David is living his life by believing he will walk soon. He does the research and understands the science. A cure could be discovered at any moment. Sean and most have you also believe he will walk again soon.
David's mother has passionately argued at the dinner table that David can not live his life on a hope and prayer that he will walk again. He must move on and accept who he is now as he may be this way until he dies.
answer the following questions:
1. Is David's mother right to think this way and to want David to think the same way?
2. Should David stop researching and living his life expecting to walk again soon and learn how to live life in a wheelchair - accept who he is?
3. What should Sean do? encourage David and support his belief he will walk soon OR take the same position his mother has taken and help David accept his new reality.
Then respond with 2 other people to spark some dialogue. Find people that have taken opposing views to comment with.
1. David's mother is correct to think this way. You can't sit around waiting for something to happen David has to move on with his life . Yes he might be able to walk again but that is not for sure therefor David shouldn't be waiting . If it happens it happens . In the mean time David should learn how to live his life with a wheel chair Because in the end if he never walks again he would have got his hopes up for nothing and would have been let down . Sooner or later he has to to learn to move on and accept the fact he may never walk again .
ReplyDelete1. i think that David's Mom is right in thinking that way. If David keeps on thinking that way he will live his life to be miserable and never get the cure. If he moves on then he can live his life and when the cure comes out, he'll end up getting it. He can play wheel chair basket ball to cover the feeling of basketball. Also he can live his life joyfully without regrets until( or maybe never) the cure comes.
ReplyDeleteyes Davids Mom does have the right to think that because its her own belief but wanting david to think the same way is not right crushing a boys dreams even tho it might be reality he can still hope that one day he will walk again.
ReplyDeleteI disagree . David's mom should want David to think this way . She doesn't want her son waiting around on something that might not happen , she's not crushing his dreams she's bringing him to reality David shouldn't get his hopes up to be let down , no one said he shouldn't stop dreaming about this but ether way David has to move on .
Deletei agree with rochelle what if he doesn't walk until he is 50
Deletehe needs to make goals and understand his life until that time!!!
The research is being done but not finished and he may have to wait for a long time. if he has hope that will be enough but he can't cling to this idea forever and live his life miserable.
DeleteThanks manat .
Deleteyes maybe but what if davids not ready for that he still belive theres a way let him find out for himself if theres gonna be a cure or not
DeleteIt doesn't matter if your ready to hear it or not . He could find out but he also shouldn't expect anything to happen he should accept who he is . Believe but don't expect .
Deleteeven tho there might not be a cure in a long time with all that work on cell regen he might find a profession out of it so its not all worthless and maybe along the road he might find a cure or die finding one for others
DeleteHe might . But he would have also been excluded from a child hood . The wheel chair shouldn't stop him from having a childhood like any others
DeleteDavid's mother should support him, it's almost like she's telling him to give up. It's fine that she may have mentioned it, but she can't crush the kid's hope. The determination that David has is hard to find, you don't want to just let that go.
DeleteDavid's mom is supporting him . But she wants best for her son , he shouldn't stop researching but he should also learn to accept the fact he's in a wheel chair because there is a chance he will always be in one .
DeleteBut she is trying to convince him that it's over. If she wasn't why would we be answering this question? Portion of the question is "and to want David to think this way" She almost wants to brainwash him.
DeleteWell , there is I chance it is over . Prepare him now so he won't crash later
DeleteEric what if the experiment fails so ge shouldn't keep his hopes up for nothing he should move on.someone might find a cure later but for now he need to move on.
Delete"Expect the unexpected" I agree she should hint it to him, yea sure. But she shouldn't glue it into his mind. He has hope, why shouldn't she?
DeleteI some what switch sides. David should still go for his dreams , David's mother is right he shouldn't get his hopes up but David should go for what he wants . Cell regeneration hasn't been proven yet so David should expect anything but he should still strive for his dream
DeleteIt has not been proven but it's possible (lizards and their tail falling off) and I've been expecting you
Deletei agree with Rochelle. His mom wants him to think the right way, I know my mom wuold of toll me the true for my bileaf.
Deleteeven if thers no cure at the moment david with all his research can contribute to that research and maybe they will be a cure
Deleteso he souldent give up hope yet
DeleteDavid should continue to research and he shouldn't give up , but he also should not expect anything to happen because there no for sure something will
Deleteno guarantee way of knowing but who knows maybe they will find a cure or maybe not but it dosent change the fact that david will always belive he will walk again
DeleteNo one told him not to believe . But he also shouldn't expect he should lean to accept
Delete1 and 2. assume that david's mom is right to think that he should learn how to live in a wheelchair. But i also think that it is not necessary that he does not except to walk again. David should live his life believing he is on a wheelchair but, also with this hope that he will be able to walk again. Like his mom said that it is recommended by the doctor that he should start to adapt the way he is living right now, his mom is right. If David keeps his focus and his aim to research and walk again, and years later if this doesn't happen he will totally break. David and his mom are right and David should follow himself and his mom. David should live the same way he was living before but instead in a wheelchair, with this hope that if it is in destiny he will walk if not than he can just live like he is. I would prefer David to stop his research because the doctors and scientist are there to do this mod, and David should just start accepting that he is in a wheelchair and, there is a 50% chance this will be remaining until the end of his life.
ReplyDeleteI assume* (at the beginning)
DeleteJob*(mod)
Delete1. Yes, David Mom has the right to think this way, and to let David consider that. David only believes that he will walk again because of science improvement. Science doesn't always go as the way it's plan. David can't wait his entire life just sitting there waiting to get of his chair. He needs to move on in life. Yes, he has a disability, doesn't mean he can't do things in life. David needs to do what his mother said, and move on. Science may try to find a solution, but what happens if its to late, or if their research fails. David cant waste his life recalling the incident, he has to move on.

