Technology
Are netbooks, Ipads & Ipods, and the focus on technologies good for the classroom?
We have used technology to enhance Art, Math and language through blogs, photography and video production. Many truly enjoy this use but many others appreciate traditional learning tasks and environments. Do the pros outweigh the cons of using technology in the classroom.
Read the below blog discussing the overuse of technologies and then answer the question and discuss:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/erin-whitten/technology-there-is-no-av_b_5113400.html?&ir=Education&ncid=tweetlnkushpmg00000023
Using Technology is actually a great way to teach in classrooms. This is the first time I've been in a class using technology to help us in our learning. I feel that having technology in our school gets students more engaged in school, and makes them want to learn more. According an internet article, about 65% of students are visual learners. I think that Technology is great especially for visual learners, auditory learners, and other various types of learners to really make a difference in their education. We live in a generation were Technology is expanding everyday, and for a school enviroment, i think techonology is a ghreat way to enchance our learning.
ReplyDeleteTechnology can enhance our learning, but according to the article Technology is dangerous. Do you think that the technology that can help us, can also be trouble for us and other students?
DeleteI don't see how technology can be dangerous as long as we have internet etiquette when using teachnology. The article mentions on how teachnology causes problems with communication and interactions, but I disagree. Instead Technology helps expand more on our communication and especially helps those who are shy to talk in person. So to answer your question, No, i dont think students can be troubled by technology.
DeleteBut if kids get to dependent on it like almost all day, that can be dangerous because than where does a normal life go, like if this happens tech would be the only thing in life!
DeleteOur generation is using it too much, they depend on technology for everything, don't you think its risky?
DeleteBasically Technology is our life. Its a part our generation now, and it will expand each and every day. Sooner or later, we have to be dependent on our technoology because thats just our generation. I still dont see how technology can be dangerous.
DeleteYes technology grows every day, but as well brings new problems with it, such as hacking, information leaking and etc. For people technology can be as addicting as nothing else.
DeleteIt is dangerous, what our using our own minds and brain? As soon as we need an solution to a problem we go on the internet! What about our own thinking?
DeleteI agree with ronella, we use too much of tech!!
DeleteSrushti: I agree, hacking, information leaking and stuff like that happen, but its so rare. IT happens, but it rarely happens. Technology can be addicting, but its not a drug, it's not harmful. If technology is addicting, its a good thing because, half the facts and research you know comes from technology. If it wasnt for technology, you wouldn't of had that advantage.
DeleteRonnella: Ronnella our mind, and thinking comes back to internet. You wouldn't of had half the things you know already without the technology and educaation provided to you. You think you learn from textbooks and worksheets (Which you do, dont get me wrong) But when you think, especially your backround knowledge, half the things you thinlk with your own creative mind, comes back to help of technology.
Actually hacking is not a rare thing, and neither is information leaking, But if you still think it is, well once your information is leaked you can never get it back, once your account is hacked, you can't get the messages back that the hacker sent. Agreed that we get facts from the internet, but you never know about them being hacked. And hacking is quite common that's why a "GOVERNMENTAL SITE WAS HACKED OF CANADA". If people can hack a governmental site, imagine what else!!!
DeleteSrushti: Has technology effected you before?
DeleteSrushti, that only happens when people don't use technology properly
DeleteSrusthi thats why I say we have to have internet etiquette
DeleteWell yes my emails have been hacked, and not only that but the Canada revenue agency being hacked also had a lot of impact on my family and others.
Delete@ pooja yes this only happens when people misuse tech, But isn't that too common now, technology has benefits, but can also lead to problems once it's misused.
Delete@Abigail You said " we have to have internet etiquette", but you also said " I still dont see how technology can be dangerous".
Abby so you don't think technology in a class room distractions from the students full understandings ? why or why not ?
Delete@abby: so what do yo think about the way communicating theses days?

ReplyDeletePROS:
ReplyDelete-easier to write and jot down ideas (typing is faster)
-teaching videos might be easier to understand
-special apps can be interactive for special need students they can be funnier for them to learn with
-it can keep students focused for long periods
-it makes it exciting for them to learn (engaging activities)
-using technology will help students in the future
CONS:
-inappropriate material is BIG CON for little kids and students
-cyber bulling may occur
-too much digital time can be harm full for students this can provide a disconnect to face to face communication.
-projects or assignments can be deleted by mistakes
I have a hypothesis. my hypothesis is that using technology in classrooms is a great way to learn but can also be pretty dangerous. if teachers can install programs or something that can prevent these cons i think that the use of technology will be amazing!
