The Cheat

Hey Team here are two conflicting and opposite opinions about the book the Cheat.

Read the reviews and then write your own mid way review of the book The Cheat (pretend you are writing your review for the school newsletter and you are trying to inform other students in grade 7 and 8 about the book.)

Review 1

This is a middle school book about cheating on a geography midterm. What makes it charming and thought-provoking is the fact that it's told from the points of view of six kids who were involved, with 2 or 3 pages of text at a time told in each kid's distinctive voice. The voices are great: they make the book.

Review 2
This is a book that I picked up as a MS reading teacher. I try to read books to recommend for my students. I would NOT recommend this book. The book focuses on a group of friends who get caught (some not caught) cheating on a midterm. The narration moves from person to person. I felt like there were too many voices--4 main, 2 supporting--for middle school students to follow. Because there were so many voice, the characters, in my opinion, were never really developed at all. I found myself asking, "Wait, is she the one who's dad died? or did he leave her mom? Which one was that again?" I also felt that there was no real resolution to the problem. The book explained what happened, but nothing was really resolved. Overall, a quick read, but not one that I would recommend to my students

  1. The cheat has been a great book, it has always had my attention since the start. But there is a very unique way in the writing, but at times I get very confused I often find myself asking was she the one….? The book has a weak beginning because it just starts off as the perspective of person then the others but then again the whole book goes on like this. I really don’t find any benefits of the book being this way. Rather than being in the situation of an argument, in that case you can hear what every person has to say or witnessed.
The book has a very nice twist to it, how one of the characters is stuck making the decision of her life. And the others that made the worst decision of their lives. Overall it is a great book, I would recommend it because of it’s moral to kids in high school.

    1. You don't think having all characters perspectives and thoughts in the book makes a difference? You don't think it has any benefit?

    2. You don't think the way the author wrote each characters personality in a different format a bit engaging? rather than feeling like a third person.

    3. I would rather think this is the consequences of cheating. It would be preparing you for university where if you cheat, you get kicked out without a refund

    4. "Put your self in someone else's shoes" I think this book makes that statement come to life, and I would consider that a benefit.

      Delete
    5. I also find the characters confusing so they should minimize the amount of characters to make it less confusing. Just cut out the pointless characters

      Delete
    6. @Suhaib Who would you consider a pointless character? To me, they all have a decent amount of meaning.

    7. Indeed Gitie, I think that giving the characters perspectives and thoughts make the book very intriguing because usually in books your focused on one characters thoughts and sights but in the cheat you see all the characters perspectives and thoughts and I think it helps make the book more understanding of the situation in a way.

    8. If you find it reptative, then why would you recommend it?

    9. deandre and rochelle i am not dis agreeing with you itt is nice to have the diffrent prespectives of diffrent people but it is very hard to memorize the book when everything does fall into sequences.

    11. well it could get confusing at some point but it is something great to read. It gives perspectives of each character.

    12. it is confusing, a whole lot info comes at you, because even at every small event there alot of things to know. me personally dont like the way of writing i get confused between katie and ruby, just to make ruby is the one that didnt cheat and katie is dans girlfriend?

    13. would you prefer the book if it was written in the style of rebound, if you were the author what would you change from the book using your own opinion?

    15. I disagree rajveer . Every character has different personality . Just how i could tell you and DeAndre apart from your personality's mostly because you two act , talk, and behave different

    16. Vice Versa (Ruby is Dan's ex/girlfriend, Katie is Sarah's "best friend"
I think if you enjoy the book enough, you will know the book as well as its characters.

    17. Yes this books moral is a great way of students not cheating and knowing the consequences to it.

      Delete
    18. But Rajveer if it weren't written in the characters perspectives would the book still be the same? I don't think the book would be as good or even be so unique and extraordinary if the characters perspectives weren't there, I think that makes the book.

      Delete
    19. well even though rebound was in first person, we still know alot of there characteristics even though we dont see the book thorought there eyes.

      Delete
    20. I disagree with you. Each character has their own personality, like how Sarah is poetic, Katie is organized, Ruby is a drama Queen and so forth. Simular to what Rochelle said. By the way, I'm Abby

    21. deandre if it was written very powrefully through one character the book could have just as much of a hit on us a it did.

      Delete
    22. If you hadn't seen a character in this story then wouldn't they be pointless?

      Delete
    23. Rajveer, But do you think we would know the character a lot better if it was written in their perspective. I mean if it was written in David's perspective as well, we would probably know a lot more about him, as well as a lot faster.

