This is a powerful video on the state of modern education.

Ken Robinson a well know advocate of the arts and creativity delivers a funny but powerful plea to shift how we teach to inspire and allow stundents to shine.

Watch the video and then respond to the following prompt:

1.  Do you feel you are creative? How could or does the school give you the freedom and environment to be creative.  Is there any suggestions you would make for the class to allow for more creativity

reply to 3 other students and reply to those that comment on your post

  1. In my opinion,I am more creative when it comes to photography.I like finding different angles and positions to make my photo pop more. In our class, I think we have a good amount of chances to practice our photography skills, for example, our Rebound photo assignment. Also, Mr.Cheney gives us the freedom to search around the school and find good backgrounds and lighting for our photos.
A suggestion I have is that I think that we should have more drawing and painting period especially for those students who really enjoy that type of art. Also, I think we should really encourage more students to practice their art skills.

    1. I agree with this and I also like photography. I think my best art is photography.

    2. The painting will come... and yes students have very little opportunity to do art unless it is school

    3. I completely agree. Drawing and painting periods would be a great way to keep students interested in school and would actually give them something to look forward to.

    4. Agreed. I think painting involves a lot of creativity and is very enjoyable.

  2. Marcos: I think personally I am vary vcreative when I want to be. For example in a subject like math I won’t be as creative because I don’t have much interest in it. But something like science or art I will cause I have lots or my rest in these certain subjects. I feel the teachers in the school give us a good amount of creative freedom but one teacher that stands out the most to me is mr.channey. Mr.channey s the first teacher I have ever seen incorporate photography in our class, and I think it’s amazing cause I love photography and it’s a subject that aows us to be creative. One thing I would suggest to our school is to make more interactive and hanfpds on assignments and subject to get students interested and creative.

    7. I agree with you because Mr.Cheney has really helped us all find our creativity, weather it was in photography or in painting and drawing.

  3. Yes, I feel like I am creative. The schools do make us feel creative but we don't show it sometimes. Like how the school makes us feel creative is by the school dance, BAC and many more things like that, that make us show that we are creative and having a plan for the school so they can listen to our ideas. Another way the school shows us that we our creative is having the biggest art project is by doing a real eye, like drawing it, and I love to draw but it will be really hard to do.

For our class to be creative, we need to stop being shy and to but our work out there and be proud of what you did and believe in yourself even if other people don't. Maybe one more thing is to decorate the class a little bit for examples of things like if we don't get the task we have, we have the examples on the board.

    3. i agree with you roland all students in our class need to try harder to not be shy and participate in many activities i help our creativity. and i think that should go for all classes in in all schools.

      Delete
    4. shyness is a big factor...as a teacher when you see kids reluctant to engage with work then you equally become reluctant to try new fun and creative assignments!

      Delete
    5. That is true, because some people don't like to show what they like and stuff because they are shy.

      Delete
    6. That is true Mr.Cheney, that's why you have those morning task, like the mind games monday, which is a really good thing to get the day going and keep us active and not getting shy.

      Delete
    7. I agree with you Roland having confidence makes you feel free sometimes, and being shy does affect your learning.

  4. The school could have a more creative environment by letting us make are own answers and helping all of us to find those answers. The school environment could also give us more freedom by giving us more time to do things when we need to. Some of my suggestions to make a class be more creative is that you should put up quotes that could make other people feel inspired. You can also put a lot of the students work up to make them feel nice about what they did.

Another one of my suggestions is that teacher could do activities in the morning to get the students pumped and ready for a god day of learning.

    1. I agree but what do you mean by letting us make our own answer and helping us find those answer? But other than that, I agree.

    7. I understand what you are trying to say but I feel like the way our class is run really works out. If we didnt have exact due dates, we would all struggle to get our work done because we would keep putting it off.