ReplyDelete2.David shouldn't stop researching because there still is a chance he may walk again . He should still continue to find information on how to walk again but David shouldn't get his hopes up yes there is research but the research hast been proven yet . David should continue researching but he shouldn't expect anything to happen or change .
ReplyDelete3. I think Sean should support David's beliefs but also make sure David is witnessing reality . Sean should point out to David that nothing might happen .He should respect David's belief but as I friend I think Sean should help David realize that there's a chance this might not happen and David shouldn't get his hopes up to be let down.
but sean should also use davids mom's beliefs. what if david doesn't walk he need a life plan for that. why doesn't sean then use david's mom's belief and also help david research, but help him make a life until then.
DeleteI agree . But as a friend Sean has to respect David's opinion and beliefs. But as a friend Sean also has to bring David to reality again .
DeleteHe has to point out that it might not happen . He could research and believe but he shouldn't expect
Deletei agree with you ;)
DeleteThank you
DeleteThough I am neutral at the moment, I think that David's mother has a valid reason for thinking what she thinks. I say this because, well, it's true. If it were me who was paralysed from the waist-under, I wouldn't be expecting a happy ending with working legs. It would be very upsetting for his mother if David got too convinced, and never regained his ability to walk again. Surely, she wouldn't want her son to be affected negatively, and wants him to realize that it may be impossible. She knows that if he gets his hopes up, after it doesn't come true, it may crush his spirit!
ReplyDeleteHowever, she doesn't know if maybe it may happen even in a year, or even tomorrow, but she's only assuming that it may not happen for a really long time. No one knows, and maybe, David IS right. Therefore, she has THE RIGHT to think this way and try to convince David to, but isn't necessarily RIGHT, Well, at least that's what I think, so far.
Yes David might walk again . But that's a big maybe ! David's mom is right you can't sit around waiting you have to move on.
Deletehe will walk again but just not yet scince had made and improvment and he will get the cure when it comes out
DeleteHow do you know he will walk again ?
DeleteHe will walk again, maybe soon, maybe a long time from now but it's up to David to believe what he wants to believe in
DeleteYou could believe but you can't expect . You don't know for sure if he will walk again .
DeleteNo one knows if he'll walk again, meaning, David's mother may be wrong as well as David! Many things happen overnight, you'll never know when they release a cure or a way to fix his spine. It may be tomorrow, it may be in a million years, but I think that her forcing the harsh reality in his face will only make David more fierce and will not convince him in the least. Maybe even the opposite!
DeleteThat's true . But in the mean time David should accept who he is . In the end there is a chance it might not work .
DeleteI agree with Linda.
Delete1. Is David's mother right to think this way and to want David to think the same way?
ReplyDelete- I think that David's mother is right in thinking this way but she is wrong in thinking David should too. She can have her opinion and what she believes but she can't force David to think that way because David has his opinion and research to back him up, David really believes he can walk again soon and he is really attached to his opinion, I know he can't be convinced and that nothing will change his mind other than the results it self. So David's mother is correct in thinking this way but wrong for thinking David should.
She is right i agree, but the lest she could do is help him and see if there is a way to make her son drems come true.
Deletei think david should think that way or else he will keep on living his life in regrets and will be stuck in the past like a ghost stuck in this world.
DeleteI agree with you Suhaib.
DeleteIt's not about the dreams, David's mom is tryig to bring him to realty so he doesn't crash later, he can still dream but he has to move on.
Delete1. I think David's mom is right to think this way and to want David to think the same way. I would say she's right because no one knows whether or not there will be a cure soon. It's not wee can predict the future. But if everyone was able to do that, then yeah David would have to be allowed to think like that. David's mom is right to think like that because David shouldn't be thinking about a cure happening when he doesn't even know if it WILL happen! What if there's never going to be a cure for his spine. Apparently there's a spinal cord surgery but it's a big risk. It's like a life and death situation.
ReplyDelete1. Personally I think that David's mom has the right to think this way, but I wouldn't necessarily consider it the "right" way. My parents have always told me to go what I #believe. And it has been made pretty clear that David is determined to find a "cure" to walking. She may not agree with him, but she shouldn't go "against him". It's her son! She could mention what she thinks every now and then but she should support him! "Believe you can and your half way there" Theodore Roosevelt, David does seem fixed on the idea he will walk again, and I think his mother, his very own blood should support him.
ReplyDeleteI don't think David's mother is trying to tell him not to believe I think she's stating to believe but don't expect
DeleteBut she is kind of letting him down. She is indirectly telling him to give up.
DeleteShe's not telling him to give up . She is telling him he has to accept his life , he could believe and try to change things but his mother is right he shouldn't expect
DeleteMaybe not giving up, but she defiantly wants to convince him that it's over. She wants him to stop, and just face the truth. Like I said David's determination is hard to find.
DeleteDavid's mom is right to think that way because she does have a point it might not happen . But David should still strive for his dream
DeleteThat's basically what I have been trying to say ?