~blocking inappropriate pictures and websites, or the use of harmful language.
thank you :)
If the cons keep on having and increase, what do you think the future generation would end up like?
DeleteHow does technology cause problems for face to face communication? Technology encourages people to have more communication for a thought. How do you think that technology cuts of face to face communication? If thats so then we wouldn't be blogging at the moment. Our class has more disscussion on the blog then if it were to be in person. Are you trying to say that having a class blog isnt a good idea?
Deletei agree with you abby perhaps i was wrong, but that is the opinion of the blog i got the information for. maybe the blogger meant the to much technology can have an impact to going outside and playing or going out to the mall with friends can be decreased.
Deletebut remember this is the bloggers opinion everyone has different ones.
In my opinion I believe that technology is good for our classroom as long, as we keep control of why we are using it and how. Doing class work on Ipads, and other devices is way different from, working with devices for a certain amount of time. The student who has written this article is absolutely correct in his/her perspective. She has written what's going on around her, such as every work on devices, no face-to-face communication and etc. I would have said the same if I was on her place, this is because I would not like it if I don't bring a device to school, and no work gets completed, I wouldn't like it if all I used to do is be on devices, while I was small. In their school she/he mentioned they don't have any conversations face-to-face. Now that seems a little too much of tech. Just like our school, they should have a few class with tech and the others without tech. Net-books, Ipad's and Ipod's, and focus on technology is good for the classroom. It helps us create new ideas, work in different way using the Ipad, more creative projects and research for assignments. But then working on devices 24/7 is not right, as well it's not too good getting dependent on tech. Getting dependent on technology is danger, which basically means that net-books all day, going home watching TV, doing you home work on a device and etc. If we are dependent on technology, and we are all of a sudden asked to hand in hand written, we would definitely have a lot of trouble. So I would say that focus on technology is good in classroom, but as long as we have focus on other things as well.
ReplyDelete"Just like our school, they should have a few class with tech and the others without tech. "
DeleteYou said this in your response.
Wouldn't this be unfair to the classrooms that have no time to learn efficiently with technology, and the classrooms with the technology all the time would experience this problem of lack of face-to-face communication?
So Srusthi, you rather stick to a tradtional learning then having technology?
Delete@Linda yes I agree, that's why I said schools should have equal learning of tech and traditional.
Delete@Abigail I would stick with equal amount of tech and traditional, keeping in mind, not to get dependent on either!
Is that even possible to have a bit of both? Wouldnt that cause confusion for future generations? We live in a generation were all we have is basically technology, wouldn't this cause confusion? If we can't be dependent on neither learning methods then how do we expect to learn, and enchance our learning because without education, you wouldn't learn anything.
DeleteActually no this wouldn't cause confusion on future life, instead it will help them to have the ability of both traditional and tech. Tech is good for research and new ideas. Its true we live in a generation with tech, but this doesn't mean all we have is tech.
DeleteFuture generation can have tech as a benefit, but isn't it true that before people with tech still had the ability to learn?
I think having technology is great for a class room but only till a certain amount . Technology could be used for many things in a class room like making educational films or finding new ways to present our projects . allowing the students to have iPads, computers , i pods etc. with in the class room is giving the students another way of learn . This is such a great way too learn with techonlolgy but at the same time technology could be blessing and a curse . Most of the students now grow up on technology , my little cousin knew how to work a ipad at the age of 5 , when i was 5 i use to play with my batz dolls . It feels that every were you look now technology is taking over . In school it does have a great impact on the students the focus shouldn't be on technology and if your lucky enough to have it with in your school use it for learning you should take advantage of such the great use of it . But although we have the technology to use in such great ways students instead are on the device for other things not for learning , they watch irrelevant videos that have no connection to do with the work were doing in class , they rush work to play silly games like flappy bird and everyone huddles around to watch . What im trying to say is the focus on technology is great ! but only if its used for the right things and does not become a distraction towards your learning and others around you .
ReplyDeleteWhat type of advice would you give to the student's (who wrote the article) school,so they can have better learning?
ReplyDeletegreat question Srushti
DeleteOnly being allowed to only do certain things with the device , Only things school related unlike huge distractions such as games, and videos.
