Rebound - THE END

Rebound - THE END

Rate the book from 1 - 5 and explain why you give the book this rating!

1 being lame like my star wars tee shirts and 5 being awesome like your math video's!

Consider things like characters, emotions, engagement, and realism.

Once you have made your statement being dialogue with 2 other students and ask questions about their post.  Asking how they felt about characters and the final conclusion of the story.

Finding students that have different ratings will be a good place to get dialogue flowing.

  1. i would have definitely give this book a 5
i gave the book this rating because of the story it had with comedy came sadness with sadness came anger a roller coaster of a gr. 8 life but a little different just because of a wheelchair

the realism towards this story is fantastic because it open our naive eyes towards the real world and give s a moral where no one will forget

    1. Does David have all the rights to be mad, angry, vicious to the people who come near him as Sean said? Why? Explain.

      Delete
    2. it depends what they do to him if they touch the chair then of course he can because he is fed up with all this

      Delete
    3. im taking about anytime when he is moody.

      Delete
    4. usually when he is moody it is because of his wheelchair so of course he still has the right

      Delete
    5. so youre saying he has the rights to get mad at everybody that associates with him. How could that be , he could just accept that he is going to be in this wheel chair for a long time.

      Delete
    6. if there is no hope or dream of life then why live if you are saying that david should just give up he will live life with with no meaning

      Delete
    7. well actually David just made a loop hoel in his life, He is getting his worth still ,even if hes in a wheelchair

      Delete
    8. hold up, I did not say that David should give up. You put words in my mouth. He should accept that he is in a wheel chair and still hope for a day for him to walk. At one point David was not worrying about his present but he was expecting the future outcome.

      Delete
    9. "he could just accept that he is going to be in this wheel chair for a long time." that is what you said

    10. What part of the book you like the most?

      Delete
    11. Well rememeber his mother doesent belive in David so it's hard to see what he gain in the wheel chair. It's hard to belive when no one belive in you only Sean did and that's why there best friends.

      Delete
    12. good job derrick you are right you cannot tell someone to ruin their hopes and that is what you are doing right now abeeshan

      Delete
    13. Actually his mom does beleive David could do it, But she fears that David will waste most of his life on his goal which has a possibility of not being acheievd.

    14. What do think is the moral of the story?

      Delete
    15. As Sarah said "he didn't say he gave up on walking again he just said he'd cool down with the thought, and face reality as it is right now."

      Delete
    16. and even though you are TRYING to ruin davids hope he is not going to fall for it if he disagrees with his parents why would he agree with you

      Delete
    17. my favorite part of the book was all the times when sean was talking about basketball or playing it

      Delete
    18. @aqib wow why are you going against abeeshan. I think abeeshan is just stating a fact, but it does sound like hes going against

      Delete
    19. so you are saying you want to build his confidence and crash it even more once he really knows that he wont walk again?

      Delete
    20. Well... when you guys put it in a way, wouldn't it just be that he is still living because, of his hopes? He was about to Suicide but stopped, because he had that little hope to do so. If not, if he was out of hope, and he "can't" in his life, than he would harshly kill himself being disappointing and not seeing any worth in his self.
You all are correct since, David doesn't give up and as Abeeshan, said he should learn to accept his position. Which, I do believe happened in the story due to the symbolism, of him accepting that he may be in a wheel chair for a while so it doesn't mean he stops playing basketball, but to find another way to play it. So basically, he doesn't give up and he does accept in the end.

      Delete
    21. actually it was because sean went to get david and he stopped also then if he had hope why do you want to deprive david of that abeeshan ??

      Delete
    22. Very true Aqib, but the few lasting times that kept him up sitting there staring, was his hope balancing it's way out. Or else he would long before Sean came, fling himself out. His hopes were running, and of course I agree with you, Sean came and stopped him increasing his hope.

    7. Well i would give this book 5 because ever thing came in nicely. The author made the character really realistic like if they were people we might know from our life or see.I really like enjoy how the author cleared our vision and see life from other people shoes.Like David and his wheelchair and how it feels like to be cripple.I really like how she described the character mood and how they talk. She made it look like a real conversation ever time the character talk. All in all i love this book and what it teaches us.