DeleteYou said you wouldn't consider it the right way . But it is the right for the mom to think that way
DeleteThe question was "Was David mother right to think this and want David to think the same way". She had a right to disagree but she shouldn't try convincing him it that it's never gonna happen. NEVER SAY NEVER
DeleteShe shouldn't try and convince him but he should still realize there's a chance it won't happen
Delete2. Yes, David should stop the research, and except who he is in life. I understand that science is finding a way to make stem cells to grow new body organ, but it has never been done yet. Its good that David has faith that he can walk again, but he needs to consider that there is a slight chance that all may fail. David should drop the research and move on in life. He needs to except who he is. If David continues to waste time in life believing he will walk again, what happens if his thoughts failed (question mark) Doesnt that mean he would keep on recalling his past incident(question mark) Therefore, David needs to move on in life, and stop living in thee past
ReplyDeleteWell what if David stops to research and starts a new life on that wheelchair. Don't you think that if sooner or later there is a cure for it, and he doesn't know then he might have to stay on that wheelchair for a really long time. There would be an opportunity for him to walk again, and fullfil all his dreams but he has no idea.
Delete1 i think that davids mom is right to think this way because....... she wants david to think beyond the belief of getting better and walking again. she also prays that there maybe a new invention or cure that has come in the world and could cure david but she also wants him to understand that he shouldn't depend on getting better.
ReplyDeletewhat if he doesn't ever walk again then what will happen to him. he will have no life goals etc. all because he spent his life relaying on one thing.
2 i agree once again he needs to move on! yes he could still research and everything but also make and understand his life in a wheel chair. As i said before what if he doesn't walk again he will have nothing because he spent his whole life relaying on walking again.
3 this is a very hard time for sean because he needs to help his friend but not break his heart. if i was in seans shoes i would take davids mother side and help him understand the reality. of course I would also pray and use his belief to walk again.
tell david that "yes u will walk again but what if you don't then what?"
what if you won't be able to walk until you are 50 years old? then what? you need to make a plan until then of your life and understand the reality for NOW!!!!!
But isn't David just going to get really angry if Sean just goes to him and says that he should learn how to live on a wheelchair. You know how David is really short tempered.
DeleteHe will get angry and but Sean is telling the truth and David should understand that he needs to move on but he has to also research about a cure.
DeleteWell what if he spends half of his life in this research which can have a good or a bad outcome, and at last he fails. He will hate it, he will break. So it's better if he stops his research, he isn't a doctor. If there is a cure the doctors are there to tell him.
DeleteI think david should still research his cause because even if he doesn't find a cure with all that knowledge he could become a doctor a scientist or even they founder of a cure so its not a waste of time even tho there might be no cure david can still belive and work as hard as is now and maybe one day there will be a cure and who knows maybe its david who finds the cure possibilities are endless.
ReplyDeleteThat's true, because, why waste all of the knowledge you gained? I agree with you, Eric.
Delete2. Should David stop researching and living his life expecting to walk again soon and learn how to live life in a wheelchair - accept who he is?
ReplyDelete- David shouldn't stop researching but in my opinion he should do it a bit less because all he is doing is getting his hopes up and he is planning out what he is going to do when he is out of the chair but there are chances he will walk and chances he won't. He shouldn't research as much so he doesn't get his hopes up but he should still research a bit so he still has that positive energy and that hope that he will walk again.
does she have the right or rather should she? I say of course she has the right to tell David the truth to what things really are. but should she just crush his hopes and make him move on? Maybe she never had a dream hopelessly out of reach maybe she does not know how he truly feels yet. This whole accident happened recently so I can see why its so hard for David to accept it and move on. Its definitely not the nicest way of putting things. She is right for wanting the best for him so he can be something when he grows up and not cling on to these things. David will have to own up to these things sooner or later. That's just life.
ReplyDeleteYes she is right to thinks this way. David should have some hope that he will walk again, so he won't live his life with misery. But then again, he just need to accept who he is, like his mom said. He needs to go out and be a kid. He can't stay in side, and wait for a scientific breakthrough on spinal regeneration. So I would say she does have the right to think this way, he can't sit down and do nothing for this week, next year, next four years or maybe even the rest of his life.
ReplyDelete1. I believe that David's Mother is Correct for thinking this way.I agree with when her telling David that he will not be able to walk again believing that a cure will approach and he will be free from the chair. As a mother, that's what she should be doing. Encouraging her son to move on and not be so dependent on a cure that is possible to come out and be known and used by humans 30 years from now. Although if you also look at it from David's perspective and point of view, he wants to believe that he will walk again soon because he wants it that badly. David's mother has the right to be concerned about him, she can believe whatever she wants to believe. Though from the looks of it, it doesn't seem that David will agree and take his mother's side so quickly, David's Mother in my opinion is right to think that the best thing her son can do is to move on because I also believe that that's the best way for David to let go and forget his past. However, I don't think that His mother is right to want David to think this way. His mother probably doesn't know how it feels to loose something important, especially legs which is something that is in motion every second. David wants to believe that his legs will heal because he wants them to, he wants to play basketball again and be the boy he was a year ago. Its not right to want David and force him to believe that he has to move on. That would be just wrong,
ReplyDeleteSo you are saying that his mom is correct but at the sometime you are saying that it is wrong to force David to one on?
DeleteSo Subhan that basically means she is on both sides maybe 50/50
Delete3. I dont think that Sean should start putting full confidence on David that he would walk again, even though thats what good friends do. Instead, Sean should mention reality back into him, because not all science experiments go as expected, and not all beliefs happen. I not saying that Sean should discourage David, but what I am saying is that Sean needs to support David mom's idea and to let him move on in life.
ReplyDelete3. I prefer that Sean should make David look at reality instead of encouraging him. Sean thought that David will walk again by looking at David's perspective, as well as me. But after hearing David's mom's perspective i would go with her. It not that Sean should tell David that his research is waste and he's not going to walk again. I mean to say that Sean should make him understand in a way that David won't feel bad, Sean should make David realize that he can still achieve his dreams in a wheelchair. He is still a human doesn't matter if he is in a wheelchair, that's not going to make him abnormal. Sean should help David to get used to the wheelchair.