DeleteI would say yes because instead of photocopying many sheets of paper and wasting/cutting down trees you can just use the ipads, ipods, or netbooks to use in the classroom and when you are doing your work by typing it will also increase the speed of your typing. the other reason is that when you are doing a project you can get extra information by using the internet, If you never had this opportunity you would never know how a computer, netbook, ipods, and ipads work. I think that the pros overuse of technology in the classroom because when we are doing a blog or making a production we enhance our skills in doing these and when we grow up we will be able to this so on in our future.. Plus by using technology we will be able to not cut down the trees and wasting so much paper, Like for example when you are finished a grade you take all the work that you done and you just throw it away. By also using technology it is fun to learn math, art, language, and other subjects. For example for language when you are writing and writing your hand will be tired out and for typing you wont, you will be able to type as long as you want. The blog is talking about that technology is not fair for other people like now kids are playing with there ipads or ipods and they are not going for walks and having some family time i would agree but there is a way so that they can do so they can spend family time with there family and going for walks. You can play games or be on your devices or computers on the weekends and you can use them for doing homework, then you will have time spending with your family having walks, and going to the parks.and on the weekends you can spend time on our device.
ReplyDeleteThe purpose of using technology is for convenience. This is the reason why most people get hooked on it and become dependent on the devices- because we don't have to check through the gigantic encyclopedia.
ReplyDeleteIPads aren't necessarily bad for the classroom, because it holds tons of information you can use and learn from, enabling you to improve your work. We can now search up anything we need in our time, and there are lots of advantages in comparison to the disadvantages. Kids prefer learning this way, because with the internet, you can do unique projects and find easy references, like tutorials in KhanAcademy, and other.
When the article tells me that Kids shouldn't be able to use such technologies at this age, it makes me wonder.
If one child has parents who barely allow them to use devices, they won't be able to cope with the quickly growing generation of technology that surrounds them daily. As the use of technology grows, you can try to teach your children that it is not okay to use the internet, but... chances are, the world is going to continue no matter what you say, and because of you, your child will be having a very hard time in the future.
For example- If they choose to go to a post-secondary school, it will be hard to succeed, with such pressure on them and no advantages of technology. The world becomes much more competitive once you step out of middle school. Students who have the use of technology have stress enough, but when you don't know how to use anything- its gonna be 5x more harder. Education nowadays is different than back then, and the use of technology is not crucial, but is definitely needed.
This is basically what I think.
Technology is just a modern way of getting to solve problems, to communicate etc. I think that technology help us go through our life, daily. Not everyone in the world has access to technology, but for most persons who have it, just over uses it! Yes, I get that technology is very beneficial to us. But its getting to the point where we let it rule our lives. I totally agree with the article. Our generation barely communicate face-to-face. Is all about texting and chating online. That's just a bad practice for our communication skills.Technology is very useful and valuable to us,but we should be also able to think on our own. We shouldn't be depending on technology all the time, we need to do some of our thinking . I don't dislike technology, in fact i'm one of those persons who feel like they cant survive without it. But when I think about it, its actually not sometime to be happy about, its just a bad habit that can just be broken down just a little bit. Technology is good but not when its overused!
ReplyDeleteI agree with and do you think there is a way make people get rid of technology once they are dependent on it?
DeleteAs you said "Our generation barely communicate face-to-face. Is all about texting and chating online."
DeleteIf thats what your saying then why would you be on a class blog? Don't you think technology is useful for in our case? So you think debtating in person is better than doing a class blog?
Debating in person, in the class can be a challenge. People would speak out of turn and it could turn chaotic. We could take turns stating our opinions but we may not have enough time. In addition, not everyone will have a chance to say what they believe. Class blog, like this, is an excellent way of communicating ideas.
Deleteyou say that its being overused. But we use technology for every class! If technology was avoided in our school (which is very difficult to accomplish) we wouldn't be debating like this or be able to share our ideas as much as we would like to.
DeleteThank You Tamana :D
Delete@Srushit,I don't think that everyone will change their habits of over using technology, but we can make a change for our selves if we really want to.
Delete@Abby, umm....I said that technology is good but not when its over used! I don't think we over use the blog!
What can happen to those who don't get rid of using the tech a lot (overusing it)?
DeleteBut you said that we barley have communication, its all about chating nd texting online which is what we are doing now. You say that we are over using technology nd that we have less communication. So what are you trying to say? I dont see how technology being overused is a problem.
Delete@Tamana, your opinion is that we use technology for everything in our class? I think we use alot of technology in class but its not overused!
DeleteCan you go a day without devices and such Ronnella?
