ReplyDeleteThe article Dos and Don’ts of Classroom Decorations In summary is an article that explain the dos and don'ts for your classroom stating that too many decorations, posters ,displays, etc can be very distracting for many students. And supporting it with the test that wear ran on 64 students by Pedro Rodrigues and Josefa Pandeirada all from different age groups from 8 to 12 wear put in different classrooms. One with lots of decoration and posters and another that was plane and simple. While there in the classrooms they did a series of test to see the different attention spans that the different students had in each class and it turned out the one in the plane class did a lot better. Proving that to may things in a lass o]is distracting for students.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of things i would like to see im my home room i don't really see any that i like that aren't already in our class because we already put up students work and have a good amount of natural and unnatural light sources.
I agree with you but I also think that we should have 1 or 2 diagrams up on our walls.
DeletePlease update your user name so i know who is posting . Thanks
DeleteI agree but should we also try this our self?
DeleteI agree but I think if we had diagrams or some sort of aid to enhance our learning it would be nice
DeleteI agree but if we have some diagrams and text about class work I would be useful for the students and they won't ignore the teacher
Delete1. Write a summary of the article and highlight one thing you read that you would like to incorporate into our classroom.
ReplyDeleteResponse:This Article is based on how various classroom wall items, could distract kids from their lucubrate, which could also make them lose initiative. Which would result in them losing focus numerous true out class, walls design could lead children into a whole new direction. This has been proven as year olds and 12 year olds were divided into two groups. The higher age group got more pictures and the lower grade group got less pictures, results came out different .All though teachers have good intentions while doing this,The learning gains rather distract than help.
One thing i liked about this article is that it demonstrates how certain items could distract students, all though its look to as good intentions.
We should limit the distractions ...
DeleteI agree that the intentions for high decorations is good, but the outcome is not.I also think we should limit distractions. You did not talk about our classroom and what we should do.
DeleteA new study has found that too many visuals can have a negative impact on students memory and attention skills. The study was conducted by Pedro Rodrigues and Josefa Pandeirada, they chose 64 students ranging in age of 8-12 to perform attention and memory tasks in 2 separate groups. One group was in a highly decorated room and the others were in a room with bare walls. The students did many tasks to test their memory and attention span. The students in the highly visual room got lower marks than all of the students in the bare wall room. This has shown that more visuals has a negative rather than positive impact on students.
ReplyDeleteI think that we should add more visual aids like anchor charts and diagrams. I feel like it would help us remember certain formulas better because we will always be looking at it and reading it.
Yes some more math posters and questions posted highlighting formulas etc would be helpful
DeleteI agree. They would be a great way to study because we will be so used to seeing it, that we memorize what it says.
DeleteI agree. They would be a great way to study because we will be so used to seeing it, that we memorize what it says.
DeleteWe need to design a math space / math wall
Deletethis should be project 2 on our space reconstruction
I agree because this is another way to study for quizzes, test etc.
DeleteI also strongly agree because I feel like this can be a great way to study and actually get different concepts in our heads
DeleteAgreed, this would make it easier for us to solve a math problem we might have
DeleteI agree that the work would be easier to solve for the kids
DeleteThe article given to us tells us about the do’s and don’ts of classroom decorations. Most rooms that have a lot of unnecessary artwork on the walls would distract students. This was proven in a test created by Pedro Rodrigues and Josefa Pandeirada, by dividing 64 8-12 year olds into 2 equal groups. They also explain how we need natural sunlight because it would help us perform on a higher level then we usually do. In a classroom teachers should never cover more than 80% of the wall space.
ReplyDeleteI really think that adding more quotes, diagrams and that kind of stuff related to the school work we are going to do for the rest of the year would help. We would be able to prepare for what we are going to learn next.
I agree. Our classroom should have more visual aids that relate to what we are currently learning about.