ReplyDelete1.) I think that David's mother is right to think this way and to want David to think the same way because nobody knows if the cure is going to come any time soon.he should start to learn how to live his life how it is because he shouldn't be sitting there waiting till the cure to come he should move on with his live and live his life how it is till the cure to come.
ReplyDeleteI thing Davids mom is right to thing this way.To make David think the same way he thinks that he might walk one more.at les dont kill his drems.Even if she really think he minet not walk again let him find oujt for himself.
ReplyDeleteNo David should not stop researching. He should keep it up when he researches, it make him learn new words and more atentive. Even if he have to live in a wheel chair for the rest of his life at lest he lear something.
Yes Sean should encourage David to research more and more so if it comes to past David might walk again.Sean should also help David to reseach so him him self can learn something new.and when David says he quites, he find out he can't walk again he just go with the flow.at least they leard something from the research.
1.Yes, I think David's mother is right to think this way and to want David to think the same way. I believe that its much better for him to move on and accept his loss because David might spend his entire life waiting for something to happen that's just not going take place.
ReplyDeleteNo i disagree with you. She is not right to expebict David that bin researching after all this time to give up and take it easy.At lest keep is to yourself. He just wants someone to believe with him and she is his mother so she is wroug .
DeleteIf you were paying attention to the story you would've heard that the doctor told him not to put all his hopes into waiting for a cure cause it might not happen and that's why his parents are being hard on him
Delete2. I think David should still keep doing research even though I think that his mom is correct. That's because he'll keep getting updates on how this process of the upcoming cure. People would say that there is no point of doing research because he won't be walking soon. But I know that's not true! David said that anything can happen anytime. What if he stops doing research and then there is finally a cure? I'm pretty sure he wouldn't find out until he does the research. Without research wouldn't it take longer for him to finis things out? David should keep on doing research about this problem. It's just that just like his mom had said, he should aspect it to happen right away. He can do the research but just don't keep on expecting this cure to come true. No one is sure that it will happen.
ReplyDeleteBut if he stops his research and there is finally a cure. The doctors are there to let him know and it would be on new, that here is finally a cure.
DeleteSo what happens if all fails, wouldnt that research have a bigger effect on his disappointment (question mark) Like David believes all this research because it sounds so valuable and trustworthy. What happens that at the end, producing new cells isnt able to work(question mark) Wouldnt that research make him even more depressed then he would be (question mark)
DeleteI agree with Abby . He would have done all that research for nothing . You may have research but its nothing if it isn't proven
DeleteThat's that's what I am saying David should stop his research, because at the end if his research doesn't work he will fail.
DeleteI meant if his research doesn't work he will break*.
DeleteHe shouldn't stop his research . Why stop believing ? But he shouldn't expect anything out of it . He shouldn't put in so much time he should accept who he is first and realize that there is a chance this cell regeneration won't work.
DeleteSo Pooja You think its okay if David has low self esteem because if his researching fails then he would have less confidence
DeleteWhat Rochelle said is what I meant the whole time
DeleteDavid should keep doing research but at the same time he should understand that this may not happen
DeleteWell if he continues his research and fails, it would feel his all his research was a waste and his hope will break which will definitely break him.
DeleteI think its a bad idea if he continues to research, regardless if it works or not. He is putting his head so much into this research, but surfing the internet is just a way to learn facts, the research never been proven. Research isnt always 100% correct, half of the time it could be fake, irrelevent, or just not proven yet. All of his thoughts and beliefs could be for nothing.
DeleteWell yeah he may fail but he should understand. He can believe in himself and do research. But maybe not so much that he gets overexcited about it
DeleteIt's like you work soo hard to get a award/achievement, you have this hope of getting it and at last you fail. That will hurt a lot, but this is just a award, David is in the situation of succeeding in his life.
DeleteHis research would be a "maybe it will happen", not a "yes for sure this is going to happen" type of thing
DeleteWhats the point of researching if you cant react to it. Whats the point of David researching when its unlikely to happen. When were younger they told us they cant make cells, now they say they can make cells. Like to make a new organ, its not likely, if its true then why dont they start doing it now, and then bring it public to prove to us(question mark) Dqavid is wasting his time researching.
DeleteIt will hurt you A lot but you shouldn't stop striving for your dream you just shouldn't expect so much .
DeleteThat's what I meant to say the whole time
DeleteI agree with Abigail.
DeleteAbigail, it's not a waste of time. People don't do research because they are bored. They so
DeleteUps of or you're have a reason to it.
I Agree with Pooja, he should do the research, it could even help him in the future you never know! However I just don't think David should let it all get to his head. There's nothing wrong with him believing, but he will have to face reality in some point of his life.
DeleteI agree with srusthi 100% I can relate to that incident last year, I wasnt so happy when I didnt get an achievement. Is their a point of trying Rochelle (question mark) I tried, and I failed many times. Relating back to Rebound, David can believe all this researching he is doing, but it can fail. It can bring his self esteem down and his confidence on himself. I get it he wants to walk, but David just has to move on. Researching isnt a method of moving on -_-
DeleteWell first David's dream is to be a basketball player which he can achieve in a wheelchair as well. And as David is putting in all his hard work to finish this research and he is expecting a lot from it.
DeleteI agree with Tamana
DeleteSrushti, Your also right when you say that he can still continue his dream and become a basketball player in a wheelchair.