DeleteRonny i see many students in our class become distracted by the device , and rush there work to play ! It might not be over used but it isn't always used in the correct manner
Delete@Surshti: I think that they'll be about to used more of their own thinking and also communicate with people better! :)
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletewell sometime technology is good in class but at times students take it for advantage and use is for other stuff. what must of the students don't understand is that the iPad and net-books are there so we have the easy way to research, for things that you mostly will have to go home and do. So having technology in class.
ReplyDeleteDo your think that technology is dangerous?
DeleteI think the technology we use in the class room are great tools that help our learning experiences, By using the internet we find other opinions and apposing sides. I feel like the pros out weigh the cons. the only really problem is distractions. you can easily get swept away in the vast knowledge that the internet has to offer, that's why sometimes its hard to stay on task. In terms of communication its not like kids are flat out not speaking to each other i think its an exaggeration when the article said "No more communication between people". seriously people only use things like i message when they can't talk or there to far away from each other. I feel like the article is a little in accurate but overall technology is a great thing to have but you shouldn't rely on it.
ReplyDeleteYou have a great point ! But people do become accustomed to saying so much online they forget how to say certain things in person ! This ties into cyber bullying . The pros do not out weigh the cons! Because technology has such a great way to make us all learn but instead distract ! So its only useful when used in correct ways which it is not always .
DeletePros:
ReplyDelete-Keeps kids more entertained
-Personally consider it more modern
-Generally more enjoyable (video productions, podcast, etc)
-Wide range of of uses and forms has the potential to reach students of all learning styles, as well as be more efficient
-More interactive
-Class room tech is more memorable
-Helps people "break" out of their shell
-Tech can offers for defining unique educations
Cons:
-Not 100% "eco-friendly"
-Work has a chance of getting deleted (unlikely)
What article mentions:
-No face to face communication
-If you forget your device, your practically "doomed"
-Toddlers using devices "better then teens"
-Become " dependent " on devices
In my Pros and Cons list, the Pros well over come the cons. So yes, tech is a good focus in a class room. I mean, none of the arguing facts are relate able. Yes when you forget your device, it does suck. But he/she makes it over dramatic. No face to face communication? I would consider us a pretty talkative class. The whole IMessage thing comes to play after school. But it is not like IMessage is the only way of communication we use. The whole toddler issue, it could be a little offending. But we are the generation of technology, plus all those kiddy apps don't exist just to be watched. All apps want to be used. And becoming dependent on devices, that's your call. Although tech wouldn't be the most Eco efficient idea, our science and tech is advancing. And you know it. A chance of being deleted... That would technically go under the "colom" of relying on your device. but this is why you do paper drafts, I mean, it is the more reliable option. And the reasons to the positive is practically a given. Therefore, yes Tech is a great focus in the class room.
PS: There is a reason why Mr.Cheney always says his phone is the smartest "thing" in the room
In your response you said that tech wouldn't be the most Eco efficient idea, but isn't it better than the millions of trees we waste for paper every year?
DeleteTrue true but, paper is recyclable although I cannot say we 100% use that to advantage. But when comparing resources, recyclable paper to a "never ending supply" of energy. Which would you consider more Eco friendly?
DeleteTechnology could be very distracting not only to you but to others around you if you don't have that great responsibility to use the devices appropriately . Don;t you think it distracts students ? Not only with learning but from being active , and extra activities
DeleteWe live in a generation where people can't stay without technology. They need it in their daily lives! It's like the new way of learning. I wouldn't say it's a bad thing, nor would I say it's good. There are many pros of having technology. While others think it's a waste of time. Using technology in the classroom can be a good idea. I don't think teachers would let students use technology just to play on them. Its school!! Of course it's going to be for work! Many kids don't like coming to school. To get students to start liking school, teachers aren't going to want to give them boring things to do. Like I said before, we live in a generation where people can't stay without technology. Everyone loves technology. Students can work with it as well. Look at how we use technology. We use all this for photography, video production, etc. Technology CAN be a good thing. We just have to make sure we use it for a good reason, and not playing or socializing all the time.
ReplyDeleteAgreed! So, would you think it is wise enough to let 5 year old kids learn how to use technology, and how can it effect their future life?
DeleteWould the kids of our generation (who have already experienced the use of technology) be capable of going back to how education once was taught back before the internet was created? Or would we be unable to do so?
DeleteSrushti: 5 year old kids shouldn't be learning how to use technology. If they do, they'll just become dependent on it once they get older. When they are little, they don't understand as well until they get older. Once they're older, they'll understand everything else about it, and will become dependent.
