Terry Fox

Terry Fox

The Terry Fox Story directed and produced by Steve Nash.

This is the most current biography of Terry Fox.  The 1st clip is the 3 minute long trailer and the 2nd clip is the hour long biography.

In order to truly appreciate the work we want to accomplish with the Terry Fox assembly we need to have a firm understanding of what his story is and thus truly appreciate why we participate in this important event every year.

This connects with our talks on hypocrisy.  How can we encourage and ask others to donate and participate if we don't know why we should get involved.

1.  In ONE word how did the documentary make you feel?

2. have you learned any lessons from the movie?

3.  How can you APPLY the lessons learned to your real life

4. Now go back and start some dialogue with your peers asking them to explain why they choose THAT word.

    3. I am as well because doctors will finaly get their cure for cancer and then they can stop causing cancer.

    4. how do doctors cause cancer?????

      Delete
    5. The idea of cancer is actually a condition of the mind. Doctors advertise the condition in order to get money for their cause but what they don't realize is that they only increase the awareness of it causing the fear of getting cancer which causes cancer!
I have had this happen to me. Remember at Albion Hills when I hit my head on the ice? You know what I was thinking? 'Wouldn't it be hilarious if I hit my head on a branch.' and I fell and cracked my head on the ice. Actually the ice cracked, but that's not the focus.
It's the power of suggestion. The more real something seems, the more real it becomes.
      That's all I'm saying.

    6. ummm....... ok but still i am talking about how do they physicaly create it because that was how this conversation started!

    7. How I just described it causes physical cancer.

    8. I'm not so sure if I agree with you on the whole doctors and money thing, but I've had the thought of cutting my finger while cutting vegetables to make dinner at home TWICE and both times i ended up cutting myself.

    9. or you just aim for the branch.....

    10. Well, sometime's doctors can make a few errors. But I have heard that doctors just make the situation worse by subscribing things too their patients.

I don't really think that they are causing the cancer because they are trying too find cures for it, that's why we have a variety of different foundations to support the cause. I do agree that they can make a few trials and errors during there procedures on trying to make a cure.
If someone is diagnosed by cancer they do things for the person too make them better. Like when Terry got his leg amputated, they gave him an artificial leg so he can still walk and from that he was able to run his marathon.

  4. I have learned to never give up and to always remember Terry for motivation.
I've also learned that to be determined does not mean to go all out and destroy yourself in the first strecth of your goal, but to reserve yourself. Not be lazy, but be reserved and do as Terry did.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes, doing as Terry did might be a difficult task because of everything that had happened but it wasn't impossible, so using Terry as a motivation would be a good start in completing a goal.

    1. How is Terry self centered? o.O

      Delete
    2. Maybe because, he didn't care about what othe told him about not making it. He just kept his hopes between himself so he can keep believing without any interference.

      Delete
    3. Not terry, it made me feel sefcentered because of how we quickley we give up, and Terry just kept going. Also how we don't even want to donate to the cause for cancer sometimes, but we don't think about the people who need it, I mean what if you or I ended up with cancer, wouldn't you want people to donate so a cure can quickley be found?

      Delete
    4. Yes, I agree with Fatma and what she said about donating. People go around saying that there going to donate and then when it comes down too it they ask other people to do it but they still haven't contributed anything to support the cause. They have to make sure that they do their part first.

      Delete
    5. I do agree with the donating part. Sorry for the misunderstanding, and I would think of it that way. Now I relize

    1. Well, I think that bravery is a good word because, not everyone could do the thing that Terry did and almost complete a whole marathon on an artificial leg across Canada. Most would think it's absurd to think such a thing. Instead of sitting in a hospital bed all day getting treatment for his disease he wanted to make a difference. It took not only courage and his competitiveness but also bravery. He was brave enough to do this tiresome, challenging goal.

    3. He makes you feel motivated because of everything he went through in his life so it makes you feel that you can do anything, from cancer too the marathon, he kept going until he reached his goal. But unfortunately he didn't.

      Delete
    4. i see that you feel motivatedm, but what is it that you feel so motivated about.

      Delete
    5. i think nauman is trying to say like after the video it makes you feel so motivated by knowing you can do whatever you want you jut have to put your mind to it.

      Delete
    6. I feel motivated in the fact that if I ever had a deep desire too do anything, anything at all, I could look at Terry Fox as an inspiration. I feel motivated about everything that I want. Like an example, This year I want too win athlete of the year, so I will take that motivation and use it as my strength.

