Rebound - will David walk again?

  1. Will David walk again? why do you think that?

78 comments:

  1. in my opinion, i believe that David will not be able to walk again, mostly because it is impossible so far to regrow nerves and what not, I know this mostly since in this field (Biology) i know what i am saying, and we will not have this type of technology until 2050. Even though that this is a book, it is not like star wars where you can get moving prosthetic limbs after you lost them, and you can not regrow them either since humans do not have the ability to do that, even if does have the ability to regrow skin and regenerate blood. the nerves are far to complicated and mitosis ( the fancy word for cell/DNA replication ) proves NOT possible to nerves, only in stasis form before being born. In conclusion i do not believe David will walk again, but then again you got to have some hope right???

    1. Indeed science is not there yet...how reliable is the 2050 prediction?

    2. It was an assumption that i came to conclude, since right now we are only at the prosthetic stage and in ten-ish years we will have prosthetic's that can connect with the nerves. this will be about 2025, 25 years later it is most likely all going to organic material that we will be using using parts of body using DNA from parts of the old digit, to create a new one, in a homeostasis chamber ( or a regeneration tank ) where the DNA can go through mitosis and create a new limb under a watchful eye of course.

    3. David must be aware of this how come he seems more optimistic about the future! You predict 2050 but David seems more certain

    5. would David be alive at 2050 you never know death can happen any time and anywhere

    11. Hamza, it isn't important that if David will be alive or not in 2050, that comment is just going of topic. the important thing is if he will he be able to walk again

    13. The difference is that the salamander is reptilian and is col;d blooded, plus it's body and anatomy is totally different from our own, it can regenerate, but not entirely, or not even the exact same. for humans, our bones are made of marrow and that is not easily regenerated, bones are bulky, not only that but if you lose your leg, you have grow back your veins, arteries, nerves, nerve endings, bone, muscle, tissue, marrow, and blood the bones in the feet. the salamander is simpler since it is smaller

  2. Question 1) I think that David can be able to walk again. I think this because in the text David knows allot about cells and regeneration. he seems to know what he was researching because hes in a wheelchair and maybe he wanted to do this project to have more info about his accident and to tell not only Sean but the whole class about what he has to go through. David has a passion and has faith in him self that he can play basketball again, if i am correct he said that when he gets his legs to work he will be able to walk again and that Sean and David will both be on the basketball team. In my opinion i think that if David has passion and faith in him self that he can get back his legs to work "be able to walk" i think that he will be able to walk again.

    2. even though David has research about cell regeneration, and has faith in him self it doesn't mean he can get that kind of technology. people know how birds fly and steer,(research)and we have been trying for a longtime and we learned to make planes and such(faith and believe) but we still couldn't make costumes that could let us fly anywhere, anytime. maybe it is possible in the future, but not know.

  3. Yes, I do think that David will walk again because as David had explained in the book he had seemed to understand the process, of how everything worked, and the nerve regeneration. He had seemed to take in all the information and process it in a way so he could understand it. Because of this maybe David himself would be the one to find the cure. But for now as he himself is interpreting all this information, he is trying to understand what is going on in the scientific world about as David explained, nerve regeneration. Since he is trying to get all this information it seems that maybe soon or near future a cure will show up and he may walk again. But for now it seems that he won’t. But I know he will walk again because he is determined to. He believes that he could do it, he believes that the scientists will find a cure.

    1. Taking a word that ismaeel described, David has faith. Faith that he is going to walk again. Faith that both David and Sean are going to play basketball together. David is passionate about walking again. With this passion maybe few years or so david himself could find the cure

      Delete
    2. Believing is still better than giving up and being hopeless. Believing and having faith will probably boost your confidence and urge to get on your feet once again. Also, seeing how fast science and technology is advancing there is a chance that if not now, there will be a cure for it. Just like for Terry Fox there wasn't cure for such cancer back then but within a few years there now is a cure, just like that David's condition won't kill him so as long as he's alive and growing older, there might be a cure later on.

believing and just sitting there wont get you anywhere. but believing and actually working for it is enough because that gets you one step closer to getting what you want. in david's case, he has to have the faith in order for him not to give up so easily and keep going no matter how tough it gets. thats what he need his faith for not just having it and waiting for his legs to start working automatically.