DeleteLinda: Yeah. But it would be kind of hard, because we've grown up with it. We wouldn't be able to handle it at first, but then I'm pretty sure we can.
Can being dependent on tech ruin those children's live? how?
DeleteI agree some what , but don't you think technology has such great ways of thinking for the class room its just used in ways that don't help us advance our learning . Do you think if the children find the right way to use it now they could create new and extraordinary things later ?
DeleteI think That Technologies are great for the class room and it provides us with that extra support, some of us need. It is also a great way to do work. Here, let me give you an example, Microsoft word allot of us use it for writing up essays, speeches, research and lots more, allot of us depend on to get work done same goes for typing you stuff on you iPod now that we have this new found technology we have changed from using the old pen and pencil to using touch pads and stylists that's not necessarily a bad thing but it can cause you to face some distractions like messages, games or you tube but their are still people who like using a pencil or pen so i thing as long as we give students an option to use whatever resource to do the work it would be good and i believe the pros do overwhelm the cons of technology.
ReplyDeletePros:
-Finding resources are much easier
-Making dramatic changes to work is easier than erasing it
-More learning opportunity online eg:Youtube,Math Sites,Homwork help
-Saving paper
Cons:
-Distractions like Youtube and Games
-Costly iPad and computers
-Possible software/hardware issues
With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility
DeleteHave there been any affects on you using tech in you classroom environment? If so, how?
DeleteYes i have learned many ways to utilize the i pads using various apps and i have also sharpened up on my computer skills so yea i have been affected but in a positive way.
DeleteTechnology can be used in as many useful ways as it can be misused and it certainly influences people in different ways. Deciding whether or not technology is a good way to enhance education is dependant on the way that it's being used. It's not going to be the best when instead of focusing on the given task, the student is found on youtube or playing around on another app but if the student is given a choice of working on an ipad rather than a piece of paper, it will be obvious they'd choose the ipad and do the given task. Many parents find the old school way a more efficient strategy to teach the kids of our generation more so becuase that was the way the generations efore them were taught. One thing that many people against the use of technology for education don't seem to get is the fact that we have much more things to get distracted by. When our parents were in school, they certainly didn't have the devices to find better than the books they were busy memorizing and they could easily focus whereas, when we are given books, we want the devices in front of us. Having a device to work on doesn't make us want any other tool to learn. Also, working with technology can make you a much more responsible person than you could become by using several notebooks. On paper, all we have to make sure is that the right sheet is handed in at the right time, but with technological devices, we need to be aware that our work can be deleted, published to the public, misused, taken or atleast, you have to make sure it's safe. Along with responsible, working on devices make you curious, they make you want to discover new things, how things work and overall a more organized student.
ReplyDeleteif you it is a distraction how can it be prevented
Deleteif you it is a distraction how can it be prevented
DeleteI personally believe that yes, the focus on technologies are good for the classroom. I mean think about it.. Mr. Cheney says that he isn't able to teach without his computer! Technology has advamced too far to back down and avoid it now. Our school contains and holds plenty of ipads and it is for the entire school to use. Even the younger junior students use these ipads for learning purposes. I even bet that before they started school, most of the students didn't even know what an ipad was. We aren't able to stop it anymore because technology is everywhere. We even use computers and ipads during an assembly to help us make it a great sucsess. Think about jobs now a days! For most jobs, you must be familiar with computers and technology to get accepted. This could be why children are taught how to efficientlty use ipads, ipods, netbooks and ect. in classes and in school. We use technology and have enwraped it with all of our subjects. Technology is great for class use, if used appropriately. Technology in classes bring and give us different opinions of different people across the globe. In math, we watch videos to show us differernt stratagies of solving equations and problems. Everyone learns differently and have their own opinions. And not all 30 students learn and interperate things the way their teacher does. Technology enables students to seek these new opinions and give in their own opinions for everything. It gives us new ideas and perspectives. And I believe that we need this, because this is what the world has become in need and dependant on. Therefore yes, the focus on technologies are good for the classroom for all the reasons I have mentioned.
ReplyDeleteif we have become so reliable if I took away your ipod could you still have functioned efficiently or could you have done it in less time
DeleteAgreed but what about the reasons why technology shouldnt be such big of a focous ? we could easily say why it is but with great power comes great responsibility do you think every student could hold such great responsibility and use it in appropriate ways ?