  5. Do schools help or hurt students Creativity
In my opinion, i am very creative when it comes to building structures, i love to build and i want to create new things like trying different things like something creative but useful for this world. There are things where public wants people to create something that's useful for them i wish that we have more art class and build many variety of things. Throughout history, the great people always wanted to show their strength and might by creating large structures. Today, also it remains a way of attracting pride and prestige. While making large structure is not wrong, what we must always be careful is to bring in the best precautions and technical developments, architectural principles to make them as safe as possible.

  7. I think that I am creative but not as creative as other people in my class or school. I want to become better than what I am now at taking photos and drawing. The school should make more art contests for the student who enjoy the arts. When we get art project we usually have to stick to a specific criteria instead of us getting to choose what to draw so that we can create creative. Our school should also make the environment more suitable for the arts.

We should have more periods to work on our art and we should also have more art and photography assignments. There is not a lot of other stuff we need.

  8. I personally believe that in my own way, i’m somewhat creative. I like solving problems in ways that one probably wouldn't think of using. I often use strategies in word problems that one might call weird or unnecessary but its always been what’s easiest for me. Although i haven't been here for a while i can think of a couple examples of us being given freedom to be creative; such as during dance class our teacher often gives us freedom to freestyle and do whatever's on our mind. We also got freedom during our Rebound photography project, Mr. Cheney gave us a lot of freedom when it came to our pictures as long as it was within the rubrik. I think that a good way to give our class more freedom for creativity is to have more visual art projects or tasks\assignments that require a more hands-on take of things.

  9. The article CREATIVITY is a thing that everyone should have from childhood, now and future. Every kid can become whatever they want but sometimes their teachers or even their parents don't want their son to become what they want to become, LIke ken Robinson said that “how good you look” it wont change the person creativity how you draw or write.

What Ken Robinson said that adults lose their creativity since their childhood because of school. They grow out of creativity but not in because if it was in they would do whatever they want in school. Many things changed from now. In the 19th century it used to be that if you have a degree you would have a job but now you need an MA and etc for getting a high professional job. When Ken said that women's are more better handling more things at a time. So that is creative. Also Ken also mentioned in his video that a girl name Julie wasn't paying attention in school and keep on playing with her stuff and one day a teacher said that she has 80HD so their parents took her to the doctor and got to know that she doesn't have 80hd but she wants to move like a girl from Bella. So she was sent to a school that has an activity and now she is a multi-millionaire. The last main point is from Jonac salt that “IF ONLY INSECTS DESIAPER IN 50 YEARS ALL LIVES WILL END AND ONLY HUMANS DESIAPER IN 50 YEARS ALL OF THE PHONE WILL BE DEAD” . Mr ken only mentioned about arts that how you can do creativity In other things like math or other subjects, thanks to MR.Cheney. In my opinion we as humans should let kids want they want to be and what they want to do so they could express who they are and what kid of person are you. I am creative on like taking photos because you can explore many elements or the new things around the world. So we should not pressure the kids and let them explore but sometimes we have to because they are not listing to us or etc. But people who know what is creativity they deserve it.

if i let students do what they want how productive or creative do you think that would be?

      Delete
    2. I agree that kids should not be pressured into doing things they don't want as a career, but I do think schools are starting to do that, and they are starting to be open for more career choices. They also are helping kids who have ADHD as well.

  10. I am not confident in my creativity. I believe that if I'm interested in the assignment, I can come up with an exceptional idea. School from my experience, typically doesn't allow kids to be different. Many teachers have strict guidelines. A right or wrong. Luckily, Mr. Cheney's photography assignment is a very good project where students have creative control and there isn't a box restricting kids to be unique. The class emblem was also an assignment that aloud us students creative freedom.

I think our class is already very creative but on thing we can enhance is taking initiative. Our class has some very cool ideas but we aren't brave enough to be a leader and take action by actually using those wonderful ideas.

