ReplyDeleteMrs. Burke was speaking loudly and slowly to David because people have the misunderstanding that physical disabled people also have mental disabilities, so they try to be very clear and precise to them. Also people feel morally obligated to be extra kind to people who are handicapped. So in this case, Mrs. Burke considered David a mental disabled person so treated him exactly how we would treat someone if we saw them in his similar condition.
ReplyDeleteDavid was all smiles when Mrs. Burke touched his wheelchair after erupting at Sean for doing the same thing because he considered Sean as his rival whereas Mrs. Burke was in the position of authority. People like it when a person in authority treats you with care and understanding. Also Sean and David had started on the the wrong foot and maybe David did not know how to react or respond to Sean's kind gesture of helping him steer the wheelchair in the right direction.
morally obligated ... what a powerful insight
DeleteIt can be that since David already beat up Sean once, Sean is really afraid of David. David can use this as his advantage, and bully Sean. If Sean thought David is getting soft, Sean won't feel that afraid and repel. To stop that from happening, David has to keep Sean under-contol by acting tuff
DeleteYes I would say that that makes sense. Do you think that David will pick on other kids as well?
DeleteMrs.Burke was treating David like a small child due to his condition. Similar to how Mr. Mcculey felt pity for David and started being sweet and kind to him.Mrs.Burke's method of showing pity could have been speaking loudly and softly to David, as she tried to express that she felt sorry for him and that he deserves better. This is just how society and people act, caring extra for those who are below "normal". You can see it all the time, people doing whatever they can to provide extra help for these people, they try being emotionally attached to these individuals . Wether it's by talking all sweet or talking slowly and loudly.
ReplyDeleteDavid was smiling when Mrs.Burke touched his chair as David previously mentioned the perks of being in a wheelchair. So one of these perks would be being treated more kindly by others ( especially adults ) so this is what David goes through constantly and is now used to it whereas he gets provoked of older kids as he thinks they might pose a threat ( probably why David is so aggressive ) . Another reason why David did not flip out, its because of the fear of authority knowing that if David were to be mean there would be consequences..
i agree with what you are saying but don't you think there are a lot more reasons david would be so aggressive. for example he is sick and tired of being looked down at. he wants to be treated normally...
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI wouldn't say that he is sick and tired of being looked down at, because if that was the real story behind it, he would be aggressive with teachers too. Don't you think if that was the case, then David would have gotten as aggressive when Mrs. Burke touched his wheelchair just like he was at Sean? And judging from the way David is described and the difference between his actions with teachers and Sean, i think he actually likes the idea of himself in a wheelchair.
DeleteI feel that it is mixed, he loves some perks of being in the wheel chair but then again also despises it. For example David describes that there are special perks of being in a wheel chair, perks that drastically change how people treat him and his interaction with people. He obviously loves these perks as he is able to get away with trouble and treated so special. But being bullied, put down constantly and being left out of the crowd isn't something David could just dust off, is it? These miserable experiences are what probably in the first place built his aggressive side. Now not many students have the guts to talk back to authority ( adults ), David may seem the type of kid. But if you think about it these very people treat David so special, something David seems to enjoy and sometimes take advantage of. So it would be smart not to destroy this gift . David knows these guys will be there for him where as students will come and go, and go against him or create problems which is why he got so aggressive at Sean and not at Mrs.Burke
DeleteDavid was all smiles when Mrs.
DeleteTrue, I get what you are saying, yes he is taking advantages of all the perks of being in the wheelchair, but when you have been through a lot (been bullied etc) it's hard to control yourself, you just say what's comes to your mind. So isn't it confusing how he erupted at Sean once he had touched his wheelchair without thought and then again he didn't say anything to Mrs. Burke? I mean if he was really a mad kid and seriously didn't like anyone touching his chair, he would have done the same thing to Mrs. Burke. Like you said, the teachers will always be with him unlike students, but when u don't like something, it doesn't depend on who does it, it just irks you.