DeleteIn my opinion technology is excellent in the class room because its much easier to do school work on an iPad, because you have the school WiFi to use the internet for information and download apps from the app store. I say that its much better then using rusty old text books, students can communicate online through the blog, and their are allot of math games and apps on the iPad.I guess you could say that the iPad 's make learning fun. Also another main reason reason why i think the net books and iPads are great for educational purposes is because when i was in grade 1 we had no iPads or net-books ,we had a computer lab and i remember that we didn't get to go the computer lab often,so to me the ipads are portable computers because they can do most things a normal computer can do.Now i agree with the article most people depend on technology for either information or their homework ,also the article describes how younger kids are learning their communication skills with ipads and they need thinking skills ,you cant expect a toddler to depend on an ipad for everything .when i was a small kid i played a simple card game called Yu-Gi-Oh ,i dont think anyone knows what it is.Now here are some of the cons of having iPads in school is if you haven't noticed some iPads dont have cases and iPads are very fragile and delicate so there is a possibility if you drop it might crack. Also iPads aren't easy to replace they cost allot of money. So you could say technology is great for educational purposes until it gets in too the wrong hands of the students that dont pay attention and take advantage of the ipads and netbooks.
ReplyDeleteTechnology has become one of the most useful resourses to access through information. Its what our modern generation relies up to whether its typing your assingment, communication, accessing information, and all sorts of things that give you a head start. In my opinion I believe that technology is good and a great way to learn in our classroom. Its something that motivates and engages you to learn in a different way and in a certain amount of time. Technology is only positive when you use it wisely or positively, it shouldnt become a distraction to anything for any sort of reason. Technology can be useful in a classroom for class projects such as, presenting your assignment or project online, making educational videos, making announcements, and even blogging so you get to know what other people have to say about in their opinion. The things we should specifically be aware are things like your work being deleted, plagiarized, posted to puplic or any other things that can go wrong. Overall my general assumption towards technology is that when its kept in control its a more efficent way of teaching then pencil and paper.
ReplyDeleteAre netbooks, Ipads & Ipods, and the focus on technologies good for the classroom? We have used technology to enhance Art, Math and language through blogs, photography and video production. Many truly enjoy this use but many others appreciate traditional learning tasks and environments. Do the pros outweigh the cons of using technology in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteRead the below blog discussing the overuse of technologies and then answer the question and discuss:
-The use of technologies in our classroom is beneficial. I think teens are becoming obsessed with technology, but there are definitely benefits and cons to this obsession. Technology greatly helps people. For school work, communication, sharing pictures and for entertainment purposes. However, even with theses advantages, I think there is more of a disadvantage then advantages. With the technology there is freewill. And with freewill it doesn’t have many restrictions . A teacher could tell us to do work, but in the back, we could be playing games and socializing with other people when we are not suppose to. Im almost positive if any child had to chance to play games in the room, he would. The fact is everyone including myself is so dependent on technology is crazy. The generation of this world, kids would know more about technology then the elders would ever wish to know.
Netbooks, Ipads and Ipods, and the focus on technologies is good and bad for you. I would say that all this actually depend on how someone is using the technology around them. Some think that it is fun and good for us because it is helping their education. They are learning to use different kinds of apps, which eventually helps them learn about the world around them, history of a famous person etc. But their are also some that use technology all the time, and then they say that it is not good for them. It is just a bad influence. But the truth is that, they are the ones using it in a bad way. I mean like they don't need to listen to music while doing homework. But if they do it once, and they enjoy it, then they will end up listening to music while doing homework anyways. In my opinion I think that technology is a use to my life and education. I do understand that sometimes technology can be hard to deal with, because things can get deleted. But I think that people have common sense to know that if it got deleted once, then it could deleted again and again. So if I were in that kind of situation, I would use technology in a good and helpful way. I would keep backups in my USB drive, e-mail, note-book, drop box etc. And for the next generation, we should be helping them use technology wisely. Instead of more games, use more apps for reading, counting, etc. They should be aloud to play games, but not for a long time, because then they would be addicted to it.
ReplyDeleteYes, I believe technology is good for the classroom and I say that because of the experience I've had and what I've noticed being in Mr. Cheney's class. Technology offers a variety of new and exciting ways for students to increase their knowledge and personally I think students are more intrigued and involved with their work when it comes to using technology in school. Using technology in school has also showed educational benefits in students and I can say that because of what I've noticed with my classmates: For example students who have use net-books in class seem to have (over time) improve their computer skills. This, along with many other examples, is proof why I think using technology in a classroom environment is educationally beneficial to students. Of course there are some cons too, such as students taking advantage of free wifi, but don't get me wrong the pros do outweigh the cons
ReplyDeleteCan you list 3 Other pros
ReplyDeleteStudents are brains are being challenged more frequently(1) which makes them more engaged(2) and students want to be able to answer the questions themselves which makes them more independent(3)
DeleteIf a student is distracted by the technology for all the wrong reasons the cons will over weigh the pros ! With great power comes great responsibility do you think all students have such a responsibility to use the technology for all the right reasons with our distracting others ?