DeleteDid you know there is something called perseverance. I know you would be like there is "reality" but he can still keep trying. What if he gets to walk again
DeleteWe all fail . That's how we learn but we shouldn't let the thought of we might fail stop us Abby .
DeleteAbigail: if his research fails (doubt it) who said it was a waste? What if he makes that a career option? He can make money, with his research. It's not going to waste! It can be used for other things. There's more to growing cells then we think. And reality check: Mrs.Ang taught us about stem cells, and how they are able to grow new bones/organs.
DeleteThank you Rochelle!!! :)
DeleteVery good point Gitie, I agree
DeleteIt's different when you are trying to persevere for something which is acceptable and others are there to support you. But if you are trying to do something which everyone is against, and almost impossible. And there is over 60% that he will fail, it's not called working to persevere. And in this case the doctors that have done diploma can find a cure than how can David!!!
DeleteIf people think you can't prove them wrong . Use it as negative energy to feed off . When people think it won't happen doesn't it make you work harder just to prove those wrong
DeleteI I think that David's mom is right in thinking this way, David can't just keep his hopes up and rely on science to find a cure they might also fail. So I think that David should get used to his surrounding and move on in life.also if he is so passionate about basketball he can play wheelchair basketball until someone finds a cure (or maybe never) so therefore David should move on and stop waiting for something to happen so can be like everybody else.
ReplyDeleteAnswer #2
DeleteAnswer #1: I think David's mom is right having faith in something you don't even know will happen or not is just more painful. David moving on will help him know his new world. Yes I can't be 100 percent right David won't walk again but You can't also be right of him walking again you will never know things happen and you will have to accept the changes and move on. His researching is a prediction of what will happen it can't always be right it's not like it can tell the future. In this situation you don't know who's right or wrong we can only find out until this situation continues till the end.
ReplyDeleteSo do you mean that David should lose his hope on walking again and get used to the chair?
DeleteNo as I mentioned in my response I can't be 100 percent right and this is a situation in which you don't know if David is right or wrong. It's not easy forgetting harsh times he will look back in life at some point if he does move on and you never know any Miracle could happen some how in life.
Delete1) Davids mother is partially right. I can agree that David obsesses to much about researching and has way to much hope for walking again. What if david does this all the time and ends up finding out,Its not possible. And waste his whole life in hoping? But on the other hand
ReplyDeletedavids mom is not completely right. Just because Davids in a wheelchair doesn't mean that, he has no hope. I think Its unethical to think that way. I mean you cant argue on any other side wrong because you cant prove if It will work or not. You just have to wait to find out. I'm not agreeing to Davids side or Davids mom side. I ll just call my self neutral for now.
2. First if all, I don't think David needs to learn more about being in a wheel chair, he pretty much nailed that part. NO David shouldn't stop his research! He is dedicated! You don't want to loose that trait, because it does seem hard to find. If you read my response for #1 then you will see I used the same quote, "believe you can, and your half way there" Theodore Roosevelt, this quote goes perfectly with this situation. Determination in a grade 8 student isn't easy. He knows what he knows and is adding more knowledge. David seems like the guy where if he wants something he WILL get it.
ReplyDeleteYes he should continue his research but he also can Expect anything to change or happen . Believe but don't except .
DeleteNo, David should continue his research and hoping, but he has to mentally prepare himself for the worst. He has to get used to the way he is now -and maybe even forever-, so that if it doesn't come, he'll be ready for the news. David can hope and hope, but in reality, things like that don't just happen if you want it to. There are some things in life that you have no power or control over; just like gravity. There's nothing you can do but let it push or pull you towards the Earth, and you just have to deal with it. All you can do is weight. *Ba Dum Ching*
ReplyDeleteIf David is always updated on the information and research, he can still be ready if/when he realizes that there won't be a cure any time soon. He can learn to accept who he is, while not completely throwing away the dream to walk or play basketball again. And hey! Wheelchair basketball is still an option.
1. Is David's mother right to think this way and to want David to think the same way?
ReplyDeleteI think yes David's mother is correct because it is not good to keep going with the idea about the research and maybe it might take a long time for that to happen, It is good that David can move on his life and he can just forget about it and when the research is finished then he can do it when he wants.
2. Should David stop researching and living his life expecting to walk again soon and learn how to live life in a wheelchair - accept who he is?
I think yes David should stop thinking about the research so he can expect him to walk again and that he should just accept who he is and move on with his life because if he keeps on thinking about this he will never move on and he will never move on.
3. What should Sean do? encourage David and support his belief he will walk soon OR take the same position his mother has taken and help David accept his new reality.
I think that Sean should Help David by with the position David's mother is doing than he might move on with his life and he is Sean's friend so I think that David might understand what what his mother/ father and Sean are trying to tell him.
2 No i don't think David should give up on his research. Because that can become his profession later on in life why not get a head start. if he still so passionate about walking again why not contribute. if it can't happen for his life time let him help so it can happen for future generations.
ReplyDeletegreat justification
DeleteSo are you trying to say that its okay for David to live in his past, wouldnt researching trigger his memory to his past (question mark)
DeleteIts not living in the past. By becoming a doctor for that kind of field, not only is he moving on he would be helping future generations from being in the same situation. it would be saying this cure wont be in my life time but maybe in the life time of his children
DeleteNot living in the past but for seeing for the future
DeleteHow do we know if there would be a cure in the future (question mark) For all we know, there may never be a cure. If all this researching was for nothing then, David would lose all cconfidence in himself, it would be a while before David can shake the depression off. Therefore, researching does trigger his past.