      Opinion

The thing we don't think about is that were only seeing from two perspective in the world right? There might be kid's in worse situation that David.Like kid's how get force to work and people how can't get food. This book gave us only two perspective being a teen in a ruff situation and being in a wheel chair but there are so many thing we don't see that are all around the world. This is why i think they make book to give a message for it to help us in life

      Delete
    8. What are some other examples that can breath into the plot from the outside world (not just the media telling us they're starving, help them).
I think just like suicide an extreme topic, you can't see who would be more susceptible to that extent. Poverty is widely known to be a grave problem (it is) but, there are other outside sources that show what happens. For example; sexual violence in certain regions, animal cruelty, man slaughter, hit-men killing people. All these things are minimalized for the people to see trough the media and what it sells to us. People are convoluted, and they do want their money.
Just like the media this book is put in a way for people to see that he's is in a wheelchair, he is different. But that isn't the best scene.
Like KONY 2012 they have the same concept of thinking, in a minimalized way.

      Delete
    9. Well that can be anything like losing job, not having money being in a situation were you feel hopeless or even injury. We don't see thing as they other people see it in any ruff situation.(p.s i use media information because it was the first thing that came to me)

      Delete
    10. Derrick, the comment that you wrote above is very true. I fully agree with you! However, you said that the author had written very well and put realism in the character by making them seem real and imaginative. "The author made the character really realistic like if they were people we might know from our life or see."
Don't get me wrong, the author Eric Walter is an amazing author! Although he is a good author, isn't you yourself who created the imagination and the realism? I mean we barely knew how Nick, Gavin, Caroline, the guy in the car waiting behind David in the Wendy's and a few more characters looked. The author wasn't the one to describe the character, it was you who had imagined it, like building the characters; Building your imagination. So you may say that the author well explained the story, but it is actually that he left parts off for us to explain it to ourselves!
      - you made the characters realistic according to your passion and interest for the story.

      Delete
    11. As you said in your response, the author brought out realism but how was he able to do that? You really need to step into someones shoes in order to do that. Do you think the author was in a wheel chair once, did he interview someone that is in a wheel chair or do you think hes just an overall great writer so he made these feelings that are true up ? What are your thoughts?

      Delete
    12. Aniqa, i totally agree with what you are trying to say but we build the characters for Nick Gavin and a few other people but they werent the main characters they were only there for a few parts then they left.We build out imagination up it didnt really effect the moral or the main characters. Do you understand what im trying to say?Heres an example :
we say Nick may be another tough person like Scott. Later in the book how does thinking Nick is tough effect? Not really right.

      Delete
    13. I thought this book would've talked more about nick and gavin close to the end. I say this because I thought they would beat up david because he took their friend away.

      Delete
  3. I would rate the book a 4 out of 5.
Probably because of what they use as the example as "different" Eric Walters uses. I don't know it's just a different opinion of who he picks and what they are.The book was surprising though, it's the story that got to me. It was emotional, funny. I like the way he captured the views like that, alchohol for Scott, skip to Sean and David's project.

The skips he makes is what makes you want to predict what happens next, it's what makes you a better reader.
The overall thinking for this book is beautiful. David wanting to pummel the wheelchair down and everything.

    5. To see trough the given moral or such. The givwen moral isn't just handed to us, we have to retreive it. It's like the gift unpresedented, the moral is given to people that are in the zone . To retreive the moral is only acheived by being a better reader. That is acheived by predicting in a effective way for eg. visualization, dialouge

      Delete
    6. @ Aqib I would maybe go with a example of cerebral epalsy (Brain disorder that causes you not to be able to move certain parts of your body willingly). Maybe a recovery of the disorder? I dont know?

      Delete
    7. @ Abeeshan The multiple personality thing he does. Like Sean really thinks one thing but answers with the other. It gives the depth of mind that actually happens to others. A aroma that's not escapable seeps into the mind.

      Delete
    8. If you like everything in the book then why did you rate it as a 4 why not 5.??

      Delete
    9. @Derrick The story is all so different from other stories. We almost get every prediction wrong because we think so single minded. The hints are tthere but they can lead to anything in the story!

      Delete
    10. Well it's not a perfect book right. You can't define a book because ever one has a right to have an opinion you may say it's really good but it's not you're favorite right

      Delete
    11. @ Tushar: what do you think is moral of the story?

      Delete
    12. @Sana because of the character choice, it's so single-minded that you just suddenly know what might happen, but doesnt happen.