ReplyDeleteYes I believe technology is very good for the classroom, it was created for our convenience. so that everything is easily at our finger tips. Yeah it has some down sides to it but they are outweighed by the positives. Yes people do misuse technology for various reason, getting bored or not knowing how to use. But the way to fix it is find a way to not get those reasons. Making fun and enjoyable but also completes its task of teaching the lesson. Teachers need to choose the appropriate types of apps.
ReplyDeleteIt can have an amazing effect by improving your learning skill but only if you use properly however if you misuse it, it can have a negative effect on your life. It could help in English by teaching you new words to use, which improves your vocabulary, and overall English. This is one of them, but there many ways of technology helping in schools. We all learn in different ways, hand on, visual, or logical the ipad could be very helpful or a waste of time. Another example is summarizing, people often over summarize giving every detail, but making trailers gives them an idea of how to summarize.
It has been misused, if your using diactionary.com for vocab help and get distracted and off task searching up unnecessary words, get off task and you won’t be able to finish the desired task. Another example is when I was writing this it took me a while because there were distractions on the webpage. They drove me away from the article, and this post. It could also be very bad in the future, how you may ask, if I become so deepened on my device if it is taken away I wont be able to function without it, that is huge problem.
There are positives and there are negatives I think it is about how the student uses technology in the class room for good or bad, for help or obstruction. The only thing is don’t completely rely on technology if it taken away you will be stuck.
Pros:
Can be very helpful in improving skills
Is able to teach in various types of learning skills
Cons:
It can make you so deepened on itself that is takes away you own capabilities to function without it.
It can be a distraction from whatever task you are doing.
I think that technology in school and classes is a great way of learning and some students should be grateful for having technology to learn, some students take the use of technology for granted, fool around while the teacher isn't watching, some don't focus nor stay on task, I believe that students should have to earn it.it's a privilege that others might not have or be able to afford, Nowadays people over use technology for e.g Teens would look themselves in their room using their devices , wouldn't spend as much times with their parents, when asked to join family gatherings most of us would refuse because we rather stay on our gadgets or devices. I've very grateful for having technology in our class but we shouldn't over use it for everything .

ReplyDeleteI have been concerned, though, by some of the ways that I see technology being used. Technology should not just allow us to do things in a more engaging way; it should allow us to do new things that we thought were not possible. It is those new things that are the real value technology provides. It is not enough to USE technology. You must use it well.Having access to books does not mean that the students in classrooms will learn to read. you need to make careful choices and use those books in a way that will gently and purposefully help those children to become independent readers. Very few children can make this leap themselves. Most need a thoughtful teacher to guide them.In the same way, having technology in a classroom does not mean that the students will discover how to use it as a learning tool. You have to carefully select and structure what it is used for so that it becomes truly educational. As with reading books, should not our goal be to develop independent learners? Technology should not be used as simply a digital worksheet. There are many apps and Internet sites available that are simply a technological version of a paper task, forcing students to practice over and over a skill that they may already have mastered. Don’t get me wrong. Skills do need to be practiced. I just happen to think that students should spend most of their time using technology for more creative purposes. Technology should not be used as a way to keep students occupied. A small number of computers or devices in a classroom can be an inviting center, whether it is an assigned or a self-chosen one. If you use technology in this way, choose wisely when you decide what the students will do with the technology. There are many, many creative options available. It should not be just to keep students busy.Technology should not be used to do what can be done without it. Drawing a picture on an app or a computer program and labeling it is a worthwhile activity, but why bother if that activity is an end in itself? It may as well have been done on paper. Technology should allow you to do something new with that picture, such as sharing/publishing it in some way.The good news is that there are other, better options for using technology.Technology should be for doing good things in better ways. For example, hearing books being read aloud is an important part of primary literacy. Long ago, listening to books on a cassette tape became listening to books on a CD. Now, there are online books and apps that do a much better job of this, highlighting the words as they are read aloud.Technology should be for sharing with the world. The environment that our students are growing up in is wired for sharing. The hardware and the software that is available make it easier every day for children to share what they are learning with the world. By sharing their artifacts digitally, students invite the involvement