DeleteI cant really see your point. There could be a cure no one guarantee that there will be a cure that's why i said he can work hard so maybe future generations will have a chance. He won't know if there's a cure or not because the cure might come when hes dead thats why i said seeing for the future NOT for himself
Delete2.) I don't think that David should stop researching because as he researched there can be a cure coming up soon but he doesn't know when.but I do think that he should learn to live in a wheelchair and accept who he is.
ReplyDeletebut if you are saying that he shouldn't stop researching do you mean the david should be as engaged as he is now or become less engaged in the computer and learing for a cure and learn to live in a wheel chair.
Deletebecause i think he should research but also make plans for his life. he should be concerned that what if their isn't a cure until he is 50 until that age he should be ready for his life.
I'm saying that he shouldn't stop researching but at the same time he should accept that he's in a wheel chair and move on with his life. And I also agree with your statement
Deletei agree with Omid, anything is posible. Exept thinking you can fly and jump of a clif and endup killing youself. XD
Deleteokay Omid and Dante i also agree with you both :)
Delete3. What should Sean do? encourage David and support his belief he will walk soon OR take the same position his mother has taken and help David accept his new reality.
ReplyDelete- I think Sean should continue to give David that positive mind set but also take him away from it, like distract him from talking about or thinking about it that way Sean is still a good friend and David is still happy and thinks he will walk again. The distraction is so he gets less attached and less worrisome about him being able to walk again.
2. I don't think researching is a bad thing to continue. David is supposed to have hopes that he will walk again because that's what he believes. I think that he should research but not expect anything to change so suddenly in a short period of time. Accepting who he is is the right thing to do for now, but it's also hard for David to do it because he is very dependent on a cure, and this feeling of being dependent comes from the research he has been doing lately that has given him the hopes that his legs would heal.
ReplyDelete3. I think Sean will tell him to go for it, not only because he's afraid of David and what he is capable of, but he kind of bragged for David about their research assignment. I mean Sean was then one who even brought up the topic of David walking again. Why would he, if he didn't think David was legit serious? Or wanting to succeed his goal?
ReplyDelete1. I think David's mom is right in thinking this way and to want David to think the same way is understandable because David's mom knows there is a cure to this problem, but scientists are still experimenting the cure. So who knows when the cure will be publically exposed for people like David to use. There is also a chance scientist will never be able to make a cure for humans to use. David's mom is right to make David think this way because David's mom has excepted the truth and she wants David to expect it to. David's mom wants David to come back to reality that the chances of David getting better are very few. David is doing the right think of not giving up hope, thinking positive that he will get better soon and not thinking negative that there are no chances. But how long will David rely on the fact that scientist are working on the cure, he will get shattered sooner or later. That's why is mom is doing the right thing to make David realise the truth.
ReplyDelete2. Should David stop researching and living his life expecting to walk again soon and learn how to live life in a wheelchair - accept who he is?
ReplyDelete2. By all means David should accept who he is, rather than wait for something that's most likely a lost cause. I say this because I believe this is what's best for David. If David's able to start appreciating who he is now and move on, rest assured he'll be much happier than he is right now.
I disagree, His research is the thing that is making him believe he will walk again and if he stops and forgets he will be upset and disappointed for the rest of his days because he has no more faith in him walking again. He shouldn't stop researching he just shouldn't research as much as he does now
DeleteWill David truly live happily knowing he gave up on one of his long-term goals? That would probably leave a dent in his GRIT, and maybe even have a domino effect. Can he ever appreciate who he is after having all of his scholarships and dreams ripped from his clutches?
DeleteYes of course it'll take sometime for him to accept his loss but I don't think this will leave a dent in his grit because it's not up to him to fix himself and get out of that chair.
DeleteDavid needs to move on in his life but also he should keep researching for a cure because you never know when someone finds a cure, and if he stops researching he will never find out but his grit shouldn't be about getting of the wheelchair, because if no one finds a cure he will be miserable so he should research but also get used to his surroundings.
ReplyDelete3.) I think that Sean should help David accept his new reality but not to give up on it but he shouldn't encourage him because if he gets too confident that he will walk again then he finds out that theirs no cure to him then he will be crushed by the fact that he can never walk again.so I think that Sean should help him to accept his new reality.
ReplyDeletei fully agree with you thats a nice way to explain what sean should be doing, i never thought about it that way.
DeleteAnswer #2: I assume David should not stop researching yes he won't know if he is right or not but at least he will have some information on the cure what if modern technology finds a cure, the only way he will find out is by researching. Yes there are some chances of him not walking but who knows, what if his research does come in handy I also agree that he should accept the change and move on but moving on isn't easy sometimes in some situation you have face the times that were harsh it's not easy forgetting and letting down your faith.
ReplyDeleteNearly everybody has sided with David's mom! a dramatic shift. Would you be so willing to hear straight forward bad news about your big hopes and dreams? If someone felt they were unobtainable.
ReplyDeleteSuch as:
"give up on basketball you will never be a star"
"why waste your time singing, you will never get a record deal"
"stop drawing and painting you aren't that good"
David's mother's intentions are right, but maybe her way of relaying the message will only keep a fire burning and a determination stronger than ever in David. If people said things like that:
Delete(Give up, you suck, etc)
That only motivates the person further, we all know that.
Well if we take David in this situation, he wants to be a famous basketball player. If he stops his research and adapts to the wheelchair he can still be a famous wheelchair* basketball player.
DeleteWell I am not apart if that everybody David's mom should motivate him. She could hint it that it possibly could never happen, but she can't just tell him " face it it's never going to happen" I personally find David's determination to be incredible, why waste it? #BELIEVE
Deleteno offence but these examples have nothing relating to david's problem. he is sitting down wondering what to do and when he will get cured instead he could make life goals and decide what he wants from life.