Self -control is the key here, it is probably what keeps David from flipping out when an authorial figure does something David doesn't like.If you relate this to real life many teachers give assignments/projects students hate, but we still do it. Why? Self-control, that's why. We know that the work must be completed and that there will be consequences if we don't do it. Now David understands that he has to go with the flow in order to get what he wants and he is largely depended on his self control. He knows if he lets the things that make him angry slide authority will still be nice to him. Where as students don't heavily determine David's fate which is probably how he gets his anger out and probably why Sean was a victim in the fight
Delete@reshmiverma it is not just about the person who touches you. one of the main reasons David would not utter a word when ms Burke touches him is so he can enjoy the perks of being in the wheelchair. if he were to yell at ms Burke for touching his wheelchair it would ruin his FAKE reputation of being weak, innocent and honest. then he wouldn't be able to enjoy the perks such as getting spared in fights like when Mr mculley spared David when David was the main fighter
Deleteit cant necessarily always be about david wanting to take advantage of the teachers or "enjoy the perks" of being in a wheelchair, maybe he just didnt want to be rude to the teacher. firstly she helped him, she was kind, and shes and adult which should be respected no matter what. but for sean they just had a fight, he is not going to be nice too easily. david may seem all mean and tough but only to the students so no one messes with him. but to the teachers, maybe he just doesnt want to get on the bad side of teachers especially because hes a new school.
Deleteenjoying the perks! great line...Is David taking advantage? Is that why he attacked Sean...just more of taking advantage of people
DeleteAlright, I think im coming to say that its mixed just like Rayan mentioned. Beacuse to some people he is showing that he is aggressive on, and to elders like the teachers, he is showing that he is so innocent. Why? Because like i said earlier, he enjoys being in a wheelchair, and takes advantages such as getting away with things. In my original post, all im saying is that David smiled at Mrs Burke was because he probably didnt know how to react to SEAN. And because Mrs. Bukre had power over David, he liked it that she understood his condition. So in the end Im saying that being tired of being looked down at is probably not the reason David was so truculent. I can use an example from the book. In the beginning when David threatened Sean to fight, Sean didnt want to get into any fights but clunched his fists, but because of self control, he unclucned them. If you have self control, you still havethat quick reaction that you wanna go.
Delete@mrcheney what if he was testing out how well the teachers would treat him because he is in a wheelchair, maybe to see if they would be on his side no matter what. or maybe it was just that sean got him mad for being in his way.
DeleteWell first of all david is disabled everyone (teachers) treats him like he is kid. No teacher wants to act all mean and rough to the new kid especially to a kid in a wheelchair. Honestly when the vice principle acts like that you know the teachers are going to follow along and talk to him in such a sweet voice. Not only that this is why david said “the perks of being in a wheelchair ‘‘and if david acts along who knows how long this sweet talking will end. And not only that but sean also got away with being late because he was with david. But this might also be the reason why david hates people touching his wheelchair. he is treated as if he is not capable of doing anything by himself. He is underestimated in most cases and most likely he has been treated like this all his life. This might also explain davids aggression towards such people. Going back to the teachers david might also have special circumstances. One can be what if david gets hurt while under their (the teachers) supervision, I’m sure they would be in a hell loud of trouble. And im sure no teacher wants to be transferred or suspended (whatever they do to teachers)...

Deletebut if she was just trying to be sweet and kind to david why would she talk loudly and slowly to him instead of just normal?
Deleteshe was talking loudly and slowly because she probably thought that because David is in this handicapped position, he might have some mental disability as well, and just to be a kind teacher, she wanted to make sure that David understood everything she was saying.
DeleteWell if you think about it, there are separate schools in which people with mental disabilities go to, so Mrs. Burke probably did not talk loudly and slowly because she thought David had a mental disability. In fact she probably talked loudly and slowly to David as it is her way of showing pity. She tried conveying a message, she felt sorry for him and tried expressing her kindness by talking slowly and loudly to David.
DeleteRayan true but judging from what we have read so far i dont think he had any mental disibilities, so why would they put him in a special school. It can be that David's parenst knew he did have any mental illness but the teachers didnt. Mrs Burke isnt the one who can decide which school Dvid should go to, so maybe he is trying to show Mrs Burke that he is a bit slow in the head but in reality he isnt.

DeleteYes i agree with jamin here because even though David is in a wheel chair now, he was probably not always in a wheelchair his entire life so he could just have been the most athletic kid in his school (before the accident) and he just wanted to go to HomeLands to start fresh
Delete^_^
Ah yes he is constructing a reputation ... a desire to be seen as weak in the eyes of the adults BUT as what by his peers?