      Delete
    13. Tushar, like Sana asked, what is the lack of this book that caused you to put a "4" instead or "5" ?
I mean, you did answer the question but, can you clarify it? I mean, the characters are well chosen, and we are to blame for to be single minded and learned to be open minded, and what we expect doesn't happen which catches us off guard, making this book different. Our predictions always being correct isn't the best possible choice, since we choose the obvious and not the other actual possible answers that are available.
So why is it that you give the book this rating?

      Delete
    14. @Tushar: I am not very clear with your choice. I am pretty sure you find many narratives that have characters in a wheelchair or other handicap people. Even if they would, almost all of them probably never focus on them or even talk about them.

Also, the author does the unexpected by first showing David and Sean as big, strong students and then suddenly they are both alone and crying to each other.

      Delete
    15. What I am trying to say is, why is it that you gave this book a 4 out of 5?

      Delete
    16. @Aniqa and Harman, the 4 out of 5 is based on a opinion that is based on alot of different factors.
The way Cheney read it, was amazing! The only exception is that the author focuses on a very simple example of "different" for most of the time. I don't know?It bugs me, that such a great book had to be focused on such a icon that everyone's heard of.
I've heard of a wheelchair example in so many novels, narratives. Harman, the thing that is great about other novels that include a phenomenal "icon" that they don't allow to show up to much too often are the author's that did it right. The idea of a wheelchair guy that's emotionally unstable is such a bore, unlike Cheney's t-shirts though.
I just don't find a wheelchair guy all that interesting.

  5. I would definitely give this book a 5+. This is due to the fact that the book had different types of scenes with different types of perspectives and emotions. It wasn't just a simple rise to the climax, there was more to that! The actual story itself was pretty interesting. This is because I never knew so much about the life of a teenager in a wheel chair.

It was a roller coaster! Also, it had a lot of realism. David eventually couldn't handle the obstacle and in result, he attempted suicide. I like the fact that the author made Scott as a side character and how David was a moody/complex guy. This was really engaging because the characters had some similarities comparing to us. A huge factor would be that we're all in Grade 8 thus, we have a better understanding of the characters.

This book enlightens us with the feeling of a kid in a wheel chair. However, the wheel chair is symbolic of a person/something that is "different". Different can mean: race, size, gender, sexual orientation, perspective, religion etc. In addition, this books make me understand that you cant have your hopes up high all the time, and you have to accept and move on. Finally, the book Rebound taught me that the characters also symbolize us. WE ARE THE CHARACTERS.

I was also really engaged because of the appealing way Mr.Cheney read the book. He read with astonishing emotion. Also, we did a lot of reading comprehension tasks: drama skit, visualization, pyramid etc. This made us understand the characters more therefore we became a more engaged reader:) If I read that book it would of been just reading the book without comprehending and using reading strategies: imagination, what are they thinking right now, predicting etc. I would of never knew the power of narrative if it wasnt for Mr.Cheney. In conclusion, I thank Mr.Cheney for reading and teaching me everything he knows about this book:)

    1. Abeeshan, that is a great explanation of your writing up there! I agree with you very much. I would like to ask you, have you noticed, that we talk about how David feels and his problems, however this story is a point of view from Sean? Would the book be better if it was directly from the point of view of David?

      Delete
    2. Absolutely not, this is because the author made the book so that we can understand what "different" means. If this was from David's perspective only a wheel chair kid would mostly understand and appreciate this book.

We are looking and comprehending "different" by looking and socializing with David, not being/living like him. That's why the book should only stay from Sean's perspective as if we are learning what he is learning from David. This is simply because we are "normal" like Sean. This is why I appreciate Eric Walter's writing/book!

      Delete
    3. Do you think it would've been better if the story was around Sean a little more?

      Delete
  6. I would rate rebound a 4/5 because I think that the author had a unique idea. The story did not end with David getting out of the wheelchair. We usually think that at the end of the book it will end with a happily ever after. But, no this story did not end like that. It was unexpected. What we thought would happen did not happen because reading other books, they almost all end with a happy ever after. This author gave a twist to usual books that you read.

    2. There still was kind of a happy ending. David was playing basketball and drawing again! He went to go talk to someone about his problems and got to talk to people just like him. And he didn't say he gave up on walking again he just said he'd cool down with the thought, and face reality as it is right now.