      Delete
    24. we knew the characters personality's in rebound over time . But we didn't exactly know we imagined and predicted on our thoughts .

      Delete
    25. Rajveer I disagree, even if it were written very strong 1st person I still don't think it would be as great, the different perspectives in the book of each character make it the book, I think without the perspectives it wouldn't be the cheat, if you get what I mean.

      Delete
    26. but in the book it doesnt completly discribe them but even if it was written like this we would only know the persons personality, but thourough first person, it doesnt describe them completly but givesus a good idea of who they are.

  2. The cheat is a very exclusive text, which really takes our attention and gets the readers into the book. This book is written in a very rare and unique type of text, where each chapter has a different character from the book telling their perspective. When we usually read novels, they are from just one perspective, which doesn't allow us to think about the other consequences and point of view. This book involves the words, thoughts and opinion of every character. This book isn't based on someone's real life story, but is sure based on real life consequences. In this book, it just doesn't mention the outcome of cheating, but as well mentions the effects on personal lives. The book is filled with many twits and turns in friendship, parents, school and etc. As well we get to know the different reactions of parents on the topic of there children cheating. This book can get confusing if you don't put all your focus on it, because you may not know which character is talking. But this a very rare confusion. The book is quite nice and interesting, I would recommended this book to all middle school students, so it gives them the strong idea of what might happen if they were on the character's place.

    1. I agree with your opinion on The Cheat but your justification as to why every middle school student should read is because they should get and idea of what would happen if they cheated, but do you believe that so many students will even make an attempt to cheat without reading this book?

      Delete
    2. Yes I do believe that many middle school students, will stop make an attempt to cheat without reading this book, and it may even be possible that many kids might cheat even though they have read this book. But like many books has a moral and a main point that helps many readers think about the consequences, this book can help as well.

      Delete
    3. I agree with Srushti, the fact is that the moral of the book would help the make the reader understand all the consequences they would have to face if they cheat some how in life.

      Delete
    4. How many stars would you give the book out of five

      Delete
    5. 4/5 since children can be influenced to cheat even after reading this book.

      Delete
    6. I would personally give this book a 4/5 as well, it could be confusing but overall has a great moral.

  3. The cheat is a very different novel compared to all the others we are used to - it's written in the perspective of all 6 main characters and can be confusing for many of the first time readers. There are many points in the book where three or four characters have spoken but it has to be noted that they have shared their part of the same time. If you read this book for the first time, you'll notice that every character has a distinguished personality that may be a little exaggerated when it's showed through the writing. I wouldn't say that this book is ideal for every middle school student because the readers have to make sure that they don't mind inferring throughout the book to find out whether the current character is talking about the same time period as the previous or not. In my opinion, I would say it is worth reading just as something new.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with the fact of the different personalities being exaggerated. So do you think that helps remembering which character is talking, or it still may be confusing?

      Delete
    2. There are many books that even though there is just one voice that narrates, and yet some readers have to go over for clarification, but in The Cheat, even after the personalities being exaggerated, there is also how different they are that is a factor to remembering which character it is.

      Delete
    3. Have you ever been confused in understanding which character is talking? If not, what was the reason that helped you to not lose your focus?

      Delete
    4. I have been confused in the characters but not very often because the "chapters" are relatively short and it's not that hard to remember which character it is for that part apart from the factor of personalities.

  4. In class, we are reading a book called "The Cheat". The Cheat is about students who cheat on a mid-term exam in geography class. The cheating made students gain trust issues now. Best friends don't talk much, Students getting suspended, or grounded. This has a pretty good plot twist!
I would say it's a very interesting book! From books I have read so far, this one is different. It's not separated in chapters. It's actually written in each of the 6 main characters' point of view. It can be confusing at times, but it is a pretty good book.

    2. I would recommend this book to students in middle school, or maybe even high school. They should know the consequences of cheating. Especially if its a mid-term exam! Hopefully after reading this, students may actually understand and wont risk everything by cheating. This book makes it look like you can risk your trust for people, friendship, etc.

    5. Yes, the book has taught me some things. Before, I said that "hopefully after reading this, students may actually understand and wont risk everything by cheating...." <-- That's pretty much what the book had taught me so far. Maybe once we're done the book, I would have learnt more.

      Delete
    6. The fact that every character has their own voice in this book interests me because it makes it different from other book. Other books I have read aren't anything like this, Most of the time, books are written in only ONE character's perspective. This one is in 6 different ones.

      Delete
    7. Do you think that it would be more interesting or confusing, if there were the perspective of more then 6 characters in this book? Why?