and support of their parents, grandparents and anyone who sees their work.Technology should be for connecting. Before the advent of the Internet, classrooms were forced to be isolated learning hives. Now, those hives can all be interconnected as classrooms can easily link with other classrooms and experts to ask questions, compare experiences and learn together. Tools such as Skype, Twitter and blogs make connecting and collaborating with classrooms from anywhere a possibility.Technology should give choices. We are blessed to have a lot of technology in classrooms and my favourite part of that is the choice it gives my students in both their learning style and in sharing what they have learned. When allowed to choose, some students prefer to read on iPads or computers. Others choose paper books. I think choice is important as we accommodate the variety of needs our learners have.Technology should not just allow us to do traditional in a different way; it should allow us to do things that we thought were not possible. That's why there are many pros and cons to having technology by I personally believe the pros overcome the cons
ReplyDeleteI think technology in school and class is a great way to learn and its more faster and efficient, its also enjoyable and that makes it easier to complete tasks, its also very helpful like educational videos, and getting help with work,or finding and exploring different ways to do work or present it.It's its also helpful in teaching like Mr.Cheney uses it to get videos so its more easier and not boring. Its one of the first class i have been in that uses technology,i know that there are some negatives to this but its over weighted by the pros because sometimes people get distracted and misuse it but to make it more safer i think teachers should choose the appropriate apps we should use it but for a specific time limit.
ReplyDeletesometimes it can be hard to deal with beacuse like sometimes when you go on the web all the adds and advertisements take you away from what you were doing.you can improve your learning skills we also do trailers and different presentations and its fun and you dont get distracted beacause its interesting and there are alot more different ways of using it, i honestly disagree with the article because it says there is no communication but compared to us we communicate alot, but some cons can be like some of the ipads have no case on them and it can drop and crack and its costly to replace.
i think technology is great and a amazing way to learn new skills and improve and have fun while doing tasks.like yo can also come so dependent on it and cant wok without it.but i think its taken over by pros and i am grateful of having it.
To be honest, *claps, clap clap clap clap clap* .After reading the article I just said "YES, SPEAK ON." If you could see, especially in places like my church you would understand how technology is killing us mentally. And I even admit for myself too. I'm addicting to technology! I cant even go 5 min. without checking my iPod, and that's just for the time. When I was young I always use to walk around older people that I knew and I have witness in real, 3 people all facing each other but not saying a word but just 'texting' each other! And I'm just there standing like "?". And even with that I always use to want to use technology to make video production just like Mr.Cheney class when I was younger. And now that I am (this is where the first part of the question answer comes in) I can really say: "I want to able to see and understand the words that I write on paper." Don't get me wrong, I love Blue Jeans and Black Marilyn (my iPod and laptop names) ,I do. But the amount of time I spend on it, and amount of times that my mother has came into my room and yelled at me to get off these things I'm saying now, IT'S TAKING OVER OUR LIVES. And I'm not talking about with the learning. The learning it's okay, actually with the learning it's great, but people please. Have you ever looked outside on a bright sunny knowing, lets say 3 p.m. in the afternoon? Then being on your laptop for about 3 hours, sun sets, just done whatever your doing (in my case a movie) look outside again and in shock finding out it's like a quarter to 7? And what were you doing in those 3 hours? Exactly. Technology is excellent for the learning uses and the amount of different options it provides for us to learn is awesome. But when it really comes to like spare time, you want to play Fifa? Go outside and have a soccer tournament with yourself. 2k? I'm pretty sure around each block there is a basketball net. You want to read the new latest book? They don't have librarys for no reason. You want T.V.? THE SKY IS OUR MOVIE THERTER! In our class room as 8B we are known for using Apple, we use it to help us in all sorts of subjects so I really don't understand why people would like to return to old ways. These are better and new ways. I know we are called the technology generation and may sound a little sour, like we are a generation who don't know what real life is, but as somebody from the generation, it's really useful, plus with more people adapting to these things the better that we get and more useful they are to us. Like before we started off with only joke of the day and gold book. Now we have fact of the day, and word of day. What I'm really trying to say with my thoughts is, all these apple, and adroid, and nokia devices are great for us when it comes to learning new things. But when it comes to lets say socially and mentally like playing outside in the parks, it wouldn't kill at all to do that.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
agreed ! Technology becomes a distraction if not used in appropriate ways to help our education
Deletedoes technology distract or do people get distracted?