@Sarah Yeah, but you when you first read the book wouldnt you think that it was going to end with him getting out of the wheelchar? You wouldnt really think that he leaves his passion for basketball or his passion for drawing, just becuase he is in a wheelchair.
@Abeeshan Well, if I read the book my self I wouldn't have read it with so much passion and emotion that Mr.Cheney reads with. I think that Mr.Cheney makes the reader more engaged. Like he will do various things to keep us into the book (read in diffrent tones, lower and raise his voice according to situation.)

    7. @Sana Nobody said that he got out of the chair and started to walk...

    8. This is a continuous question from one of the one's above the Aqib had mentioned. The book ended here, but not David's or Sean's life. What do you think will happen to both of them in the future? Will Sean and David still be friends for their whole lives? Will David be able to walk? Will Sean get a related job with basket ball or David? What will happen to the relationship with Sean and Caroline? Will David be accepted by a girl unlike Lisa who didn't feel as comfortable with him?
What do you think will happen to them in the future?

  7. think that I would definelty give this book a 5. I say this because I thought this book had everything, it had comedy, heartwarming, tear dropping, emotional scenes that I really liked.

I think what made the book so engagin was they way Mr.Cheney read the book. He read it with so muich emotion and passion. The book really makes you think about how we view the world around us. And it makes you wonder and predict what wpuld happen next, and I really like that about the book. That we could relate it to the world because as Mr.Cheney had said it isn't just about a kid in a wheel chair trying to play basketball, its more than that.

    2. No, I did not actaully tear up and start crying i just mean it was really sad and all when we saw the other side of David and how hurt and decieved he felt and how driven he was to do something drastic, I felt passionate.

    6. Of course. But what stops me is the people who support me and whom I can rely on. I'm mostly grateful for that.

    7. I agree with Eden. Everyone has felt this way or might soon. This is part of life, and there will always be one thing that will bother you, but it will either be fixed or accepted as.
Hosni, have you ever felt that way? I mean, I usually see girls feeling this hard, since its sensitive moments and feelings. I have just seen David as a guy go through hard times too. I mean girls can relate to this easily, how about guys?

      Delete
    8. So Aynur, is it that you are saying that you have really good supporting friends like Sean? Are they like Sean? If so, how?

      Delete
    9. Aniqer I think that boys have a tough time too you know. Because boys and girls are both equally humans regardless of what it may be. Boys just probably have a different way of expressing how they feel than girls do. All guys have felt this way at some point in their lives. So have girls, it's just that everyone has their own personal way of dealing with it. Ok?

      Delete
    10. Also yes I do have friends that are similar to Sean. They're very supportive but not all of them can really get me through my tough times. I do have a very close friend though, that does give me the support I need.

    5. If we were to read each book with our open mind and different strategies of thinking, I bet every book could be enjoyable. I believe that there is no such thing as having a " bad book". It's just that you are closed up about this book or your preferences don't match.

    6. I agree with what you said. Mr.Cheney read it to us in like a daily routine.

  9. I would give this book 4.5. The reason why I chose to give this rate because I noticed that once I was reading a chapter of the book by myself, I realized how different it sounded and how it felt when Mr.Cheney read it. In my own mind it was weird for some reason. It's like when Mr.Cheney reads it there’s much more action to it. How he played into it was what made the book itself. Has anyone else felt that way too?
The book is amazing and it's very realistic. You can probably relate to it in many ways and the unique thing about it is that it teaches you not to give up. It shows you that no matter how big the problem is, you can still fight through it and gain so much from it. It touched my heart, and it has affected me somewhat once the story was done.

    3. Yes, I have felt that way too..I'm curious, who is your favourite character????

      Delete
    4. Aynur, this question is continues to Hosni's question. If you were to recommend it to someone, how would you do so? I mean my reaction from the cover of the book was " Oh great... Basketball, I don't even know how to play basketball..." But in the end, I caught myself judging from the cover of the book. All this time I've been finger waving at people telling them to not judge a book by it's cover, and this is what I realize.
Now, if you showed this to your friend, they would probably make a similar reaction or just rub it off like it's some old movie type book. How can you convince you someone that this book is different not, what they are expecting?

      Delete
    5. @Hosni Hmm, I'm not sure if I would recommend this book to anyone. But I would tell my close friends to read it because its a really good book but I'm not quite sure if it's their style. :s I say that because most like fantasy and whatever, so when I tell them to read it I'm not sure if they'd hear me out.
Also it was weird because my thoughts sound way different than Cheney's voice. The book almost sounded...plain & simple in my head. It's tough to describe the difference.
@Eden I'd say my favorite character is David. David is different, funny, and unique in his own ways. There's this depth about David that I like.