  11. Do you feel creative?

Personally I do feel creative when ever I do most things, for example making a story, photography, making a model,or drawing.I do feel like a creative person, and I find that fun, and also I find it interesting. With that said, in some subject I don’t feel creative, like math, while math is not a big challenge for me,I still get bored, and don't feel creative, but that does not take away from the other things I do feel creative in.There are many things that school allowed me to try,and see weather I enjoy it or not.I believe schools are starting to allow more people to be creative, with giving importance to other subjects, like dance, art ,or music. So I do feel creative.
A suggestion for more creativity that I have is making periods for different things like Art, or Technology, and more , and people who are interested in one of those subjects, could do what they want, so they can feel creative.

    5. We do need more tech, but it might take too much money, maybe we could have more devices,or learning how to code, maybe building , and repairing computers, or other devices. Students who have a lot of tech could also bring in some.I think that technology could be a fun subject for me, and some of my other classmates.

  12. creativity,we all have some way of creativity in fact they all don't have to part of art we can be creative towards nature but creativity should be a more open towards school and we should also have more time to also have creativity in school, we can be creative by doing fun activities. They don't have to be based on art it can be represented at science, math or even geogerapy. So and to be honest we should have more art periods so that we can show how creative we can be with our minds.

  13. In my opinion I'm very creative in many things even at home when I'm bored sometimes I always try to be creative by using different subjects including art. From scale 1-10 when it comes to drawing activities, construction building I'm probably 7 or 8 but when it comes to physical activities I'm probably 9.

schools freedom and environment to be creative doesn't help at all.Because when your in kindergarten or grade 3 in class you do creative stuff and lots of arts and when you reach grade 4 or 5 you is when you be starting doing creative stuff but as you get older which means your going to be in grade 6 or higher you may lose some creativity because your going to be focused on your work. But I'm not saying this happens to everyone because some people who tend to have their career as an artist, engineer designer, inventor or even a scientist they expect to be more creative than other people. When you have a job that relates to lots of arts and designing then you need a valuable creativity to make the design look good.

  14. Creativity; Do schools help or hurt students creativity?

I feel creative in my own way much like other students. I may not be good in art but I have my own way of being creative and pulling through a challenge of painting or drawing. I may not be good in music vocally but I make up for it by learning how to read notes and composing small songs using my knowledge. Creativity doesn't always have to be things such as: music, art, dance or writing. Creativity can be: math, science or even geography and history. Everyone would have their own creative thoughts when it comes to projects or assigned questions from any of those subjects. Most of our classes in this school give us a lot of free creativity. Science for example, gives us a task and we on our own have to come up with 2 or 3 ways to present that task to our class that's informational and entertaining. I would add more tasks such as what we did for Rebound when we had to create a skit or find some type of way to showcase what went on in the last few chapters we had read. I feel that it was a quick and simple task and many of my peers had fun with it.

  15. Do Schools Kill Creativity?
    Response

Do i feel creative? Yes i feel very creative as in my opinion i use the resources around me the best i can, by finding more than one way to use them. I also fuse my ideas together which is a very clever way to express creativity,All though i feel creative i don't feel creative in certain subjects like french,As its very hard to understand some words.

Schools needs to give u more freedom, to demonstrate your creativity.
I don't feel like creativity is really worried about in school as teachers focus more on other subjects rather than Art.In my opinion creativity could boost confidence which would lead to better work.

Is there any suggestion u would like to make?

Yes,I feel like schools should input more resources such as pencil crayons or art items that certain students may not have or need. In my opinion art should be focused on more as it could be used in the future for many things, also may benefit some students more.Different technology items such as a Graphic tablet,Airbrush and etc.

  16. Do schools help or hurt students creativity?

Teachers feels that teaching their students to be creative will disrupt their learning, by distracting them or even thinking that creativity disrupts their focus and their knowledge as well. However, some teachers believe that creativity can be nurtured by technology!Students are extremely distracted by technology, we use it in our everyday lives! Some students may not even listen to their teachers instructions by using the technology that is provided for them.Schools should at least be a little more creative by having a bit more creative environment, schools should provide students with more time for the things that they need to do!One example, is that you can make your own classroom more creative, by putting some pictures, quotes, and evan more decorations in your classroom to inspire the students creativity! One suggestion, is that you can have some periods in your class to do some creativity, like photography and drawing.

