book? I think that his character development changed drastically from this random, violent kid on a wheelchair, to a boy who had his hopes and dreams mercilessly torn from his grasp. We found out why he fought, why he exploded, why he hated pity from others. We found out he had much more to deal with than we first thought,

Saying that, was David really on the same stage as he was earlier? Was the ending really butchered and rushed?

      Delete
    7. I agree with khushi because their should have been a epilogue and if it explained tha what happened to David in the future and tell us if Sean kept in touch with David and was always his best friends. I would also like to know what had happen to Caroline. Did Sean and her became couples and get married or had they broken up in highschool it would be very interesting.

  13. I would rate this book a 4 because I thought the story line was great and there was a lot of great vocabulary. THis book sends a powerful message and moral don't judge people by the way they look because everyone thought David was a kind innocent child who has no legs but no there was a huge twist.also I wanted the story to have more fights because every time I thought was going to be a fight it just never happened and to me that would have made the story more interesting.what I learned from this story is that even if you're in a wheel chair or your handicapped it doesn't mean you can't live life to its fullest and it doesn't mean that you are different from everyone else.in general this book is great and you shouldn't judge the book by its cover because there are a lot of twists

  14. I would rate this book 4 out of 5. I really enjoyed the book because it was really emotional and not like all other books, this book showed reality. While this book was being read it felt as if I was happening in real. The way the author was describing this story and the feelings it was pretty good. It almost felt as if it was happening to us. This book had a good beginning and ending, as well didn't go off topic. I just wish there were series of rebound and it was bigger. This book describes how no one is normal and people are not always bored the way they are. Also it describes people are not always like what they look from outside. At first when David came into this book he was shown as a tough, short tempered and reckless person. But as the book kept on going we found out he isn't reckless, he knows what he is doing and why. He is short tempered but the reason he was short tempered was because he wasn't treated normal. He fact that he was tough because people thought he was not strong enough or he was not capable of others things unlike other students. This book shows different perspective and is really a good book. The reason I am not rating it 5 out of 5 is because David won't really agree with Sean that he should start to live his life in a wheel chair. As far as his characteristics he would have got really angry if anyone said to start adapting to the wheel chair. Like his mom has been trying for a really long time, and Sean just said it maybe a few times and at last he agrees. I guess there should have been ways that Sean convinced him. But over all it was a fantastic book.

  15. I rate this book a 2 because it wasn't that good to me. I say this because I couldn't relate to David and Sean's relationship and personally, I thought all of Sean's problems were petty and uninteresting. Also, I felt like the author could've made the ending better because, as a reader, I felt like it was rushed and the author left us hanging

    4. That's the thing, I don't think we should try to relate to David's problems.

    5. Eric: I can't give you a accurate number but I would of probably rated it higher if the author made the ending better.

DeAndre: Partially, yes, however most of the reason I didn't like the ending was because it wasn't as intense or appealing to my senses as a reader as I wanted it to be

    6. The story needed a epilogue if it did have one, it would make a huge difference in your rating right and the ending has to be where David walks again. ❇

  16. I would rate this novel 5 out 5 because I was really interested in the story. It really caught my attention. A good book is when you like to infer what will happen next. And I think that this book is just like that. I loved to infer and talk to others about it. This book was different from all the other books that I read. It tells us that there can also be something like this happening in your life. Whenever I read a book the endings are always happy, but in this book the endings was quiet different. It was not exactly a happy ending, because at last he did not get his legs back, but what he did get was a new hope. A hope that would lead him to reach his dreams, even though he is on a wheelchair. This story has all those things that a really nice story needs to have. A nice beginning, middle, ending, climax, etc. So that is why I think that this book deserves 5 stars.

  18. I would rate this book 4 out of 5. That is because the book was great! I'm pretty sure this book was able to make many people feel compassionate. I'd say the book was very heartwarming! This book really taught us about how we shouldn't " expect the unexpected". I think it also taught us that we shouldn't judge others from how you see them, but how they truly are.
The way Mr. Cheney read the book made us a lot more engaged compared to if we read it ourself. I would've rated it 5 if the ending had a little more detail.

    2. I would rate this book a 5 out of 5 because I really liked the concept of the book which was how a handicapped person goes through their everyday life. All the problems they have to face in a wheelchair and how they get judged by others. Also it is very inspiring for children our age even if we are not in a wheelchair because it shows how every Grade 8 kid has to deal with their life. Even though we can't exactly connect with David and his problems that he goes with in a wheelchair, we could connect with him has a ordinary Grade 8's life has a student. From reading this book I have learned that our society is not very sensitive to those who are different, most treat them as they are not normal by talking slowly, even though on the inside they’re the same as us, or some just don’t give them rights, our society need to be more aware of our behaviour to those who are different. The most important reason why I would give this book a 5 out of 5 is because I liked the way the author wrote it, it’s not over the top, it’s just about basic things that happen in our society that most people overlook, simply because they don’t care, or don’t bother trying to understand.