      Delete
    6. @Aniqer Well I'd tell them to trust me and believe when I say that it is a great book. In the end it's their choice whether they want to read it or not, but I will tell them that it is a good book and not just about basketball. There's really not much I can do except tell them not to judge right away and read it for me. In the end it's their choice like what can you do about that

      Delete
    7. Your right aynur this book does teach us a lot about judging a book by its cover which was exactly what we all did the first time we saw the front page of this book, admit it or not.

  10. I would rate this book a 5. This book taught me more than any other book. Once you find out what a part really means, like when David saw the two boys make fun of him, it was like a slap to the face. This book taught us to think harder to find out what the morals are.
And the characters thoughts were described perfectly, it actually makes you feel like you're Sean the whole time. You got nervous when he did, mad, cheerful, and so on.

    3. Another ending could've been the more terrifying ending. Sean didn't find David and he threw himself off the edge. No one would've wanted an ending like that, but sometimes it happens. The worst part about that is no one would really be able to find his body becuase of the raging river, and Sean would be devastated.

      Delete
    4. Or maybe Sean would be able to see it.. when he looked down from the cliff...AT THE RAGING RIVER. I'm really glad that didn't happen, if it did, the book would be too emotional and not too much inspirational. However, it does happen, in this world it happens.

      Delete
    5. @Sarah that's what I thought it would be like too if it were to end a different way. The book would be longer because then Sean would have to gain something from that and yeah I hope for people that might be going through the same thing make the right choice and see that there is still hope

  11. I would give this book a 5. The characters sounded realistic. They all potrayed differebt emotions. The author understood what the life of a teenage kid is. We could all relate these characters to ourselves. The settings and plot made sense to me. Everytime we stopped reading the book, I'd be in denial. the author really knew how to intrigue a reader.
The emotions- like I said before- the author potrayed the emotions to every character very well. We could relate to the charcters. Each sentence held so much emotion, whenever there was a sad moment, you could find yourself feeling sad to, whenever someone got angry we'd get angry too and so on.
The book had a meaning to it and I've learned so much from this book, that not everything can be solved, we're just gonna have to face it.

    1. True, but it wasn't the author that made these characters realistic and being able to connect it to yourself, it was you. You imagined the character and was able to connect it to yourself. What the author did was keep missing parts for you to complete. So no matter how you think, the characters can be just as you like.

  12. I would give this book "REBOUNd" a 5 because this book have a really great story about a person in wheel chair. the author didn't just write a book about David, Sean,Scott and others but he write this book for everyone and he put us as a character in the book. And the book turned so good as the way Mr. Cheney read it like he say it the way the character in the book is saying... And how a person in a wheel chair can play basketball and how his dreams can come true at a point. Also I like the way the author write this book like he first put sadness, than happiness to David's life.

    2. it gave me a message on how not to ever give up on your friends always be there for them because in the book sean never left david..... that part made me think of sean a little better of him because i thought he was a bad friend but now that we finished the book he is really a good friend.....

    3. To me, I think that the moral would be "Accept your present but hope for your future". All of the ones above are also all correct and is interesting to see the different thoughts.

I think there isn't just one moral to this book there are multiple lessons we can learn from here a few are don't judge someone by how they look and are from the outside, accept yourself the way you are but sometimes its okay to keep your hopes up sometimes for miracles that may or may not happen.

  15. I say 4. Because the book actually feels like its portraying our life as teens. Also it is telling us a moral...That not always we have success, but you have to find another way to get you to your goals. Its like finding a loop hole. I would rate it a 5 if it had a little more drama, because in reality it would be realistic. Meaning like in real life scott would have beat up sean after the arguement. But overall i like the book. The characters have good realism. But i think they should have made more roles for people like Nick,Gavin,Sean's siblings too. Because at the starting i thought the siblings were going to play a critical part but they didnt. Because in real life siblings have a critical role in our lives. But yes i like this book.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Do you want the siblings to have a part? What kind of part would they play? Wouldn't the book get stuffy and crowded since, the siblings don't have as much to do in Sean's life in moments as much as David and the others has to do?

      Delete
    2. Hmm, siblings can maybe even take part in Sean's everyday life, like it always does. The author has yet to portray that.

      Delete
    3. so you wanted siblings to be shown more in this book.