DeleteWhy would David want to keep a reputation of being known as a weak and venerable kid? If students realize he is weak the bullying, looked downed and the feeling of being left out will only increase. Sure David may utilize his reputation to surprise his victims, but after all the fights David might cause teachers to be suspicious. Think about it, different people in each fight but David is in each of them.... I think David might want to keep the weak and venerable reputation so that teachers would treat him all special and let him get spared. But also have a tough reputation so that students don't go against him nor mess with him.
Deleteas the text says, the main character has stated that "the whole school will know what happened by second period" so the school probably knows that this kid, though in a wheel char, is one tough kid to deal with.
DeleteMr. Cheney, to the teachers he was weak, but in the eyes of his peers he was trying to show he was the man, that he was the one that everybody had to listen to because nobody would pick on him. David was trying ot show his peers that he had full power over them and they had to do what he would say or else they would be the ones getting into trouble because nobdy would even believe that "this innocent kid in the wheelchair in such a poor condition" would have done anything to cause a fight.
Delete@Rayan you are completely mistaken didnt you just see Davids reputaion in front of students. David does many actions to prove he is a tough and scary person for example when he didnt chicken out in the fight and attacked sean. Also remember that Sean touched David's wheelchair, David attacked him to keep up his reputation of being tough but in front of his teachers he was acting very nice so that he could enjoy the perks.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteThat is what I meant David wants to appear weak and soft in front of teachers so that he could benefit from their kindness and extra care. Whereas he acts all tough so that students don't go against him . He doesn't act all soft in front of his peers AND teachers.

ReplyDeleteI think that the teacher thinks since David is in a wheelchair, she thinks that he is also mentally disabled as well, so the teacher wants David to understand every thing she says loudly and clearly
ReplyDeleteDavid smiled when mrs Burke pushed his wheelchair because he knew that Mrs Bruke was being nice to him, so he knew that she is going to be soft on him in year. If David got mad at her she will think David is rude boy. David didn't want to give a bad impression on his teachers
ReplyDeleteDavid and Sean met because of a FIGHT so that wasn't a good start for 2 people that have to stay together all day. David seems like a confident fighter and he also seems very stuborn. So even if Sean and David have to stay together, I don't think David would forget everything and be a good and kind friend. Also, since David already beat up Sean, Sean is really scared of David. David can use this as his advantage, as Sean grows more scared and weaker, David can grow more powerful.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteSorry for being so late mr. Cheney. I got really busy today so to answer your question:
I think mrs. Burke spoke loudly and slowly to david because she saw that David is handicapped so she automatically just spoke like that. It's like a first instinct. As soon as u see a person with a disability, even though the person isn't deaf, you just speak like that. Maybe she showed pity for David. I think david was all smiles when mrs. Burke touched his chair because he wants to show the teacher that he's a good innocent kid so he can get away with more things, so the teacher feels bad for him more, also to get a good impression of himself to her. Another thing is after Sean got David all mad of course he's not going to be friendly to Sean especially seeing his intention of pushing his chair which isn't bad but I think david wants to do things him self and he just doesn't like it when people show pity for him. So back to Sean. Since he got him mad but mrs. Burke was being nice and welcoming david knew the smartest thing to do was be kind back. Because Why be mean to someone that is being nice to u.
no sorry required the blog is available all the time
DeleteWas she being nice to him? what other words could you use?
Deletekind, helpful, polite,
Deletepatronizing
DeleteI dont think those words will apply because she was just pretending to be nice because she saw that David was a new student and that he was in a wheelchair.
DeleteAs mentioned in book she wasnt very polite to other students but to david she was very "nice". In reality she was just pretending
DeleteI believe that the reason the the math teacher mrs. Burke was talking so loudly and slowly to David was because since he is physically impaired (he is in a wheel chair), she naturally assumed that he was mentally impaired too (as in stupid, demented or retarded). I mean, the only reason you would talk to someone like that is that if you think there are stupid or if you try to use sarcasm. Also on top of that, even when Sean came in and told him he was late, the text states that her expression had soften after she saw that he was in a wheelchair. Meaning she had the same reaction and emotion as Mr. McCulley (pity for David) so she was being kind to David ( if thinking he was dumb is kind) David probably did not go all ballistic on Mrs. Burke when she had touch his chair because she was a teacher and did not want to go to the principal's, or the vice principal's office on his first day, even though he might of not been sent down anyways, or possibility number two is that he wanted to create an image for himself in front of the teachers as the goody-two-shoes or as the class favorite.
