Simple Ideas and Scientific Discoveries

Hey Team watch the video and post your comments.

What were you surprised to learn?

What information will you share with a friend or parent and why?

Predict that next great scientific discovery

  1. I never knew about how someone found the earths circumfernece using 2 sticks that were stuck in the ground in 2 different places....that was pretty cool how a person....started from being a librarian...asked himself a question...and soon made a great discovery.

    1. that is pretty cool only using 2 sticks.

    2. yeah all he needed was 2 starting points to make a great historical discovery.

  2. what i was surprised to learn was that simple idea and point of view can become huge scientific discoveries and that speed of light some seemed very interesting.

    1. yea you just got to believe in your ideas.

  3. I was surprised to learn that when Adam was talking about the man and the gear-looking thingie, that that was essentially the first way to make pictures move across a projector screen.

I would share this with my Grandfather because he loves old-timey film and music stuff so he would definitely be interested in this.

I predict the next great scientific discovery will be being able to make cars able to hover a few inches above the roads causing less heat on the pavement which means less heat goes out into the Atmosphere which means LESS HEAT WAVES YUSSSS.

    1. I like the way you recommended this to your grandpa.

  4. The thing that surprised me the most was how people just like us, asked a simple question that sparked their need to learn more. Like the man that had tried imitating Galileo's experiment an d found the earths circumference. That discovery I would also tell someone about because it's amazing that using 2 sticks and simple math found out the circumference of the earth.

    2. My bad I said he imitated Galileo's experiment, that was the one with the gear.

  5. I was surprise to learn that so many people thought the earth is flat until someone pointed it out. in geography I read that a man argued with everyone about the shape that he got hung to death. and what was weird is that someone found the earth circumference using 2 stick.

    1. yes that was fascinating i never knew alot more people already knew the earth was a sphere

  6. well i would share then speed of light story to a friend how enjoy this topic.I would all so tell my dad cause he loves to learn interesting thing about the world.

  8. The next scientific discovery can be lots of things, especially after the fact of how much humans have discovered and how far we've gone in technological discoveries also. But I think that the next thing to be discovered is... I'm not sure. We've already discovered so much, what is next? I don't think I can answer that. I'll just guess a flying something, like a hover car.

  9. What I was surprised to learn was how the person was able to find the circumference of the Earth by noticing two different points on the Earth. That was really amazing. Also I really got surprised was that normal people like us were able to learn so much by asking little questions.

  10. The thing i was surprised to learn was that how the scientist found the circumference of the earth by using a stick.. And how he got to know that the earth was in a spherical shape. And also i was surprised by the way how he find the speed of light.

The information i would share with my parents or a friends would be that how the scientist found the circumference of the earth. also the way the scientist calculate the apeed of light and he discovered in 1849.

  11. Well i think the next discovery will have something to do with the outer space, alot of research has been happening latly about planets that we could be able to live on and breath.

  12. what i was surprised to learn was how early some discoveries occurred like calculating the earth size long time ago also when he said that all the other intellectual people already knew that the earth was spherical

what i would share is everything i learnt from this video
and how it is just the matter of time till we find another great discoveries

the next great discovery to my prediction is finding out that the moon is livable as they will find water another discovery would be finding aliens

  13. I would share the speed of light story and the story on how the circumference of the Earth was found to my friend or Parents.

  14. This video is very interesting! It was very suprising to learn the first thought that went through their creative mind before, they made an amazing discovery. When I think of science, I think of relative tools such as a microscope, digital technology, internet, and such. The discovery of finding the measurement of the world by the third librarian had only used his head , a well , and the sun! The simplicity of supplies he had used to find such a big dicovery was very suprising.

    1. I would definitly share the story of findng the measurents of the world just by using simple materials.

  15. I was actually surprised to know that christopher columbus didn’t discover that the earth was round it was actually aristotle that did that way back before.

When I learn something new or interesting there’s no point of telling my parents because my dad will end up saying that he already knows about it so I don’t even bother with that.

I thing that the next scientific discovery would be that scientists will make fake trees that produce oxygen on its own and dose lots of cool stuff too.

Sometimes i get a really stupid feeling watching ted videos on the blog because i would end up agreeing to what the host says, then when we would go to class mr.cheney would come up with all these ideas that why the host is wrong and I would feel so stupid.

  16. One thing that I learned was that so many years ago where technology that we have today didn't exist, this one guy used a stick and found the degrees Celsius from the axle as well as the circumference of the circular well, to find the diameter of the earth. This is one thing that I learned. But, I also learned that using simple things you are able to create and achieve big things.

  17. It's amazing to know that you can invent and dicover new things by just curiosity. These three men were only curious and just thought a bit harder to create something new. I learned about the speed of light(just a little bit) and I'd love to learn more about it.
I just hope in the future we can be able to visit all planets and discover new planets and places to live.

  18. What surprised me was something simple known very well. A question may be simple, But the answer can do and take you to wonders. But often we take that for granted and answer with a simple answer. Not many people choose to "turn on" their creativity, or have any, really, including me, but when they do, I'm amazed only wishing I could do that. How he(TED speaker)pointed out how when he questions something, he goes back, not just to research that, but examine into it's depths. To find who created it, how they did it, and how they came to understand it. And how that sparks greater thinking and answers in this case. It seems as though it does trigger better thinking, although I've never tried it. I was as well surprised at how one of the scientists he spoke of solved the circumference of the earth, I believe, and how all those things stuck to his mind. They were so complicated.

  19. The thing that surprised me is the Columbus didnt find out the world was round, it was Aristotle, he found this experiment way before Columbus 2000 years ago.

  20. The thing I found surprising is that Columbus didnt find out the world was round and he took all the credit. It was Aristotle who found out that the world was round with a simple experiment using everyday products (that are not electronic). He found this theory about 1000 years before Columbus. That is the information I will give my parents and friends.

  21. The thing that mostly surprised me was the amount of complex projects that they went trough to get such a product out of it. The things that they went trough is pretty cool, different formulas such as inertia got my attention right off of the bat. Inertia itself is a very interesting topic due to the mysteries that it brings to scientists. It was said to be a unknown fact.

  22. i really enjoy the story of how they found of how fast the speed of light is cool.the idea of light being extremely fast seem very outside the box back in the day

  23. The next invention might be immortal humans...

  24. I don't have much to say, but I will definitely show the video to my brother. It's..interesting, as well as it felt shorter than it was.

  25. The next invention I think would be flying cars.

  26. What really astonished me that the fact was how they came to the conclusion that the earth was a circular shape,by having sighted the earth's reflection on the moon itself. How amusing that just a simple act defined the earths shape and geography. Just a simple sighting of having to have noticed the earths reflection our earth was known as a sphere to many. All my life I’ve questioned how it was the earth was round, and how it was discopvered.I had thought the people who had gone to space might have biased that. And made the statement that the earth is a circular shape. Ver y interesting how one person so intellectual to have made a conclusion just by seeing a shadow.