Although, I believe that I am not that creative as I used to be in grade 5.Since I am in grade 8, i won’t have any time to work on my creativity! This is because I will have more stress than any other grade in middle school, I will have to apply for high school, and get ready for grade 9.Although, that could change if our school can have more creative time.

    1. I disagree with you saying that in grade 8 you get to no time to be creative at school. In every subject that you do you get a chance to show creativity in some way or another. You don't just show creativity in art.

    2. I agree with Rasheed. There doesn't have to be a specific way to show creativity. You can make the most simple things exceed expectations.

  17. Creativity is defined as the use of imagination and originality. I believe creativity also means thinking outside the box; thinking laterally instead of analytically. I believe I am creative in some ways. In my opinion, creativity is not only limited to the arts, but can be anything applied in our daily lives. It also has to do with problem solving. Instead of trying to find a way over a wall, someone who thinks laterally would go around it. I believe our class is given several opportunities to be creative. Our science can be presented in several different ways, using technology or visuals like models. When we create posters for math, or even our homework assignments, we have the freedom to organize and present our work however we want.

I believe we have several opportunities to show how creative we are in class, but maybe there can be more openness towards the small details.

  18. Personally, I think that I’m not that creative. I believe that I don't have a very creative mind. To be honest, I think art is the most boring subject that school teaches. I mean the photo assignment that we are doing right now is not that bad, it’s not fun but it’s not boring either. Even though creativity isn’t always art and can being outside of the box or thinking out of the ordinary, it can be anything we use in our lives, literally anything. I think the school does let us be very creative for example, when we had the terry fox poster competition we had the chance to be very creative, the photo assignment that we have right now allows us to be creative, shazam also gave us a chance to be creative. In my opinion, I think our school definitely gives us a chance to be incredibly creative. Therefore I don't have any suggestions to how our class can allow more creativity because I already think there's a lot of it. I think we just don't use these opportunities wisely for example, not many people from our class did the terry fox poster competition, that was a opportunity for us to be creative but we didn’t take it

  19. I think that I am more creative in art, dance, photography. When it comes to these kinds of stuff there is no right and wrong. The mistakes you make are creative mistakes. I don't think that I can be creative only in art and photography. I can be creative in math problems we can just write the answers but instead, we can show our work. how we got the answer. I can also be creative in language by writing creative words and making my handwriting creative but I know that I can be more creative in art and photography. Mr. Cheney is every different teacher in a good way. He is the first teacher to teach photography and. Other people thinks that school is always about math, language.its not. its about having fun doing different things and Mr Cheney is always trying to make every subject fun. Like playing a game related to math like HEADS UP.

I think our school needs to give the students more freedom. I think that our character trade assemblies need to be creative because we do the same things every time. I also think that we need more music periods because we don't have music periods at all, and I think we should have less time when we are doing a group project because we talk more and work less.

  20. I think i am creative but to an extent; at moments the task i am doing is very fun and im very engaged with the task but then sometimes my brain doesn't want to process any ideas for the task. In my opinion the school has the environment to be creative but it has to be ¨right” for example if we have a project due for french and we complete and hand it in the teacher will have a look at it and pass a comment ( which is her job) but sometimes the teacher says u didnt do this right and etc, which is what i think makes a child's creativity die down, if the have no motivation from the start then later on in life it is harder for them to bring back the creativity; in my opinion this the freedom the school gives for creativity. In our own class i think Mr.Cheney gives us our own space to explore and he motivates us to continue to be creative. Our class does not need to boost anything up in terms of creativity because Mr.Cheney already allows us to be creative to the full extent now after that it depends on us if we wanna use this privilege to the fullest extent.