ReplyDeleteNote: since he is the new kid at school, the teachers do not know if he is a "special kid" of not so they probably have to check or whatever. TEAM SEAN FTW ^_^
agree with with you when you say ms. Burk is acting like that because david is in a wheel chair but don't you think that she wouldn't go as far as to think david is mentally impaired. honestly i think she is just trying to be sweet to david. unless you have any more evidence to go against me
DeleteMs Burke did not just talk to David Slowly and Loudly because he was stupid or dumb. The reason I think this is because i don't think she will think that David is not smart just because he is in a wheelchair, I mean its commen sense, why would a teacher think that a student is stupid because they are in a wheechair because its the body that is paralyzed not the brain. Ms burke would not be dumb enough to think that David is dumb because he is in a wheelchair.
DeleteIn fact i think that Ms Burke talked to David nicely and slowly to him because she might have thought that he was getting bullied often already and she might have realized that he may already be going through alot of pain and she might have tried to be polite so that she dosnt cause any more pain for him
well, Devesh, there is clear evidence of this in the text, such as her talking pity for david, (not only about his physical state but also his mental state, in a wheel chair, it's like a moving prison that you cant leave, and now that place is you're way of life) in her tone of voice you can here it, she souded like she was talking to a stupid person
Delete>:) >:) >:)
ivan just because a kid is in a wheelchair, a teacher will not think they are dumb, retarted or stupid. how does that even make sense? she did not think he was dumb, she just felt bad which is why she spoke to him in such a way.
Deletewell, Jamin, i sort of agree with you there, just because you are in a wheel chair does not mean that this should stop your ablility to learn at all. yea sure, he is in a wheel chair but what does tat have to do with his brain, what happened was physical damage, maybe a lot of trauma (since he is built like an athlete he is one) since he can't play sports with normal people.
Deletein conclusion, i agree 100%
^_^ ^_^ ^_^
if you feel bad Katherine, you would talk with sympathy, not a loud slow drawl f speach
Delete@ivan the evidence you stated which was that she was talking about a being in a wheelchair was like being in a moving prison is basically all physical since Davids physical body was paralyzed and not his brain, meaning she wasnt just nice to him because she thought she was dumb but it was also because she thpthought that the wheelchair already gave him alot of physical difficulties which also then lead to bullying
Deletemaybe she just doesnt realize that he can still understand things. but she cannot think hes dumb i mean come on hes only in a wheelchair. if he was "dumb" or mentally ill they wouldnt have taken him to that school, for people that need certain help. maybe they wouldve sent him to this school but he wouldnt be in that class. he would be in a specific one where the students need more help.
DeleteJamin has a strong point saying how Mrs. Burke assumed that he was already going through a lot which was probably a benefit towards David since he has the power of staying on the good sides of teachers, even though he probably already is on every teachers good side.
Deletehold up jamin, explain to me how David would get bullied in the first place anyhow, he is built like crazy and he just pummeled the main character like a bug, and yes, she was trying to be nice to David when she was talking to him at the end o class
DeleteYes Katherine, maybe the teacher does not know that David can comprehend things as easily as the others, but how is she to know this, maybe it was the teachers fault to for not realizing that he would be in a "Special" class instead of hers
Deletealso adding on to jamin just because she had spoke in such a voice does not mean she thinks david is stupid.this can also indicate that she s just sweet talking not only that but they were already out of class when she spoke in a loud voice. i cant say im correct but that might also be a reason she had spoke in such a manner.
DeleteIt isnt necessary that his brain has to be damaged as well, but to think, this is the same way we wouold react. if we walk out of a store or just walking on this side walk and see a handicapped person in a wheelchair, you dont know their condition but if you were to talk to them, would you talk fastly like we normally talk, or in a sweet tone?