Deletegreat comments ... the quotes idea is something we should begin right away
DeleteI think you are right. It will be a great way to get some inspiration
DeleteInspirational quotes wall will be the first thing we make new for our walls and class design
DeleteI also agree with this because quotes would also help enhance our class and help us learn too.
DeleteI agree with this because, if we have quotes we will be inspired everyday; there can be a new quote everyday, each quote can be related to a different topic.
DeleteThe article describes the do’s and don’ts of classroom decoration. While visual aids and displayed work can be helpful and engaging, if the room is densely decorated, it will do just the opposite and be distracting. A recent study conducted by psychologists Pedro Rodrigues and Josefa Pandeirada showed that after 64 students between the ages of 8 and 12 were split into two different groups, one group with a heavily decorated classroom, and the other with blank walls, the latter group performed better on cognitive tests. This showed that having a high number of visual stimuli in the room can be a distraction. Despite this, there should be a limited number of displays in classrooms.
ReplyDeleteI believe our class should have more organised displays, with only certain areas portraying visual aids and classwork, and others being blank.
I do agree that the visual aids in our classroom should be a little more organized
Deleteagreed ... lets redesign and organize our walls
DeleteDefinitely. Our class is a tad bit messy
DeleteIm not sure its messy... it could use a freshening up!
Deletemessy is things falling off and things crocked on the walls
I agree we can organize all the previous students display.
DeleteAccording to Rodrigues and Pandeirada, too much visually appealing decoration in class can have a negative impact on
ReplyDeletethe students learning. To prove their point they decided to perform a test about attention and memory with 64 8-12 year olds. In one of the tests, the students had to observe a laptop screen and if an X appeared, they were to press a button but if a K appeared they were to do nothing. The students were given each two tests for memory and two for attention. The study showed that the kids in the decorated room did worse than in the kids in the bare room. So, they proved that decoration in class room could be very distracting.
In my viewpoint, I think that our classroom needs to feature inspiring role models because we don't have much work from other people outside of our class to inspire us. Only our own work which won't push us to try and do something amazing just like our role models.
I agree. Featuring items about role models can even help us set our own goals
DeleteI agree that this would really help us push ourselves to become better
Deletequotes and role models is certainly the first thing we should do to enhance our space
ReplyDeleteThis article was about a new study that with a lot of decorations on the wall would have a negative impact on students learning. As Rodrigues and Pandeirada conduced an experiment with 64 students with ages 8-12 years old. With multiple test the one with more decorations on the wall got lower marks than the one with bare walls. One of the experiments was with a laptop, if a x appeared they were doing something and if k appeared they were doing nothing. The test were 2 memory test and 2 attention test.
ReplyDeleteIn my view, I think we should we should decorate our class with quotes and formula and a math wall to motivate us and help us if we need it. This is what I think about the article and what we should do to our class.
I agree because I think this would urge us to do better
DeleteI agree but in my opinion i don't see why we would need quotes in our classroom, other than that I completely agree with what you are saying
DeleteAditya, I think we should use the quotes because if we don’t believe in our self.
DeleteThanks Avinoor but the thing is if we do that, we would have to make it organized
DeleteIn my opinion I think we should have more related stuff for work
DeleteThat's true like what aditya said like we should have a whole math wall in general
Deletei agree,i also believe that your idea of quotes can help us strive to become better.
DeleteI love the quotes idea ... we are going to do this for sure
DeleteI agree with putting a math wall so it can help when we have a test or assignment
DeleteThis article tells us the do’s and don’ts of classroom decoration. A study has been found on how too many visuals can interfere with their attention skills and memory. This study was done by Pedro Rodrigues and Josefa Pandeirada, they gathered 64 kids in the 8-12 year old range and divided them into two groups. One group went to a classroom that had high decoration walls and the group went to a class that had blank walls. They all did tasks that tested their attention and memory. The group that did all the tests in the high decorative room got worse results than the group who did the same tests in the room with no decoration. This study shows that too much visual stimuli can be a distraction.