  16. I would give this book a 5. I would give this book a 5 because this book was really interesting to read and I liked how I didn't expect the book to end the way it did. The way the auther wrote it was just so good, I could feel all the emotions that the characters felt and thats what I loved most about Rebound was the realism.

The end was shocking for me when I heard David wanted to do suicide because David looks so strong and tuff I wouldn't have expected someone like David to even consider Suicide as a option. But I guess he got tired of being in a wheel-chair and he saw suicide as the only way out.

Also the way Mr.Cheney read it brought the book to life. The way his voice changed as the characters emotions changed brought the book to its full potential.

This book was amazing and I would reccomend it to everyone.

      Delete
    3. Was it really shocking that David was tempted to do suicide? Even though he looked tough and what not, aren't the people who never cry who never try to show their weak side, happen to be one of the most weakest people? There is a saying to that, the people who love the most are the saddest, and the people who never cry are the weakest. What do you think at this point now? Now that the book has finished, when you see someone like David, what would go through your mind now?

      Delete
    4. Despite David's toughness and strong feelings, I still had an assumption of him thinking of suicide. It's such a horrible topic to predict about, I felt like regretting it. However... like Sean had mentioned, he would have killed himself by then if he was in a wheel chair.

      Delete
    5. @Sarah yeah that's true @Nauman did you expect him to do suicide?

@Aynur well I think it was because David seemed so focused on the fact that he WILL walk again not just a maybe or anything he was Absolutly sure about it and yea that's true but not all people are like that. I think what would go threw my mind is what Sarah said "Even the strongest could break down. All they have to do is hold a fake smile and everyone thinks you're alright. You never know until it actually happens "

  17. I think this book gave us a better understanding of being different. We'll never know how it REALLY is until it happens to us one day, and without the option to look back. It was an intense and intersting story. I've never understood the moral so well or how symbolism can be so... engaging ad hidden, but understandable and so true. It gave an understanding; especially with some explanation from Mr. Cheney. I'd give it a 5; for the moral behind it and how the author was trying to show the symbolism, and a +; for Mr. Cheneys leading to getting a better understaning of every detail, first letting us guess, and them building up the rest of our understanding, and we CANNOT forget his intense reading and emotion and effort he puty into it

Well tushar it depends on your passion for the sport like maybe if some people played basketball before and loved it but after that got into a accident like david that people thought it was not possible for you to play again,if you have the passion it can happen like david you could still be a star.an example would be Tyler miller he told us about his passion for basket ball then about his accident and how now he has become a Canadian paralympic basketball star!!

    2. yes farina but we all pretty mucvh say that the way it was read ands displayed and the way the emotions in the book touched ours do you really think it matters whether its in a girls vision or boys.the fact is that we all learned a valuble lesson and we learned alot about life in our own generation.as david and sean are abotu the same age as all of us.

    3. Hahah, sometimes different perspectives are what help us get a better understandiong like how we built the character trait os spme characters, and that kinda helped us to more into the story then just a boy in a wheelchair and a boy who isn't.

      Delete
    4. I found it interesting in a boys point of view. They don't express feelings as much and as easily as girls. So when we see it from a boy. It's different, and i like it.

    5. I actually am glad and enjoyed this book from a boy's point of view.
Farina, if you could choose another character from this book to be written by their point of view , perhaps a girl according to your preferences, who would it be? ( Sean's older sister, younger twin sisters, Sean's mother, David's mother, Caroline, Lisa, etc?)

  20. I would give Rebound a 15 because it had a really great story-line about what I believe was overcoming your bias towards people in wheelchairs. I really like the fact that he made David the hardcore bad-boy type while making Sean the less bad-boy bad-boy type. I thought it put a nice twist on the story. Normally they're about the strong non-cripple helping the actual cripple achieve his dreams but Eric Walters twisted it in the beginning but ended up having the non-cripple help the real cripple to accept what happened and to let it go, not entirely but to the point where it wasn't taking up his entire life.

    3. For some reason, I was kind of wondering if David would have a break down, since he can;t always be up and happy. A story has an emotional part where, everything just goes all the way down buried. So, not in a negative way, but I kind of expected hiim to make such thoughts.

    4. I kind of knew it was coming because he was soo fed up with life.

  22. I would rate this book 5 because the way the author described/used the characters. It was in the persprctive of Sean but all the importants was towards David.

Also, I liked that the author left "space" in the book for readers to fill by themselves. though the author made Scott a side character, he still gave him that "cool" personality and left space for us to fill out for the other cahracters.