Delete@ivan im not saying that he is getting bulied but since he is a in a wheechair people expect him to be in a bad physical condition and that he will get bullied because of that and on top of that David even acts innocent infront of teachers so they will of course feel that he is already get bullied
Deletefirst of all reshmi, i don't think that i said that he is impaired, and by the way everyone, when you see a person in a wheelchair, would it not be your first reaction to try and help them out, like how the teacher asked if she could help him in anyway
Delete@jamin, the kid pumps iron,
Deletethats all i got to say to you right now
@ivan he couldve gotten bullied before in his old school, which led him to move schools and maybe during the summer he worked out or maybe went to classes where u learn to stay fit even though you cant use your legs. if he did get bullied maybe it was because he was to shy and didnt defend himself which he may have realized now and is the reason why he is sending a message to the students about him being the boss
Delete@ivan she isnt the one that decides if david should go in a special class. its all based on his old school, and the parents. if he needed help because he cannot comprehend or learn easily it would be in his records
Delete@Katherine ,first of all, you can't just get all bulky and super strong in one summer, that is basically two months to try and build mussel so your theory is proven inconclusive, and all of you are not considering that fact that he may not have been bullied, maybe he was the school star in his school.
Delete>:) it's on
@katherine, read all the conversation between me, jamin, and devesh before you comment on the actual Convo. please and thank you
DeleteIvan Im saying IF you had to talk to someone in a wheelchair would you talk the ssame way you talk to a person who is in a normal condition, or would you change the way you talk. To make it easier to imagine, if you were related to someone who is handicapped, would you talk kindly and slowly so they understand what you are saying (not saying that his brain isnt working, just that people would assume that he is already in htis poor condition, his brain might be a bit slow) or fastly and rough like you usualyy talk with others?
Delete@Katherine, i do agree with you though that his parents would have informed the teachers and principal if david was special
DeleteI just think David is taking advantage of the teachers and students. David acts really innocent and honest in front of teachers, so they act all soft on him and talk sweetly. but on the other hand he bullies Sean and acts all tough. It like he has two different personalities, one is innocent and weak David( in front of teachers), and on the other hand, tough and bully David( in front of classmates, mainly Sean).
Delete@Reshmi, i would talk to my relative normally since i know them
Deleteto be continued...
Dipender is right, he has two different personalities, one for teachers, and one for the students
DeleteA character that pumps iron... maybe he is not bullied but how about being left out of the group? A kid in a wheelchair obviously experiences this as he his no longer part of the actual group. This could be why David pumps iron and probably takes an interest in sports so that he could be the cool kid and actually be apart of the group once again. He wanted to be happy, gain friends etc.
Delete@Rayan, yes i believe what you are saying is true, that the other children are excluding him out of the group thus he has no one, but what if makes his own little group, of new kids or "seveners" he can just as well make his own while being left out, he has the option.
Deletealso, you say he does sports to impress people or to appear cool as well as pumping iron. And yes, he probably wants to gain friends
^_^
The idea of David making his own group seems like it could happen as since most of the school knows he is able to take down a eight grader. So the school knows he is extremely tough and maybe as you said "seveners" would want to hang out with him
Deletetrue, notice how the question was about the teacher and now the focus is on david :p
Delete@Rayan it is true that the whole school saw and now knows he is the tough guy but there is a possibility that they may fear David instead of want to be with him, because of his outburst, he could be slightly unhinged (crazy/unstable)

ReplyDeleteMs burke was so nice to David and was talking loud and slow to him because of the fact that he was in a wheelchair. Most people will expect a person in a wheelchair to be calm, nice and innocent, although they are underestimating people in wheelchairs. If people in wheelchairs can play sports in their wheelchair imagine the possibiblties they can do almost everything people that are not in wheelchairs can do. People think that David is weak, calm, and innocent that is why Mr Culley had trust in David over Sean and why Ms Burke was yelling at Sean for being late but being so nice to David for coming to class at the same time. Also when Sean tried to tell Ms Burke that he was late because he was showing David the way around Ms Burke did not listen to him but when David said the same thing she listened to him and let David and Sean go.