ReplyDeleteI think that we should dedicate specific walls to specific subjects, for example the back wall can have math diagrams and just have a big math wall in general. And for one of the side walls we can put english related diagrams and have a english wall. I feel like if we had these things in our classroom it would help our learning experience and prepare us for tests, quizzes, projects, etc. But at the same time I wouldn’t want to over do it because then it would just be a distraction.
I agree with that too many visuals can distract people, and about the math diagrams, or subject decorations, but I also think there can be some unrelated things to make the class more fun kind of like Mr Cheney´s star wars collection.
Deletei agree, because when we have other teachers from TDSB come to our classroom it presents our classroom in a very neat way.
Deletethe Star Wars and little extra things are trying to bring the class to life! a place to let your personality shine through ... is it a distraction more then creating a warm and engaging space ... that can be debated
DeleteThe article do's and dont's tells us about how decoration can affect kids learning in a very bad way that kids can't succeed in their learning. An experiment got created by Pedro Rodrigues and Josefa Pandeirada that all from different age groups from 8 to 12 got divided into two grips and one room was a decorated and the other room was not. In the end it tells them that the most decorated ro was failing ir did the worst on their test and the room without and decoration got the best marks. So proves that kids can't focus on their work.
ReplyDeleteIn the text it didn't explain that what kid of decoration was it. Was it like halloween decoration or class-work related. If it is un related decorations in class that islt is reasonable that they would be distracted. If it is math decoration then we should make it less and it should be how you do the certain task. But Overall I belive that to much of decoration distracts kids learning.
Dos and Don’ts of classroom decoration
DeleteAfter reading the given article of the dos and don'ts of classroom decorations I saw how a classroom with a lot of decorations, or designs could distract kids ,and that would end up making them perform worse. Pedro Rodrigues, and Josefa Pandeirada are two psychologists who did an experiment with 64 students from ages 8-12 and they were in 2 different groups, 1 where they had nothing on the walls, and the other had many things, from a wide selection of categories. They were given a few tests, and activities, like Simon Says. Overall the kids in the high decoration room performed worse than the kids without it.Of course I think every room should not be bare and have some decoration, but not too much, since it does not look good, and it distracts the kids.
I don’t really think we need anything in our classroom, personally I do not pay attention to the walls, as much as my work, but some people might disagree with me.That is my summary of this article, and anything I would like in our own classroom.
Sarvesh
I agree with the statement that too many classroom decorations can cause a distraction for children, and I agree with the less decoration, but still some. You did not really talk about our own classroom though.

DeleteI agree with the fact that things that aren't education related can be a distraction and shouldn't be in the class

yes sarvesh i personally i do not look at the wall as much as my work. people who look at the walls they don't understand anything or they got nothing to do and distract other people
DeleteThank you Barunjit, I also agree with your statement that people who only pay attention to the classroom decorations, don't pay attention to school work, and they also probably distract others as well.
Deletei disagree, i personally believe that decorations/ visual aids can help students during tests or everyday activities.
Deletewe can have some debate here...
DeleteJulius, I do agree think that decorations are a good thing, but too many is a problem in my opinion.
DeleteOf course there would a cap of how many decorations there should be. There can be too much of anything but i think that we should try to get as close as possible to that cap.
DeleteThe article " Do's and Don'ts of Classroom Decorations" explains a study which examine the relationship between classroom environment and students, this task is examined through memory, attention and self-regulation.Pedro Rodrigues and Josefa Pandeirada recruited 64 children between 8 and 12 yrs old to perform attention and memory tasks in groups. One room had all their walls with images and decoration pieces while the other room's walls were bare. The performed tests on the children and the room with bare walls had a higher score of right answers then the room with images in their walls. So this study proves that a lot of decoration in the classroom can be a distraction to the kids and can affect their learning skills.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion I think that our class has nothing really to change, because everything that is on the walls corporates thing education related. It might not look like that to other teachers but the way of style mr.Cheney has of teaching incorporates everything around us weather it be art or math. One thing might be getting rid of mr.Lippa's wall because nobody uses it and its just taking up space; instead we could use it for a photography section or something that we don't do often but is consider learning. Maybe a couple of reminders of english grammar or even math formulas.