Finally, I admired that the author played with our emotions and doing the unexpected. It keeps the readers engaged into the story.

    1. Talking about spaces that the author had left, did he ever talk about how Caroline and Lisa looks? Or had that been one of the spaces to be filled? This is because, my own imagination had built up on how they would look, and now I am unable to remember what the author had written.
I don't remember what the author wrote but, I do remember what she looks like in my imagination. That actually proves the point of why we do this character building up.

    2. Well.... you right. The author didn't mention the looks of any of the grade 7 girls that were mentioned. But that gives us the opportunity to describe or imagine them ourselves.

  24. My rate for Rebound is a 5! I have never read a book like this.Every chapter every page every word has a deep meaning to it which we all can relate to and have a connection to the real world. This book is able to bring out our reality and in how we treat people and the emotions of people.
When last year we read this book for the first time. My emotions were different I didnt know what I had signed up for and as we began to read, my predictions were so off, what I thought would happen like in every other book didnt actually happen. The opposite happened which I really liked because it made me think differently. It made me think that there can be two different perspectives.
As eden said this book had everything ,the sad,the happy, the angry, but not only emotion wise also reading strategies wise, which unlcude symbolisim. This book was made to study.Everything stands for something.
The characters in this book are real.Somewhere around the world there is someone like them that goes through this everyday, we say we "UNDERSTAND" and we "FEEL THE PAIN" but really we dont! All we know is that they are in a wheel chair and they need help doing certain stuff. But I would have never thought of that before but i did after we read the book. Before being in a wheel chair seemed easy and fun when really its a whole hassel. This book was able to bring out OUR characters. As Mr.Cheney says "WE are the CHARACTERS in THIS book". This isn't the same story of our life but it is able to connenct because all these little things that happened in Sean and Davids life has happend to ours.Example having a place we like to go alone just to spend some time thinking we all have a place either its our bedroom or some where else. in my opinion none of us may be in a wheel chair, now we understand the hassel, the pain and the trouble BUT WE STILL DONT FULLY UNDERSTAND. Just listening to the persons life made us realize but we arent in the persons shoes so we have no clue.

    1. Good writing! I especially loved your conclusion of the last sentence. It's as if we think we know how they feel but, really its just SYMPATHETIC AND PITY towards them. From my experiences, I don't WANT anyone's pity. It was either you understand or "your just like THEM".
At first, I, myself pitied David. I felt bad for him not even knowing what for! All I knew is that he sat in a wheel chair and that is hard. But WHY is it hard? It's not because, he is stuck in a wheel chair, it's more that the wheel chair is his present but as well as the painful relation to the past! Overcoming the past isn't easy. Not when you turn out to be 'different' ... but, in the end you realize you 'difference' just made your life unique, a personal story, a painful story maybe, but at least it's not boring. All the movies we watch with people fighting but, ending up with a cool and gradual life, that is what happened to you in real life. It's easier to explain it as " Yes, you survived it!"

      Delete
    2. I have question for Neha, you said now you partially know how a kid in a wheel chair feels like.

Do you think more people in a wheelchair have accepted and moved on or grumpy as David (in the beginning of the book)?

In general, how long would it take for someone to accept their position?

If a chaired kid was infront of you and neede help but didn't call for help, would you help him/her?
*****Keep in mind that now you know that wheel chaired kids/adults usually dont like for help because they would feel they have a disadvantage! In result, they would probably get mad...

  25. The book (Rebound)was awesome and i would rate it at a 5. The reason why i say this is because, the book really talks to you about on how it feels like to be in a wheel chair for the rest of your life. But alot of people have to live with it, even if its hard. People have to struggle and get use to it because its never gonna change. But the part that was really sad was when David wanted to kill himself, just because he had to live the rest of his life in a wheel chair now a days people feel this way just because their in a wheelchair, but acually, alot of people can be in a wheel chair, but also can be a famous athlete. Tyler Miller he had to be in a wheel chair for the rest of his life, but he had became one of the most famous wheel chair basketball players ever. So for my advice, if your in wheel chair for the rest of your life, its okay because you can become one of the most famous Basketball athlete just like Tyler Miller!