ReplyDeleteDavid on the other hand let Ms Burke touch his wheelchair but did not let Sean touch his wheelchair because he wanted to keep his reputation of being Weak, innocent and Calm so that he could enjoy the benefits of being handicapped. Many people think that handicapped people have many negatives such as lower athletic skills and that it is harder to travel but if your in a wheelchair you don't have to walk, and if you do bad things people think that you could not have done it so they spare you. David wants these benifits, WHO WOULDN'T! Imagine doing a bad thing at having trust and you get spared most of the times. if David were to stop ms Burke from touching his wheelchair she would realize that he is in a wheelchair but he isn't actually weak or he isn't burke was so nice to David and was talking loud and slow to him because of the fact that he was in a wheelchair. Most people will expect a person in a wheelchair to be calm, nice and innocent, although they are underestimating people in wheelchairs. if people in wheelchairs can play sports in their wheelchair imagine the possibiblties they can do almost everything people that are not in polite and nice so when he does do bad things she won't trust him that much and he won't get spared as ms Burke will remember that he isn't weak and is mean and impolite
Although there are many benefits of being in a wheelchair David also understands that there are also many negatives and downsides of being handicapped. For example people underestimate him and think he is weak when in reality he appears to be pretty tough and tall based on Sean's observation. Also people may leave him out and not let him join certain games because they think that he is too weak or unathletic, and maybe he isn't because he has Jordan's and kind of gives a hint that he is athletic and good at basketball.
Personally I think that Mrs. Burke spoke loudly and slowly to David because Mrs. Burke may have thought that David would’ve understood better because well, he’s in a wheelchair. Mrs. Burke assumed that David would have a disability that may have affected some parts of the nervous system. As she may have assumed the fact that he may have a disability (once again because he is in a wheelchair) she might have assumed that he might have had hearing problems due to the condition he is in. She may have been all cuddly with David simply because people feel that they need to suck up to those who have disabilities, and since this happens a lot and is something that we all do, David found that maybe speaking to Mrs. Burke with the same tone may have sent a message to her that he understands what she’s trying to say.
ReplyDeleteDavid may have been all smiles when Mrs. Burke touched his chair but erupted at Sean because it may be a sign of respect. Or he’s on the good side of every teacher because of the state he’s currently in.. But David is smart. He knows that teachers are going to be nice to him simply because he’s in a wheelchair. He knows that since he’s in a wheelchair he can get away with a lot of things. This again ties back to why he was speaking back to Mrs. Burke with the touching of the wheelchair. He knows that as long as he respects the way Mrs. Burke or any other teacher respects him he could have an easier way to keep out of trouble.
true, he wanted to get on the good side of teachers so that they would never doubt him and treat him in a special and kind way, but why do you think David erupted at Sean?
Deleteas said in your comment yesterday it may have been because David had seen Sean as more of a rival than a friend. David may have erupted at Sean becuase he was seen as a threat towards him even though David could beat Sean in a fight.
Deletealso as stated in my post/comments he might not wanted to be looked down on by students. and have them bully him he wants to be feared so they wont come near him.

ReplyDeleteMrs. Burke was treating David like a small child because when she saw that he was in a wheelchair so she probably felt sad for him. She may have thought that since he had alot to go through already, she should be really kind to him. Also,David was really kind to Mrs. Burke when she touched his chair because he knew that if he yelled at a teacher, he would get in trouble. Another reason why is because Sean actually made David mad at first and made him get in a fight so he wouldn't like it if he touched his chair but Mrs. Burke was a teacher and no student could yell at his/her teacher. lastly, Mrs. Burke didn't do anything wrong to him so there isn't any reason he should yell at her.
ReplyDeletemanpreet remember he said the perks of being in a wheelchair. this might be one of the if he acts like he is a good boy wouldn't he benefit from it. and not only but his friends too just like how Sean got away with not having a late slip.
Delete@Devesh True, but he might have smiled to prevent him from yelling it could have been a habit he didn't wanna get in trouble for.
Deletedevesh thats true, he could be taking advantage of teachers so that if he does something wrong tommorow he wont get in trouble
Deletealso notice that david got into a fight on the first day but still got away without being punished. unlike sean who was about to be suspended.
DeleteI think that Mrs.Burke spoke loudly and slowly to David because he is in a wheelchair. This is because usually when people see a person who is disabled they think that they are different from regular people or non disabled people. they think that they need special attention or extra help. Or that you need to care more for them than others.
ReplyDeleteI think David was all smiles with Mrs.Burke when she touched the back of his chair because Mrs.Burke is a teacher and older than him. You have to respect your elders and when in school you would most likely get in trouble for yelling at a teacher. I also think David was smiles with Mrs.Burke and not Sean because Sean and David got into a fight and are not the best of friends.