  5. The Cheat is about a group of middle school kids that end up getting there hands on last years mid term exams. This book has a very different lay out of how it is read which I find very unique, it gives the same story line but with every characters perspective. The book is very intriguing but can be a bit confusing at times. When you start off in the beginning you jump straight in as Sara, one of the 6 main characters and the thing I like most about the book is each character has there own background of speaking, for example Sara is a poet who generally when speaking rhymes like a poem. The book has many different unique and extraordinary idea and writing formats which make it very interesting and very grasping. I would recommend this book to people who like to try different things and enjoy a good story line.

  7. The cheat is a very inventive book so far . The story was able to capture my attention in a very unique and inventive way . I love how every characters personality's was shown through the text . This really allowed me to picture the characters in a more specific way . I found the books opening not very strong but the format of it caught my attention and was able to make me engaged because it felt like the character was talking to you , or like you were there with them unlike feeling like the third person.
This book has many cliff hangers , i never know who's going to confess, I had made many predictions through out the book so far but not many has come true , the book changes very fast . it always has me engaged because I want to know what happens next , so far I really like the book and all the lessons its teaching me . I would recommend this book to many kids in middle school or high school , it is a very engaging book and the story also has a lesson which I feel we could all learn from .

  8. What I think of the book so far is that is really realistic. People cheat all the time sometimes they get caught sometimes they don't. The book is occasionally confusing. The reason is it quickly changes chapters and becomes a little un relevant. The book has a good moral, but at the same time it shows realism. There are a lot of middle schoolers that don't believe in snitching and bailing out. Also middle schoolers have a lot of pride to swallow if we snitch. Also if you snitch, you will become a bullying target and lose your reputation. This problem maybe In many schools but not majoring in ours.

  9. The cheat is a interesting book and all, but it is not as unique as rebound. Cheat it based on some grade 8 students just like rebound, but rebound gives you move to look for, make you want to know what will happen next. With the cheat you want to know what will happen next, but you don't want to know what happen next. 10. The Cheat by Amy Goldman Koss
I personally found this book phenomenal from what we have read so far. Each individual character "speaks" on their own. It gives you a better understanding of the book itself. This book makes the "Put your self in someone else's shoes" statement come to life! and I personally love how this book does that! Amy (author) certainly did a fantastic job in that! And I/we haven't even finished this as yet. This book is exceptional! It definitely excels what I, individually look for in a book. I can't really think of any negatives about this book, so I definitely recommend it for you to read.

    4. Well I am fond of the multiple personality's. I can say I liked Rob's personality the "most". Because he did seem the most relate-able. What I think was his over reaction, was one of on my favourite part. As well as Sarah and her evil side. I also found that entertaining as well.

I don't remember who Dan or rob are most of the times I figure it out but other days I wait and listen to what they are saying then recall.
The cheat is very engaging, absorbing and interesting book, these things include a new way to read, teenager relating, and moral learning but also has it's cons such as confusing to understand.

I would give "The Cheat" 4 out of 5 stars 4/5

  12. The cheat is a book about six middle school students cheating on a geography midterm and how they all got caught. What makes the book a little bit interesting is that every two pages or so the book is told from one of the six characters point of view. However, thus far, “The Cheat” is a good book in my eyes, not a great one. I say that because I think it has a very child-like concept of cheaters will never win. It’s not fair at all but ultimately sometimes they do win, in the real world, and the book didn’t make that text-to-world connection. I don’t know what’s next, or how the book ends, maybe there’s even a twist that’ll bring the book to life but so far it’s an alright book.

  13. The cheat is a very interesting book. The main conflict in this story is that Sara, the main character in the book ,accepted answers for a midterm test from a kid who was obsessed over her beauty.Sara then shared the answers to a few of her friends. A few of them got caught for cheating, including Sara. There are six teens in this book who are telling their different opinions in different sections. Each sections is about a couple or more pages. This book is well written by Amy Glodman Koss. For 7th and 8th graders this book is very appropriate and enjoyable. This book can teach them the consequence that is possible in cheating.

  14. I thought it was a great and realistic book, once you start to know all the characters and know what's happening , you'll start to like the book. From the beginning, I had no interest, to read the book. (Cheat). The first chapter of the book confused me a bit, because the story had no introduction. It jus stared off with 2-4 voices. Its like if you read a book from the middle of the story. Youd get really confused and not know what happening. You have no basic concept of how the story began. Its just like that with the cheat. Also one of the cheat characters really annoys me. Her name is ruby, everytime you read her talk to her friends. Its always like this. Like omg, like really, like like like........ There is way to much of her saying 'like'. The thing i do like about this book is that, when you are actully caught for cheating, you suffer the same consequence and drama just like the book. Overall i think its a great book 3/5.