      Delete
    4. @katherine Do you think that David is actually able to do soemthing? Do you actually think that he has enough knowledge to actually find a cure himself. If great scientists who have studied for years can't get enough information, how likely do you think that david will find a cure?

      Delete
    5. why are you making this seem so impossible for david? you may be right but he could research more and find out more then ask scientists about it and maybe he can find something that will help those scientists. you never know. he cant just hope and do nothing about it. u guys r too focused on his faith. he needs it, but only having it is nothing. as ive been saying he needs to do something about it to get a result whether it is of researching or actually asking doctors how he can walk again, not just sitting there for a miracle to happen.

      Delete
    6. i agree with what jamin is saying here, there is a very low chance that David will Actually be able to find a cure for himself.he seems more like that jock type with his knowledge of sports and all but what of that fact that he is also easily the smartest kid in his science class. Despite the fact that he his one of the smartest kid's, he does have a fair understanding of the human body and he does have that motivation and drive to get out of his chair. And to have a friend like Sean is probably good to

      Delete
  5. I think that David will walk again because when he was explaining to Sean about what he added to their project, he seemed to know a lot about the process of nerve regeneration.Because of this, he may know someday about what needs to be done for him and others like himself to stand on his feet again. Also, he will walk again because the passion he has for basketball will make want to find the cure. So i think that David will be able to walk again and a cure will be found.

    1. David does not know more than scientist and doctors and i am pretty sure he got his info from computers and books and doctors and scientist know way more than that

  6. I think that David may be able to walk again because i think that maybe the author added the part where they talk about the human body, they talked a lot about how your body parts can get paralyzed and what happens when you are paralyzed. He also talks about the fact that there may be a way to make Davids legs start working again. David sounds very sure that his problem will be cured so it seems like it is very likely that his legs can be cured. In every chapter of every book, everything that is written is written for a reason. One part of a book leads to another authors will not just add a bunch of useless and irrelevant information so that the reader will become bored. the author most likely added this peice of text so that the reader starts getting more engaged in the book because they will start predicting about what will happen in the book next.
According to the website www.mayfieldclinic.com a broken vertebrate or spinal cord may lead to paralysis since signals are sent through the spinal cord, I'm guessing this is what happened to David because he talks about his spinal cord getting injured with Sean due to an accident. The website indicates that a broken vertebrate or spinal cord may take a few months to heal on its own. If the situation is very serious then surgery may be needed, maybe David will have to go through surgery at one point because it seems that his spinal cord hasn't healed by itself, so it looks like David may have to undergo surgery.
Although an important thing is that the Spinal cord is just the case for the nerves so even if the spinal cords bones do heal he still may not be able to walk again. Inside the spinal cords are the nerves. If the nerves are damaged then you become paralyzed. So until both the spinal cord and nerves heal David won't be able to walk. I think that this is the case because only if you have broken nerves then you won't be able to walk, if you just have broken spinal cord then after the spinal cord heals you will be fine. If you have a broken spinal cord you will not be paralyzed unless your nerves also get damaged.
There is a way to get paralyzed people to become unparalyzed and David has also mentioned a part of this in the book. Researchers have tried removing scar tissues with drugs and laying down scaffolds and inserting new cells. This has worked many times before, but the problem is it has only been tested on animals such as rodents. Since scientist have already tried it on animals and they know the concept of the cure it is very likely that scientist will find a cure very quickly. Scientists may end up curing humans with this method but they may not as well. Although since scientist already know the concept of the cure they may be able to work it out on humans.

maybe david wont just wait, maybe he will start researching things up on how to be able to walk again or -even deeper- what scientists have found out about nerves. i dont think he'll want to sit there and just wait, maybe he will find out more on what going on and talk to a scientist or maybe a doctor. if by any chance hes tried what he can and nothing happens, then maybe he will just wait but he doesnt look like he is the kind of person that gives up so easily...

    10. @jamin you say that you believe that David will be able to walk again because he believes that he can. Do you really think that faith is the key here?

      Delete
    11. @reshmi but if scientists have been researching for years, don't you think that people who are living the lifestyle would need something to latch on to?