Don't you think there are other reason why he was all smiles when Mrs. Bruke touched his wheelchair like since he was in a wheelchair, he didnt want her to get the wrong image for him or something else?!?
Deleteyes but lots of the other students saw Sean and David fighting and could tell a teacher and David's good image would be lost
Deletebut the vice principle already went around asking who started the fight and it was not in seans favor. so wouldn't this mean david cant ruin his good image with the teachers and SOME of the students.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletei think that the only reason why the teacher was being so weird was because she probably felt bad him that how he does not have legs that work and that sean was trying to help him to find his way to the class . and the reason why david did not say any thing to the teacher because he wanted to be a good kid in her eyes but in real life he dose not want that to happen to him
ReplyDeletewhile she pushed him on the wheel chair to his desk
ReplyDeleteall the teachers are sorry for David because hes a wheel chair boy but he is taking advantage of it because in the book David was not worried to be late for class but sean was that shows that david thinks just cause he in a wheel chair people wont o harsh on him
ReplyDeleteall of therm??? proof
DeleteI think Ms.Burke thinks David has enough troubles and just wants to be as nice as possible. She probably thinks David has a bad life because of his wheelchair and doesn't want to give him more troubles to think about. She is giving him pity just because of his condition. My evidence for this is that she didn't make him get a late slip get and she also didn't make Sean get one either because he was with him.
ReplyDeleteThe reason David got infuriated with Sean was because he didn't want to feel helpless. He probably felt that just because people treat him differently and he just wants to be like everybody else. Even though he wants to be like everybody else, he still like the perk of being in a wheelchair. He like being though of as innocent by adults and not getting in trouble. That is why he acts nice in front of the teacher. So, that he can keep his image of a good kid. Another reason he erupted on Sean could be that he wants to act tough and getting his wheelchair pushed by Sean will ruin his tough act.
Why I think Mrs. Bruke spoke loudly and slowly to David was because David was a in a wheelchair. She probably thought that he was mentally disabled too since he was in a wheelchair, so she spoke slowly and loudly with him because she tried to make what she is saying as clear as possible for David to understand, and also maybe she felt bad for David so she tried to act all nice and everything in front of David like when Sean was late she started screaming at him but when David came in and explained that Sean was just showing him around since he is new,Mrs. Bruke calmed down and felt bad and started acting all sweet, and since the vice principal was being so kind to David, the teachers are obviously going to do the same thing even though he got in a fight on the first day of school and the fact that he was in a wheelchair was shocking because why would someone in a wheelchair want to fight with others since they are already hurt/disabled.
ReplyDeleteWhy David was all smiles when Mrs. Bruke touched his chair after erupting at Sean for doing the same thing was because, Well she is a teacher and David doesn’t like Sean since they fought in the morning and since Mrs. Bruke was being so polite, he acted polite back at her because apparently someone in a wheelchair wouldn’t want to get in trouble on the first day especially if they are the NEW kid and in a wheelchair, and I’m not sure why he shouted at Sean because David was the one punching and kicking him and Sean was the one that got in trouble when he did not do anything at all. And he probably wanted to act all good and everything in front of teachers so they won’t get the wrong image of someone in a wheelchair since a lot of people expect people with disabilities to be calm and kind.

ReplyDeleteI think Mrs. Burk was speaking to loudly and slowly to David because he is Physically disabled Most people feel the need to be nicer or softer because we see them like a homeless person or a person with a mental illness we feel like they are owed something because we cannot feel the situation that there currently in. If it were me I would do the same because Humans naturally feel like that towards people that that.
ReplyDeleteI think that David was "all smiles" when Mrs. Burk touched his wheel chair because he would have some "perks" because he knew this teacher felt pity for him, Or he could be smiling casue Mrs. Burk yelled at sean again :3

DeleteBut why are the Teachers offering so much kindness She was yelling at Sean but when she saw David she loosened up and didn't yell.
DeleteI think that mrs.bruke sopke louly and slowly to david is because she thinks just because he is in a wheelchair, she felt sympathy towards him and its like the same thing as the vice principal did.
ReplyDeleteIf i was her i would have done the same thing its natural and we all do that just thinking if someone is disable or sick we just actoumatically feel sorry for them. its like when you are sick and people just ask you "Oh are you feeling better now"? or "Are you okay"?.