I agree
Deletephoto wall is a great idea ... i have lots of pictures being developed already
Delete.
ReplyDeleteThe dos and don'ts of a classroom are very intreving. But in my opinion i don't pay attention to the walls in classrooms because i just go to get a education. Certain times we may admire the walls but in my opinion it's not too much of a distraction because i'm in a classroom with a lot of things on the wall and i can work just fine.
ReplyDeleteis classroom design important?
Deletewell this topic can be true but i don't find the wall attractive or i don't pay attention to the walls because i didn't even think about them as an attractive sources to look at, maybe because some student don't know how to the work so the try to find a way to waste time, which is a choice to look at the walls or they just don't want to do the work.but overall i don't find the walls as an distraction
ReplyDeletedo you find the walls a benefit or engaging?

ReplyDeleteDos and don’ts of classroom decorations
ReplyDeleteThe article that we read portrayed that classroom decorations can distract rather than help students. Although the creator of the article stated that they came to this conclusion by testing the students themselves, I, myself believe that classroom decorations such as: Math formulas, art , etc. can prove very useful during tests and everyday school tasks. I also believe that we would be doing students justice if we incorporated even more visual aids into our classroom. In conclusion: regardless of the fact that studies show that decorations can distract students, I respectfully disagree.
-Julius
Why do you disagree? what examples do you have to support your position? its great to challenge but back it up with reasons
Deletei based my response off of personal experiences.
Deletewhen i was younger i would often find myself lost during a quiz, i would also find myself searching around my class for visual aids for the subject, they would almost always help me.

DeleteThe article: "Dos and Don'ts of Classroom Decoration" talked about a new study that psychologists Pedro Rodrigues and Josefa Pandeirada had started researching. According to the psychologists heavily decorated can sidetrack students and interfere with their focus and learning abilities. Reading this article I agree with this new found study. I agree because when classrooms have quotes and pictures all over the walls, I feel like I'm more attracted to all the colours and words than I am sitting down and listening to a lesson being taught.
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing I'd really like to add or see in our classroom as I feel like everything is fine how it is set up. It's not too distracting and not too entertaining either plus, with the interactive and group work lessons we have that keep us engaged I don't really focus on the walls in our room.
You seem focused on the content of the assignments more then the celebration of displaying it. Nothing wrong with that at all - immerse yourself in the work
DeleteYes indeed. Instead of having my work displayed on our class walls, I like to see words or pictures that are involved or referencing to the assignments given rather than something I did. I feel as if it would stress me out instead of motivating me because I would ponder how my groupmate(s) got their answer and worry if I did it right or not.
Deletethat makes sense but, I think that if you see your work compared to others it will give you ideas and help you to do better next time.

ReplyDeleteSo what would you include in our classroom? any suggestions?
DeleteThe classroom do’s and don’ts
ReplyDeleteWith the experience I’ve personally had as being a student the classroom decoration is a big hit or miss. When making your student feel welcome in sharing,as well as producing high quality work.
The reason being snugly, comfort the feel of some where like home because school is like your home away from home . You spend a lot of time here especially in your classrooms so the space where you work, play, laugh, learn should be open and inclusive for all students. Some teachers fail to realize the fact that some students low quality work comes from discomfort physically and mentally. Which is then caused by the low concern of student work value , (showing of the work) even if a student dose not do well. the work should still be awarded for the effort, art or even the writing but some kind of praise then a simple “but you could also improve on ...” so that the student dose leave with a negative attitude towards there work . The comfort of the class we’ll see to how open your student will be if it's a high comfort ,( open space chairs *beside the desk chairs or a chill zone ) your students will more likely to be open with you.If it’s low comfort your students will be more exclusive more kept to themselves , so in my personal opinion it’s good to have a highly decorated classroom.
a chill zone ... i think our class has a variety of comfy seating
DeleteI really agree with decorations being a big hit or miss. Nice intro.