  15. The cheat is a book that I really enjoyed so far. Unlike other books this book is kind of different. Other books are always from the author's perspective or maybe from one the character's perspective. But this book amazes me. It is not from the author's or one of the character's perspective, it is from the perspective of the 6 main characters. In the way they would talk (poetry, clam and cool, organized with options,etc.). Therefor sometimes I do get confused, that who is who, but everyone has a different way of talking, which is how it is easier to recognize them. Overall, I think that this book is a great book, and I would definitely recommend it. That's because this book is quite interesting, and it has a great moral, which I think every kid should learn.

Most of it doesn't really make that much of a sense. I was puzzled when it came to other people talking from their perspective. Well this book also allows perspectives of parents and how they react to the situation on cheating. On a second thought most books aren't based this way, most only rely on one character but this book has a perspective of each character. This is something that makes it different then other books. This book has many twists which allows you to want to read again and again. As a matter of fact the cheat is a great and interesting book and I would totally recommend this book to middle school and high school students.

Yes they do know that cheating is bad in general, but they really didn't have an idea of them being grounded, friendship issues and etc. As an example, when you are completing a task you always think positive, never "negative". That's what the characters were thinking, they were thinking positive, assuming that they will pass the exams. They weren't thinking negative by wondering what consequences can take place.

Yes they were absolutely confident of not being caught. I agree that every person is at the equal risk of getting caught, and not getting caught. But it isn't true that everyone person thinks"NEGATIVE". As I said before they weren't aware of the consequences, because they didn't no the answers were WRONG.

  17. The Cheat is a moral book. It's a story of six middle school kids having to be involved with cheating on a midterm exam and the troubles and consequences each teen faces. I find this book a little hard to keep track of. It is definitely a book with different text and content. And this for me, is a good thing for the reason that it makes me familiar with different styles of writing. I really believe that this book has a very unique way of divulging the story. The story could have been written in different content by the author, but this one completely differs. Each chapter or few pages is written as the point of view or perspective of each kid in the cheating dilemma. That is what makes the book unorthodox and original. I would recommend this book to middle school students by virtue of the clever content and significance

    1. What do you think are the benefits of the different characters speaking instead of the author, except of the fact that it makes you familiar with different styles of writing?

    2. The change of characters speaking make the book humorous and amusing. It makes you want to listen because each character has a different personality and trait that makes them who they are.

    3. Have you ever read a book with a story close to this? Or a book with the same style of text?

    4. I totally agree with Tamana even though I find it a bit confusing. knowing every character allows you to know their personality and how they are.

  18. The Cheat is a phenomenal book for students to read. Speaking as a student, I would reccommand this book to people because of the story's concept, teaching you a lesson at the end of the day, being able to make reading comprehensions, make predictions, thoughts, and etc. The Cheat is a very unique type of novel, 3 students cheated on a geography midterm, all 3 were caught at the act, and now are in dilemma through there friendship and education. What I like personally from this novel is the way it is written. This is written in a very rare format. When reading novels, we read from one person perspective. The cheat on the other hand is written in all the main characters perspective each chapter. This is a great way to write and show us the readers what's happening in every corner of the novel. Again,I can't emphasize how much recommend this book. This book isn't just a regular book, if you really are into this book, you learn something and I am guaranteed you will, I know I did. I learn that "winners never cheat, and cheaters never win." Cheating can just get you into serious consequences especially in the future.

    1. Do you think the book would have a good or bad influence to students? Would it encourage cheating or discourage?

      Delete
    2. This book would have a good influence on students and it would dis encourage cheating because, the way the story is taking place, these students are in deep consequences at the moment, and this an reflect on us if we think about it, doing this in high school, college and so on. You are in way deeper consequences woser than what they are now. So yeah this does have good influence.

    3. What are the disadvantages of the book written in just the author's perspective vs point of views from all characters?

      Delete
    4. From the author perspective
-You only see it in one view of the story
-you don't really see what's happening
      From all point of views
-it might be confusing who's speaking
      -hard to follow along

  19. The cheat is a interesting book and all, but it is not as unique as rebound. Cheat it based on some grade 8 students just like rebound, but rebound gives you move to look for, make you want to know what will happen next. With the cheat you want to know what will happen next, but you don't want to know what happen next. The book just dead that how I find this book,

    1. Me personally I think the way the cheat was written is better than Rebound but then again I can't really say that because each book has it's way of being written but I disagree when you say "With the cheat you know what will happen next" because you really don't know what will happen next, like with Rob right now walking straight and not stopping, i'm pretty sure it's hard to know for certain what's going to happen to him. You don't think the way the book is written with all the characters perspectives is unique ?