Also i think that mrs.bruke wanted to welcome him nicely as he was new and show him that she is not much bad of a teacher. I think david was all simles becuase first, he wanted to make a good impression or he wants her to think that he is a good student and set a good imperssion in front of the teachers but he does have a bad imperssion in front of sean or he wants sean and the other students to think that he is a bad person. that can be a reason he erupted at sean when he touched his wheelchair because he doesnt want to be treated like a weak person, he wants to be treated as the other students, he doesnt want people to think he is weak just because he is disable to walk.maybe In his old school david was know a weak kid just because he was disable. he was tired of by people treating him like that so this was his new chance, it a new school and new people and he has a chance to show people that that he is not weak like what some people might that he is.
but it was said that davids body was built up and in his previous school he may have also been one to stand up for himself rather than as you described a weak kid. david may have portrayed himself weak in front of the teachers but in the eyes of his peers we all know that david is strong enough to pummel them all. with a body described as davids it must of taken at least months to workout and eat clean. maybe david was weak once but nothing was said yet

ReplyDeleteThe way the teachers in Homelands Senior Middle School treat David (a handicapped child) just goes to show the readers that the teachers in the school believe that a child with a disability depends on another for the rest of their life. The recent teacher was Mrs.Burke and on the way she acted I make that theory. The excuse that David gave for being late was that he was being shown around the school but it was the starting of the school year so weren’t there any other new students and would she have gone easy on them if they were late, she might have not send them to the office but she wouldn’t have talked in the tone and parsing of words that were used with David. With her words Mrs.Burke is telling him that you can depend on me. I guess I or anybody else would do the same, maybe this happens because you immediately think that there’s a problem with the person, there not normal so you would either stay way or treat them like Mrs.Burke did.
ReplyDeleteWhen the author introduced David I thought that he wasn’t going to depend on anyone because of his and Sean fight but when he got all similes when Mrs.Burke touched his wheelchair when a few minutes ago he erupted at Sean for doing the same it told me that he was acting innocent and maybe he’s building an image in front of the teachers that he’s a kind, sweet, hopeless child who needs a lot of support and maybe as time goes by he would be able to get away with anything. I think that he erupted at Sean because they just had a fight like 10 minutes ago so he wasn’t gone go that easy on him and maybe he just wanted to show that he was tough and Mrs.Burke just let them off the hook so he wasn’t going to show his mean side in front of her.
i agree with you where you say that "I or nobody else would do the same" after "with her words mrs. bruke is telling that you can depend on me" because we understand that the kid is in a wheelchair, but he is still the same as the others except he is in a wheelchair and he should be treated like others too. And just because WE know that he isnt deaf but mrs. bruke doesnt, she probably thinks that he is innocent, kind and nice.. but i would still try to be polite to him for a few days, but David is just taking advantage of everyone, because he even if Sean speaks up, they are still not going to believe him because HE IS IN A WHEELCHAIR... Don't you agree?!
Delete@zohaa dont you think another reason david never let sean touch his wheel chair is to act tough in front of students to gain rep ( reputation ) so he is not seen as a weakling.
DeleteWe don't just see disabled kids, just as disabled kids we see them as kids with much more problems Like David's physically disabled we would see him with many more problems. Its just how we naturally react.
ReplyDeleteMrs.Burke was treating David like a small kid due do his conditions being in a wheel chair, she spoke loudly and slowly to David thinking that he has a problem of hearing and understanding. David had to smile when Mrs.Burke touched his chair because he knew that he could not have yelled or be rude to Mrs.Burke. He had no other way then to smile to let Mrs.Burke to fell happy. I think that David had to treat Sean and Mrs.Burke because she is a teacher and Sean is a student.
ReplyDeleteMrs Burk was talking to David slowly and loudly because he is a paraplegic\handicap and she thinks that he is not only handicapped but may have some problems that are affecting his motor skills and responsive skills. She also dosent want to be rude to the new kid who can't walk and she doesn't want to make him feel any worse that he already dose (when really David doesn't care at all about his condition). Later when Mrs Burk comes up to david and pushes his wheel chair he seems not to care at all but when Sean touched the chair he shaped at him. He is doing this to build a reputation amongst his peers to seem like a good student so when fights or any type of problem starts he will seem like the good\innocent student and on top of that he is handicap so no one is really going to blame the guy