Deletesaying that you won't be a star or making a record deal is nothing. david's mother did NOT say to stop believing all she said was to also make goals and stuff ,encase he is NOT CURED!!!!!!!
if someone told me that i will never be a vet i know i will because i believe. but i will also make other goals for what if that dream doesn't come true. maybe becoming a teacher if i dont become a vet.
secondary goals!!!!!!
i would take the news straight on but doesn't mean i have to give up hope on my dreams or anything. david can still have hope and believe and live his life normally
DeleteWoah that is a great point but isn't a little different, I mean the possibilities, between us and David
DeleteThat is true. I think no one would be able to accept there dreams being crushed so early. But in David's case i think that's a little bit different. all the the dreams you posted are possible if you just stop and work hard at what you want it all depends if you want it that bad. That's what David's thinking right now if he works hard enough it'll work out. but this time its different Its not a thing he can work on himself individual or practice over and over again, its a matter of time and patience if it works out it does if it doesn't it doesn't the matter is not in his hands. that's the difference
DeleteI think the way davids mom approached it was kinda harsh its like telling a kid you suck at soccer or at game etc so maybe she she hint it little by little instead of strait to your face
Deletethey are indeed smaller goals but ones you can relate with and thus appreciate the real risk in simply telling David to move on in his life. This is the textbook at your computer screen answer and reflects a moral finger waving but in reality I don't think you would appreciate such comments. My examples are purposefully simplistic so that you can relate and connect and have a more realistic response.
DeleteWell if it comes to his personal goals and dreams probably it wouldn't be so easy to move on but it's not like he should stop living life like what Srushti has said he can be a famous wheelchair basketball player. Maybe there are many other things or activities that are waiting for David you may never know.
DeleteMannat: Your vet goals is like David's cure goals. He BELIEVES!!! And btw the basket ball thing relates to David.
DeleteBut then again if there is a will there's a way
DeleteDavids mom still is right to think this way . But you can't expect David to think this way . We all have goals in life and we will try hard to achieve them , if you try hard you could succeed . David's mom is right it's not really realistic for him to walk again but it is possible
DeleteIs it possible? anybody do any research about people who lose the feeling in their legs and then get it back years later?
DeleteLast year I read a book . There are these feeling patches we have .even though we're paralyzed we could still feel in some places and it is possible These feelings could spread
Delete1. I think that David should start to agree with his mom. Maybe his mom might be wrong. Maybe he might be cured. But what if he doesn't? Don't you also think that David should atleast try to imagine his future in that chair. What if all his dreams that he had of walking again, getting of that wheelchair etc would not be true in his life? What if he always stays on that wheelchair until he dies? That would break him more. But what he was already prepared for his future on that chair and off that chair. He would be very happy if he walks again, and if he doesn't, that won't break him so much, because he was already prepared for his future in the wheelchair. That is why I think that David should listen and agree with his mom.
ReplyDelete2. I don't think that David should stop researching. As I said in number 1 that he might walk or might not. So he should research maybe he might find a way, maybe he will not.
3. I think that Sean should try to convince David to think of his future from both sides. He should also think of what his future might be on that chair. He should try to make him realise that his future can still be nice, even when he is on that chair. And there are so many things that he likes and can still do, even if he is on that wheelchair. Like the biggest thing he wants is to play basketball again. He can still play if he is on his wheelchair. He can still achieve his dreams and become a famous wheelchair basketball player.
Sean shouldn't really be choosing sides. Its not going to end up well. Now that he has heard the bitter truth to this cell regeneration, i think there something in the back of his head telling him that what he thought before wont come true same goes for David. They are both going to have to realize this sooner or later.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that like shutting down someone else's hopes and dreams? What if you were endlessly told things like
Delete"Oh, bro, you suck. Give up, you'll never make it." And stuff like that? And how about you having that one [group of] friend[s] who told you they believed in you, just to have them say the same as everyone else after that?
? which question are you referring to?
DeleteThat "they are both going to have to realize this sooner or later." I think that that's what all haters think, when they tell someone that they can't follow their dreams, I was just inquiring: What would you do if you were like David, with a dream and talent, but it's taken away from you and suddenly, the whole world is against your beliefs?
Delete3.I think sean should go with david on this one because if david finds a cure then great but if he dosent with what he learned he could do many things help find a cure become a nerve docter or many other science related work so what david is doing is not worthless its progress for the future.
ReplyDeleteso sean should encourage him to find a cure or to contribute to it
Delete3. I think Sean should tell David that he should be getting all excited about walking again. Who knows, what if he doesn't get to walk again. He can still believe that he will walk again, but just don't get too happy about it and then find out that it won't happen. Well maybe Sean should support him at times, but It's more important for David to understand that sometimes things may not happen the way he expected it to be.
ReplyDelete2) I think David should just move on. Even tho that his legs aren't working . He can still be able to do a lot of things. I mean your not dead, are you? don't Just throw your life away. You still have your whole future in front of you! because your in a wheel chair don't take it in negatively and think your life is over. Live has Its ups and downs, But it will heal over time. and you'll just have to learn to accept it. Let the wheelchair embrace you, have some adventures with it, don't let it drag you down. Its just your mine and fear that might be stopping david, but as soon as thats all gone. He can accept who he is.