DeleteRodrigues and Pandeirada did an experiment by recruiting 64 kids age from 8-12 they were split into two groups and one of the room had was clear and the other room had lots of decorations and they conducted this experiment to see how will it affect children's learning. They did a few tests, activities and games like simon says. And also the study have shown that too much decorations distracts kids easily from paying attention in class or works to do.
ReplyDeleteI think having too much decoration can easily attract someone's attention easily but having some decorations in our room will be good because learning and creativity improves by having decorations around you.But having a white walls and almost no decorations in a room will make students be bored in a class having an empty mind or even falling asleep. And I would say having pictures of our favorite things, diagrams, toys, and even attractive quotes will do good to.
I agree that we should limit amount of decorations and that with having wall with no decorations could be boring but I don’t think we would be empty minded or falling asleep cause we would be doing work and filling our mind with learning
Deletethe article dos and don'ts of classrooms decoration can influence kids on there learning. To examine the relationship between classroom environments and students' pedro rodrigues and Joseph Pandreida recruited 64 children between 8 to 12 years old to perform attention and memory task. Children in high decoration rooms performed worse than on all test, which means too much visual stimulus can be a distraction. so what i think is that kids in schools should not be in classrooms with too much decorations that can distract there learning.
ReplyDeletedo you have any opinions about our classroom?
DeleteI would beg to differ I think the more a child is exposed to decorations and the comfort of (home) the better work they will execute speaking for my own experiences
DeleteDO’S AND DON'TS OF A CLASSROOM I in this article I learned how a student can learn and focus on their studies. One thing that I learned is that if the classroom is to much decorated with posters and stuff it will interfere with the student or students memory and ability to focus on one task. Some other things are that what the researchers should say to the teachers is that they should display student work, they should feature inspiring role models, avoid clutter, let in natural light and balance wall colours. But i think that it’s alright to have some decoration but not alot to take away the students focus.
ReplyDeleteany changes you would suggest for our class?
DeleteI think our class should have an class Instagram board of cool photos of our class so every event our class has pictures or Maybe even one for our school
Deletetest
ReplyDeleteTeachers always have good intentions when it comes to their students, but when it comes to too many decorations in the class room they are doing more harm than help to their students. Thanks to psychologists Pedro Rodrigues and Josefa Pandeirada we know that sensory-rich classrooms could, hinder the memory and focus of students. These psychologists performed an experiment with 64 children 8-12 years old. So basically one group of students were put into a sensory-rich room and the other into a room with nothing on the walls. Both groups performed a series of task. The group in the room with nothing on the walls outdid the other group and proved that sensory-rich classroom hinder the focus and memory of students.
ReplyDeleteI don’t think that our class is sensory-rich or that we need to change anything all of our work is not in places that make me feel crowded or distracted. All of the work or things that help us are nicely spread out such as the books. Also the Star Wars and baseball decorations I think give us a nice a little bit of a break from the work that we do in class.
the dos and don'ts of class classroom decorations. a latest study showed that most students don't work well in highly decorated classrooms rodigies and pandireida recurited 64 students ages 8 and 12 to perform attention and memory and how they are focused with theRe learning. they riconiged that when the students are placed in a highly decorated classroom they were not focused becaues they were destracted by all the decoration and there grades went down as well as there memory in learning, but the class with no decorations students were very focused and there grades were high.so i thnk there are pros and cons of both decorated and not decorated classes.
ReplyDeleteNow let’s discuss about our classroom, we do have a lot of decorations in the classroom but it doesn’t limit my learning and i don’t really pay attention to it it actually makes me feel comfortable in my learning environment. Anyways i don’t think our class needs anymore decorations cause it’s fine how it is but we could use some math examples on the back wall so it can get us prepared for a test or assignment.