    2. Agreed with DeAndre^
What about the way it is written? Or the Cheat individually.

    4. "With the cheat you want to know what will happen next, but you don't want to know what happen next."
You wrote this in your response ^^^
      What does this mean?
Are there any notable differences that distinguish why or why not you enjoy Rebound more than The Cheat?

  20. I really never liked the cheat its not a great book i wouldn't read the book if i wasn't told to its not that entertaining. the writing style is pretty cool but it often doesn't relate to the flow of the book. One minute their in trouble in a office the next its about a girl and her boyfriend problems.Like really it gets really annoying during the character switches overall its not that great or thrilling of a book maybe people interested in school life would find the book interesting but other than that i wouldn't give this book to someone to read it.

  21. The cheat has been a great book for me so far because it is written in such a way that you are suppose to read with attitude to enjoy the book, The other reason is that this book is trying to teach you a lesson about cheating which is it is not good if you cheat or else if you get found cheating there could be lots of consequences, like for example you will be having to write something that says i wont cheat again, or you might be sent home for the rest of the day and get a bad grade, or you can also get expelled from school. I would also recommend this book to other students so then they will know not to cheat in tests.

    3. I do like the style of the book it is written in because then it makes you read more because some people stop on chapters but in this book it does not have any chapters so it will make you read this book until you finish it, and Mannat no I would not change this style into a normal book because this book is more better and interesting this way instead of a normal way.

  22. 'The Cheat" Is the book which is our current novel study in 8B. Although we haven't finished the whole book yet, I'd say that so far, it's pretty solid.

"The Cheat" Is about four students (plus 2), who've been busted attempting to cheat on their midterm. The book plays out in a whole new level, not using chapters, but instead using perspectives,
Having many people's perspectives can be unique, yet difficult to understand by some. Sometimes, the character's backstory gets jumbled up in our minds, and we get confused. Other times, it slows down character development. Having more that two perspectives can be difficult, especially when there is no third person POV. It's very interesting, and I love how each character expresses themselves through their own, individual POV's. The pacing is fine, giving you plot development after every few chapters. Furthermore, I think that it has a realistic feel to it, so I'm not expecting a romanticised ending. If Koss adds a happy-fairy-tale-rainbows-and-sunshine ending, She'll kill the book. She's murder it horrendously and butcher it.

Our class recently finished another novel study called "Rebound".
    I can't say I enjoyed "The Cheat" More, because I didn't.
Rebound had perfect Character Development, where we learned so much, yet so little about David. Slowly, we uncovered how David truly felt, all while getting hints and nudges about his buried feelings and getting the blunt of his personality.
It's pacing was okay as well, using most time to allow David, -the mean and scary boy in a wheelchair- to grow on you.
By the end of the book, you can never say that you hate David. Never.
The difference in the use of perspectives is the fact that Koss tried to add many, succeeding in creativity, yet confusing a portion of her readers. Walters took us all by surprise when we'd thought the book was in point of view with David.
Instead, he uses Sean's POV, and we understood easily.

Holding "The Cheat" next to "Rebound", I can tell that it's not one of the books that I would recommend to others. Sure, It's entertaining, but so are lots of other books. If you're looking for any book, really, and it doesn't really matter what you read, you just want to read something decent, this book is fine.

  23. The Cheat is a great book, other than most books that are in chapters, this book is in the 6 main character perspectives and you read the book differently than most books ,it's unique.the book can be confusing sometimes because it's a different format of writing. The characters in the book are all unique, they have different attitudes like Ruby(one of the main characters)always like in all of sentences and Dan who is always chill, not nervous and doesn't panic.
Overall this book teaches a good lesson to middle school students and also I think a lot of students can make connections and relate to this book because they might have cheated once or twice. In my opinion it's a great book and you should read The cheat because the format of writing is different .

  26. This book is about six kids in grade eight who cheat together on a midterm geography test,Some get caught and some back out on the day of the test, This book is interesting and amazing,In the begging it's was a little confusing and hard to understand with the different voices and perspectives, All of these students also have a different way of remembering the answers with songs, poems and ect. I would recommend this book to middle school students so they learn the consequences and why you shouldn't cheat in general.