ReplyDelete2. i think david shouldn't stop researching. he should at least keep a little hope for walking again. but prepare for the worst if his dream doesn't come true and then he will be okay and able to live on and if it does come out then that will be really good and he doesn't have to die in a wheel chair
ReplyDelete3.I think Sean shouldn't do either because if he encourages David he might be feeling up he's head with falsehood and error nonetheless if he takes the same position as David's mother they might not be friends no more.
ReplyDeleteSo I think he should avoid the topic and if the topic does come up he should just be of no avail for the either side
DeleteAnswer #3: I think Sean should take David's mother's side and help David understand and move on in life. We are all not sure if he will walk or wouldn't so it's better off if he accepts the changes he has been through and if he is able to walk again he would get to start his life the way he wants it to be. It would be though for David to accept these changes but it's only for his own good and he has support from his family and friend so moving on is the only best option for David in this type of situation.
ReplyDeleteBut if Sean takes David's mother's side then David will feel there is no hope and have no more faith in what he believes in which will impact the way he speaks, acts and his attitude overall. Sean should take David's side but also try and avoid the topic.
Deletewhy doesn't sean just take both sides but more of david's mother's side. he can help david research and all but also help him make goals for his life and what he might do until if a cure comes out when he is going to be 50 years old
DeleteBut don't you think this will affect David and Sean's relationship negatively if Sean takes David's mother's side? Do you think they'll still be friends?
DeleteI can agree with both sides but I think more David's side because David's research is what is keeping him going, I agree with planning for the future but he shouldn't let go in what he believes in and I think he should continue the research but not as much as before.
Deleteabdi if that question is for me i dont think so. sean doesn't need to make a big deal of it, he can just ask david what will he be doing in the mean time the cure comes out.
Deleteif the cure comes out when david is 50 of course he will need a goal, plan or something mean while the cure has come out.
Abdi your correct, I doubt David would treat Sean with the same respect because Sean already looked David in the eyes and said I Believe you, David will accuse him of many things such as lying and never actually being his friend. It will spark a huge confrontation between both sides.
Delete3. If Sean really wants to help, I think that he should start encouraging David to face reality. Stating his opinion to him is the wrong thing to do. Sean doesn't want to hurt his friend and make him feel discomfort at once. It's best if Sean takes small steps in trying to assist him away from the topic and his belief. Small steps such as changing the topic when he starts talking about his legs, getting excited and engaged in any topic other than his legs to show curiosity and enthusiasm so he can furthermore explain and stop talking so much about his wheelchair, and start playing more basketball to help David get a feel that if he wants to play that badly, he doesn't need his legs to be a good player. Simple things to get him away from thinking so much about his accident. It will slowly allow him to face reality and soon accept who he is by just moving on.
ReplyDeletei agree with you but that will be hard for sean to do as well as david
DeleteYes I agree moving on in this type if situation wouldn't be that easy it will take time.
Delete3. Sean should support him by helping him slowly acknowledge that there is a great possibility that the cure or treatment won't come out. Yet, despite helping him recognize this, he could also support his friend's dream, believing with him. Like I saw Rochelle say earlier; "You could believe but you can't expect."
ReplyDeleteI think he just need to accept who is! This links back to my first answer, "He can't stay in side, and wait for a scientific breakthrough on spinal regeneration." He wants to live a normal life like anybody else, he can't just wait to get rid of his problems, he need to face them, but in this situation he just need to accept that he is stuck in this wheel chair. And when the time comes, he will be able to walk, maybe next week, next year, when he graduates from high school, it shouldn't matter he needs to live his life to the fullest, and nothing should stop him from doing so.
ReplyDeletei agree with you and i forgot that he had said that he wanted to be treated like a normal person and all. that is a very bid part of this topic now.
Delete(inside is one word)
Yeah he wants to be treated like a normal person, act like one then.
DeleteBut how is he going to be treated like a normal person if he's in a wheelchair?
DeleteHe need to act like he not in a wheel chair
DeleteFirst of all what is normal
Deletehow can he do that if he cant walk hello
Deleteaverage
DeleteActually he wants to be treated the same as others, not normal wrong wording
Delete3) If this was me, Id be neutral be in seans case, yes i would agree with davids mom. He just needs to move on, cause if he doesn't what happens? he will just end up throwing his life away in the thrash if the cell regeneration project work.
ReplyDelete#3
ReplyDeleteSean is David's friend, and every good friends need to tell the best for them. To tell David that he should accept himself, and move on is huge on David, take away the one thing your good at, and your gonna forget about yeah it gonna be tough for him. I think Sean should wait for the right time, and tell him the thing.
2. I think David shouldn't stop researching, but he should learn how to live life in a wheelchair because it is important that David keeps up to date with how the research of cell regeneration is going and if there has been any progress with the research. But David should also learn to live life in a wheelchair for the time until a cure arrives because David isn't taking the chances in life that he should because he thinks that when he will do it once he is able to walk again, but he doesn't realise there isn't always a next time. Just like in his school there were school basketball tryouts and David is a great basketball player, but he didn't tryout because he was in a wheelchair so he decided just to watch the other players play and to teach Sean moves and skills. David just missed such a big opportunity to play something he loves just because of the wheelchair. That's why David needs to learn that from now on he has to do everything in a wheelchair and not wait until he is able to stand again. By doing this David is not accepting loss and David is not accepting that he is going to be going everyone on that wheelchair forever, but to accept who he is going to be for the time until he is able to stand on his own his feet.
ReplyDelete#3 I think Sean should tell David that he should be soo happy about finding a cure and he should move on, I know he is scared of David but he should bring David to reality and explain everything to him but also give him suggestion I know David won't believe Sean because he has his own grit but all I can say is Sean should try to stop his friend from crashing later on and make him move on.
ReplyDelete