      Delete
    7. Nauman I feel quite motivated too. You're right, without watching this video we would all be complaining during the upcoming Terry Fox walk. Wouldn't we? But now that its fresh in our mind and we know the proper story yet again we would feel horrible to whine just once during our walk.
Just thinking about that makes us realize how great Terry Fox is. He didn't even complain once and if it was one of us, we all know we probably would WITHOUT even having cancer.
Its sad and disappointing, but its pretty true.

  10. I learned that a true hero can come out of anywhere when needed most, and if you try hard enough you can be that hero.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Why do you think people need a hero to be the face of their campaigns? For example in the movie they said the Mr. Peanut dude wanted to run the last mile with Terry in exchange for a car. A CAR!!!! A CAR I TELL YOU!!!!!

      Delete
    2. yes but he turned it down. a true hero speaks for everyone who needs a voice. a hero doesnt do somthing for fame or fortune, they do it because they want to show the world that everything is worth fighting for.

      Delete
    3. He didn't do it for the fame, rather for the whole cause. I think at one point in the movie it seemed that he was even bothered by the press. But the publicity was good because people were becoming more aware of the cause and what he was doing, so they could make a bigger pledged or donation.

  11. 2.I have learned many lessons from this video such as never giving up for the things you love and keeping faith

  12. I've learned that if you put your mind to something, go for it and don't look back. Keep trying, even if you think it's impossible. Nothing is impossible if you don't want it to be.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 2. i learned that i should not loose hope even when i get dissencouraged by people who know very well. i also learned that there is no such thing as impossible. for example terry fox was a fully determined who was determent to run across canada which people said it was impossible.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You are right. I was thinking that too. They said it was impossible, but look at what he has accomplished. He almost reached his goal, but that doesn't matter. Everyone saw how hard he tried and the effort he made. Can you believe that he raised over half a billion dollars for Cancer? Not only that but he inspired so many giving them the hope and faith.
It was almost a miracle. Terry Fox was a miracle to everyone. When people doubt others, that's exactly when they get proven wrong.

  14. The leasons I have learn after watching this movie is we should NEVER LOSE HOPE because your hope is the only thing which leads you to your destination you want to reach. But if you lose your HOPE then you will never reach your destenation.

I would Apply this leason by never loosing my Hope about what i want to do and what i want to reach like how Terry Fox never loses his Hope.

  15. The lesson i learned from this movie is that I cant just give up because of a little obstacle becasuse Terry Fox ran with an amputated leg and i cant even walk the whole Terry fox walk here at school with out whining about my legs hurting so this has motavated me to Destroy the obstacle to get to my goal because Terry Fox did a million times better than me with a amputated leg!!!! TERRY FOX IS INSIPIRATION TO US ALL!!!!!!

    3. Yes, I agree and after we do the Terry Fox run at school, we always complain that are legs hurt and what not, while Terry ran almost across the country with one leg and an artificial leg. Thinking about the times how I complained about it makes me feel like a nub. He ran almost across the country, while we are running like 4 blocks -.-.

  22. I've learned that if Terry can run 3,339 miles in 143 days, without a leg, than we shouldn't be whining about anything. We shouldn't be doubtfull! If I was in Terry's shoes, I don't know what I would do, how I would feel. But I'm sure that I wouldn't even dare to go out anywhere, let alone run across Canada because of how people would look at me feel bad for me. But this documentary and Terry's effort has shown me to never give up, to never lose hope!

  29. We could apply these leasons to real life when we work in school. Working on projects, everyone has ideas. Some seem way to hard to do for that grade level. But it doesn't mean you can't do it. Just try, and try harder. Something great would come out of it in the end.

Also, not everyone's great in school. But you could start fresh every year. Presevere, keep trying. You could become an A student if you don't act lazy and just sit around all day. Everything you do, is up to you. So make critical decisions, and go for it.

  30. 2.Yes, this movie and terry foz has motivated me to never give up anything and everything is possible :) He showed that throughout the way you will be put down like when he started in quebec no one was their to cheer him on but that didnt make him stop he still continued to move on. I also learned that you will always need some motivation! By that i mean during the video he mentioned that some man in New york walked all across and so will he if that man could do it so could he. And now we are motivated as alot of people mentioned in their one word, who knows it can be any of us walking across canada , or doing something amazing just like him. You also need to fight everything. Nothing just comes into your hand and you can't be perfect. This video made me think about what mr.cheney said PERFECT PRACTICE makes PERFECT and pratice makes imporvement. He praticed and practiced it wasent perfect tho so he did struglle , if he did perfect pratice he could have been perfec but it would take much long much much longer to be perfect.

  31. 1. Nothing. Most of you are reading this saying"What!!! Are you crazy!?" No, i'm not crazy. The reason I wrote nothing is because in my opinion, one word can't describe how I feel. To hear about a guy who decides to raise money for cancer by walking across Canada with an amputated leg. I mean when I get a simple fever, I feel bad for myself. Terry had cancer, lost a leg, and to put the cherry on the cake, he walked on it everyday for 20+ miles.