  20. I rate this book five stars. Even though I thought their might be a an epilogue and he might be able to walk again, but I thought wrong. In fact I didn't expect him to attempt suicide and that life was that hard for him and he would have to give up his basketball dream of playing with Sean. If I were him I wouldn't be happy. I would do the same thing that he does to hide my anger and sadness against the world and become depressed . It would feel like I'm one of the happiest people in the world and I get ripped of the right to be happy and never be happy again and be angry with the world and god for doing it to me. People look at them as Their stupid even though they didn't have from when the were born and have a brain of average or even smarter. How David was cursed and lost a perfect basketball career is unfair but destined to happen and can only wait to be healed but now David moved on and no longer needs any reason to be angry with life, people and his parents. He finally moved on and can start like a new person.

  21. I really rate this book 5/5 because even though it shows a life about a boy in a wheelchair, it showed more than that. It carried out a friendship with a boy and a friend. A friend who might not understand entirely what the boy has gone through or what the boy is still going through. But a friend who can stay by his side with the ups and downs.

Personally the book had enough intensity yet enough excitement as well. The story line was well written as well as it was just a epic story line. It did not receive my 5/5 because at some point I found it quite boring. I had my moments of zoning out, day dreaming. Although that was occasional, it "deducts" my rank for it. But other then that, I absolutely adored Rebound. It felt so realistic but so fake. It has way more positives then negative.

  23. 5/5, DEFINITELY.
I think that Eric Walters is a great author. He took us by surprise from the first chapter. We thought Sean was going to injure himself on the ramp railing as he sat with Scott, but Walters pulled a "NOPE." and we met David, a feisty and vicious kid in a wheelchair. Who would've thought that the wheelchair kid would be itching for a fight? Afterwards, as the story progressed and David's character development grew, we formed a sort of bond which made us feel closer with the non-existent people. There was lots of what I guess you could call funny moments ("I'm saying FEEL my hand, not HOLD it, idiot."), and just overall moments where, even though the story progression was slow, you didn't mind because it was amusing and so smoothly written.

Walters truly knew where to add suspenseful effects around the ending of the book, and he made the scene where Sean had found David beautifully written. No one will really understand, before they experience it first hand. Sean recognizes this and informs David that all he really wants to be, is merely his friend. Finally, the other realizes that he's not alone through this, and that he doesn't have to be alone any longer. David, the strongest person Sean ever known began to break down into sobs.

I found the last chapter fairly gratifying. It had a sudden start, having nothing to do with the previous chapter. Afterwards, Sean is surprised to have found out that David was actually going to participate in wheelchair basketball. David's warm, ear-to-ear smile in the end was a great note to end the great book off.

This book portrays the story of two friends, only one, is simply in a wheelchair.

  24. I would give the novel rebound a 4 . I enjoyed the book rebound it was very different from all the book I had read in the past and it has taught me a lot !
At first I thought i wouldn't have been engaged in the story rebound because I thought it was just a tale about basket ball but as the book went on i engaged in it alot .
The story rebound taught me many lesson , Friendship is important and it is important to have friends that have your back and are always there for you like how Sean was there for David even when David didn't always want Sean , it isn't always about what you want sometimes its about what you need .Rebound had also taught me to stand up for your self and not follow others , sean could have followed Scott and he would most likely have been in detention now for doing something senseless and stupid but sean never followed Scott or his other buddy's he was his own person and stood up for what he wanted instead of following others.
Rebound had also taught me that even when life knocks you down you could still get back up ! When things go bad you shouldn't just pout you should take those problems and fight through them instead of running away , and if things don't go your way you shouldn't give up or stop believing because it isn't about how many baskets go in its about what you do with the rebounds in life .
lastly it taught me they you could learn something for anything because everything has a deeper meaning and everything happens for a reason , It doesn't matter what happened its important that you learned something from it , Not only in books but everyday in reality , learn from everything because everything taught us something .

  25. I rate this book five stars. It was a great book it didn’t end like a holly wood movie Even though I thought there might be an epilogue and he might be able to walk again, but it had a UN expecting start to it. And an early climax, and a lot of ups and downs but really that means it had caused a lot of suspense. In fact I didn't expect him to attempt suicide and that life because these types of stories end “happily ever after” but this book was more real and had a realistic ending. I can bet many of us though that he would walk but not being the ending we were expecting, I am pretty sure we will remember this book.
While at the big events Mr. Cheney stopped reading and that killed us, we really wanted to know what would happen, it was like watching the walking dead the only thing you’re looking forward to is next Sunday Sunday Sunday. This really kept the reader engaged, and dying to continue and not scratching their heads while read aloud.