      Delete
    12. @reshmi i will be taking jamins place for this question! well in some sense that might be the the right option. if you dont have faithg your practically saying you will never get your legs back. and if you say that you might not realize they are working on a cure for nerve damage, and you really might loose your legs for good. so faith is one really big factor in this you must always have faith. and honestly everyone in a wheelchair wishes for the day they can wake again.

      Delete
    13. @reshmi i didn't just say that David will walk again because he believes he can, i said that he should believe that he can and that Scientists are close to finding a cure for healing the nerves and that is how David will be able to walk again.

    14. @manjot yes I strongly agree with you, they do need some hope but just believing isn't going to get your legs to work. If you are just sitting down and say to yourself "everything is going to be fine, I will be able to walk again!" doesn't guarantee that its going to happen? Does it?

    17. @devesh I understand that faith is a big factor but if you just believe it will certainly not get you anywhere. for example if I put myself in David's shoes, yes I would have faith and believe that I will get my legs back, but I cant be positive. Believing is not the factor that will give me my legs back, the research and the cure will.

both reptiles and humans are different, but the way we regenerate, is it the same? you say that it is impossible for humans to regenerate and compare the way we do regenerate to lizards and such. both humans and lizards have different bodies.

    4. I never said that were the same all I said is that if Animals can do it naturally Humans Might as well wait 100 billion years and hope we`ll evolve and hopefully gain the strand of genes that we need I think we don`t need science We could do it naturally just as we gain Our Thumbs or how we have speech

    5. it is not impossible because it all depends on injury

    6. @monjot it is not impossible for people to regenerate. to be honest we do it all the time for example skin cells we are losing and creating cells everyday. and if we never regenerated we would never heal. us regenerating is how our human body functions.

    7. @devish i never said that humans cant regenerate, i said that both humans and lizards regenerate in different ways

      Delete
    9. But Devesh Skin is a very Simple piece of cells its easy for us to regen our skin because we have lots of it but for bones there might only be 1 or 2 in our body its not very likely it can duplicate it

      Delete
  8. yes he will be able to to walk again. just because we is sitting in a wheelchair due to a broken bone, wont mean he he is going to stay there. bones heal they never stay broken due they. lets say your bone is broken over a period of time cells will replace the old with the new. but this does not go for all bones some bones take longer than others some don't heal at all. but the spine is a bit different it has a hole to let the nerves in your body pass through. once a part from your spine is fractured or broken it damages the nerves in that region. the bone will heal over time, around 3 months. but the nerves that are in side the spinal cord can be permanently damaged ( which is what happened to David ).

this is a very common problem for people that fracture or brake their spine but now researchers are looking for a way to regenerate cells. it is possible said the researchers but it seems to be wary of this because it might not work. but it is also proven you can repair damaged nerves. it has been tested on animals and proven a success in multiple tests. and soon be on the final stage of testing. but their are other ways as well their seems to be therapy as well and it seems be working.

and with all this research and activity to find the cure for nerve damage it seems utterly possible that David will get his legs back! it may not be soon but in the near future David will get his legs back. once this happens they will finally be able to play proper basketball.

  9. I think that David will walk again because he is determined to. When Sean says that he does not think David can walk again David says no he will be able to walk again and both of them are going to play basketball together. He believes that he is going to walk again and maybe it may not be soon but I think that he will. Why I think this is because the text said that David knows a lot about what happened to him and nerve regeneration, he researches a lot when he has the time. It said that he knows all these facts and he added a whole other part to him and Sean’s presentation. You never know with all that information he knows and with the help of scientists or other people he can find a way for him to walk again.

  10. I think that David will not be able to walk because even in the front of the book when don't even open it it has a picture of David on a wheel chair wearing fancy basket ball shoes an Sean right beside him so that picture should be symbolic of some thing and even if he done lots of research he has not done more than any scientists any doctor that want people back on there feet but you never know his research could may be right and he could come back to his feet but if not wrong he got hurt on spine and most spine accidents never heal but you can hope these types of cases it just depends on your injury if its the healing type or not but most cases the person never heals its cells that have been ruined or his or hers spine so we could hope!