  27. I would rate this book a 4 out 5. Don't get me wrong, I loved this book and it was unique than the others ones I had read before. I learnt many lessons, and also realized that, when I tell people I understand them, I'm actually lying to myself and them , when I really don't know how they feel. My sympathetic mode an pity takes over and I know they feel bad, but the range which I do not know. I developed my imagination in which I am able to create a character of my choice out of a few words. It's interesting how David is dealing with a wheel chair, when others are dealing with something TOTALLY DIFFERENT but, can easily relate. It just makes you feel that every problem had different situations but, the same moods and atmosphere going on. We also know that everyone goes through this, so at one point everyone can understand your feelings but, in different ways which causes as to tend to hide. That is the realism to it.
The characters are well explained and as it's opposite, partially not even explained! I am actually grateful for that since I can imagine and let my mind free for a while. It's like I get to pick what I want, having options make you feel more engaged so you can make the character the way you would enjoy.
The moods and atmosphere really got in me. It's like a familiar, similar, or strange feeling that yo felt this before or that you've seen this as well. This is like you being open minded, except when you let feelings in from a book you basically open your heart!
Now, the reason why I did not rate this a 5 is because, the book was only so good due to how much of a good reader we were ourselves. If we didn't let our heart open, we wouldn't feel the way the characters felt, and it would be a disappointment to see this book as the same as others. Also, as Mr.Cheney's voice goes to the highest to lowest deepens, had made a great affect on how much we thought about the character. If we weren't open minded , we wouldn't think much of creating Scott, Nick, and Gavin. If we were to not do this task as readers, by now the characters would barely exist! What I am saying is that the author is a good writer but, we also have to cope with him to be able to make the story AMAZING.

  28. I would definitely give this book a 5++.As Oscar Wilde once said “If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.” And as a huge fan of reading there have been many books that I don't enjoy either because it make no sense or just isn't interesting. There are very less amount of books that do attract my attention. But a book like Rebound made me want to read it over and over again.
The reason I found Rebound, "the book" to read was because it attracted my attention, I was able to make it my own (meaning being able to connect to myself) and the story made sense I was also willing to read it again and again and I didn't get bored, as some may know this is my second year reading this book, I knew what to expect but I didn't feel bored, and was ready to re-read the book.
Rebound was more than just a book; it was the realism of life. Many books are made to read and enjoy but the story line makes no sense, books tend to flip back and forth which makes it hard to expect what’s to come up next but this book was just something different we were able to predict what might come up next by putting puzzle pieces together, it may not be the outcome we expected but it is the outcome that makes sense, the outcome that actually happens.
Rebound made me realize, I don’t understand anything on how it’s like to be in a wheel chair. We all state and conclude we know how it feels we've been through the same NO WE HAVENT! Getting your arm broken for a few weeks isn’t the same as your life in a wheel chair “forever”.Books make you realize the reality and this book has!
This book shows that different people have different struggles in their life. It may seem they are alright at school or when you talk to them they are cheerful but that’s just a fake smile. People just decide to keep their head up , stay strong and have a fake smile. Knowing their inner thoughts and what they go through is never expected but when you realize all about it and put the pieces together you realize that thats life. Just listening to the person’s life made us realize but we aren’t in the persons shoes so we have no clue.
This book rebound has created a whole new life for all of us.

  29. I would rate this book a 3 because I normally like books that I can relate to my life. Rebound was a buzz kill on how it cut a exciting scene with ending a chapter, also how it never gets back on what happened to Scott, I was wondering that.

Also with all those negative comments you must be thinking why I still gave it a 3, Its because mr cheney read it like not any other teacher, also how we got to do skits and we are now doing a RSA.

Rebound is a very realistic book at most of the scenes, which I liked and how it didnt have a "happy" ending was real.

and mr.cheney does put emotion in his reading so i give 2 thumbs up to him.

  31. I would rate the book 4.I rate it a 4 because I liked the book and I like how the character fit in the book but I think they should make a other part to it so the story can continue on.

  32. 4-5 I really enjoyed the book, but I doubt I would have chosen this book on my own. It's a book that if I haven't read it I would've regret it. It has a good message and the quotes that Mr.Cheney took from Rebound I took to the heart, its not one of those everyday quotes you don't hear them often. This book had the characteristics that I like in a book, I'm glad I got a chance to "read" the book!

  33. I would rate the book a 4/5 because of the way it was read, for example Mr. Cheney was reading with a lot of expressions, different tones in his voice depending on character. If i were to read the book myself i probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as i did. I was so engaged that wish there was a continuation. If there was i would have probably enjoy it and read it myself.