  11. i am not so sure david will be able to get his legs to work because his nerves on his legs are damaged and he cannot feel anything but since he, as ismaeel said has faith, and hopes to get his legs working again, he will try his best to find a cure for the legs so he could use them again. according to what ivan said, science technology isnt as far right now but why would they show david so into getting his legs to work if it wont happen or if its impossible? also maybe they have to experiment some thing that scientists found and while doing that experiment on david, what if it cures him and his nerves will grow back? as i said im not so sure because i think even now scientists are trying to find a cure still but then again if he cant be cured at all why would the author spend so much time on focusing on david and what he believes?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. well it is proven that his nerves can heal, the site is on jamins post. also just like ivan said 2050, the future thats when they are going to come up with the cure is also bias. we might find the cure a year from now. this all leads to curing nerve damage and getting Davids legs back. but there is some debate about it working or not. and honestly it is a realistic debate. but i honestly believe he will get his legs back have faith.

      Delete
    2. @devesh I agree with what you are saying, like you need faith, but having faith isn't going to get you anywhere if you don't do anything about it. I wouldn't say faith is the most important thing here. The scientists research and the cure is most important, because that's the only way David can get up on his two feet again.

      Delete
    3. yes i must agree with you research is important but as i said in jamins post faith is also a key component. without faith determination we couldn't get anywhere. people who excelled all had faith in their ideas and believed it would work. that how people became innovators and great scientists. and lets say the researchers don't have faith in what they are doing it is as good as giving up.

      Delete
  12. I'm not 100% guaranteed that in the book David will be able to walk again but I believe he will. I think that because David seems to now so much about the nerve generation and how is up to date with all his facts, one day a cure will ready to be functioned on humans with and David's nerves will start to work again. Its not like we only have one scientist working on a way to come up with a possible cure to get David's legs to function again. We have many scientists in the world who just spend their life trying to come up with ways to cure certain diseases. And David is pretty solid with his research and its determined to say that he WILL walk again! Also, scientists have already experimented on animals and the cure seemed to work. The cure is there but has not been tried on humans and if it does go wrong, I would say that it can just be a minor mistake and with a few touches the cure can be ready to present! David's and Sean's project also gave away how much knowledge David has about the nerve regenerating system and the author is so fixated on what David believes so in the end Id say yes, David will be able to walk again.

  14. In my opinion, David will walk again because he has severe determination to get on his feet again and play basketball and be a “normal” kid. Also, David’s body is still developing so there is a chance for broken bones or damaged nerves to heal. It may take time but it isn’t completely hopeless. Seeing how fast science and technology is advancing there is a chance that if not now, there will be a cure for it. Just like for Terry Fox there wasn't cure for such cancer back then but within a few years there now is a cure, just like that David's condition won't kill him so as long as he's alive and growing older, there might be a cure later on. From information and facts we have now, a reliable website shows that people who have had nerves damage can get a nerves transplant and be able to get over that paralysis. Everything can’t rely on science but there is hope overall as the previous example of Terry Fox. As years go by, we will continue to succeed in science and technology and as we advance there will be more cures that today many people die of and maybe in 100-200 years people may live a lot longer due to cures for everything even though with a million cures come a thousand diseases. However, this disability doesn't put him back on anything. David is absolutely normal and can do everything us regular people do. Things might be slower and harder but they’re not impossible. Believing and having faith is the best to do in David’s situation and just stay positive!

    1. Determination is not Enough to Fix a broken spine, also you cannot compare a Broken Spine to Cancer, Cancer took a few years for a "cure" but who knows how long it would take to repair the cells and nerves in someone`s spine

    2. The point is that if there's hope for a deadly disease like cancer to be cured, why not spinal nerves? I'm not saying that there will be for sure but it's better than giving up and sitting there hopeless doing nothing about it. David's determination to find out more about his disability and hard work to stand up on his own feet again will get him somewhere for sure. Maybe he himself could be the one to find the cure?

  15. David may be able to walk again in the future because they don’t have a cure for spinal cord damage currently and according to mayoclinic.org{ http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/spinal-cord-injury/basics/definition/con-20023837} it can cause a permanent damage but they also mentioned that “Many scientists are optimistic that advances in research will someday make the repair of spinal cord injuries possible.” http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/sci/sci.htm also said that “with spinal cord injury and aggressive treatment and rehabilitation can minimize damage to the nervous system and even restore limited abilities.” With that in future he might be able to walk again but he may need some support. David has to wait for the discovery for the cure because unlike the other parts of the body the spinal cord doesn’t have the ability to get repair on its own.