He was soo motivated and because of his compettitve nature he never wanted too give up he just wanted too keep going and never stop.

    4. @Heta he was also motivated by the kids in the hospital like Eden said not just by the kid that was running across NYC
@Tushar and yes I do think his competitive nature drove him towards running for cancer and the kid he was riding bikes with all day even drove him towards running and like what Eden also said is that he was so movtitvated of his competitive nature he never wanted to give up he just keep on going
@Eden you are right he wanted to make a diffrence for the kids and never stop always kept on going

  44. Questions
    1. For some reason I feel happy because he payed his debts to society by runing across canada and gathering $10,000,000 he did not just become a sell out and do those concerts for self purpose. He actually was inspiring to alot of people even when the radio station said he didn't go across Quebec. That about ruined all of the work that went to that run.I think they had over "emphasised" the word amputee.
For me It made me feel like he wasn't one of us he wasn't "perfect".He was unique.Taking this back to self-esteem, he was like the paternity of it all.
Very motivating Documentary I can almost relate it to the "your not special speech" The people that do something that nobody has tried something that nobody has become. That is what makes you special.

  46. Yes, I have learned a very important lesson from this movie. I learned that, life...is something unpredictable. You never know what happens. We all live in risk carelessly but, we still realize this. Life goes bad in anyway. Only luck will bring you good things to life automatically. What really brings life awake is you. You believe in what you need and do what you want for it, you will surely get it somehow. Terry, did what he wanted. He had so many things to feel bad about and complain. He had one of the most disadvantaged life but, did he keep it that way? Of course not, he went along for what he wanted. People told him he can't but, he followed his own confident. What if others said so? Does it really matter what they say? He tried and got what he wanted. He may have had to stop but, he let the world be aware. He showed the world what he got. Now, people are helping him continue, even if he is not here. We have alot to complain and be upset about, everyone does but, if you do what you want and stay happy, you'll get what you want. You rule your life, no matter how bad it is.

    3. I think that he didn't always have a positive attitude but he was very determined so I think that when he got to Quebec he was thinking too himself that "it will get better" and "just keep going you can do it" He didn't let those little thing get in the way. Even when the cars would try too like push him off the road and people were like disliking it. But also they weren't aware of what he was doing first until he got more and more of the publicity attraction.

      Delete
    4. What I mean by that he didn't always have a positive attitude is that he had maybe a little low self-esteem because of those little remarks people might have made, and even when his parents tried to talk him out of doing the whole marathon, but I do think that he had too stay positive to keep going he had to keep encouraging himself that he's doing the right thing. lol it's sorta hard to explain :/

When Terry started to run almost everyone ignored him and told him to get off the road then some finally realized that he is running a marathon with an artificial leg!! Then everyone shut their mouths.

I can relate this to the novel rebound how mcCully felt sorry for him after he realized that he was in awheel chair.

One of my life goal was to run 12km non stop before I hit 15; I am running 4km non stop for now . I am almost their and I really was about to give up but my mom and some of my friends told me to keep on going before this summer for sure Ill hit 6 km.

    1. You could also use Terry as a motivation to not give up on 6km. After all he did almost finish his marathon on an artificial leg and if he could do it so can you.

  53. I think that I have learned lessons from this movie. I learned that judt too never give up on your dreams. I had a lot of mixed feelings druing the movie, I was sad, happy , surprised ect.

Words can't explain what Terry went through.
    He made people feel motivated.
When he went too get his leg amputated, he saw kids giving up and not trying. He was running for them, he was running for a chance of hope, he wasn't doing this for himself but the kids that were diagnosed by this heinous disease.

  54. you can apply this in real life by setting an example to others, just like terry he never gave up his dream of running for cancer.

  55. In my opinon i think being competitive is a good thing because it motivated you to do better and better NOT JUST BETTER BUT TO BE THE BEST, well for me it is. I believe that terry yes he was competitve but he wasent the best he could be, we all can see he could have been better but what he did was amazing he didn't end up finishing the fun but he did TRY to fight cancer and he did TRY to finish teh race.

  56. How can you apply this in YOUR REAL LIFE?

    1. Well, I believe you can apply this in many ways to your life.
He wanted us to believe that anything was possible.
If you have a goal, that you think is impossible to do just try and try and don't give up, that's the message that he was sending out too people. If you think that there's some sort of obstacle standing in the way of your victory, just keep going until you have reached the finish line.

  58. Terry fox became a national hero when he embarked on his marathon of hope.
He was such a competitive athlete that nothing would come in his way.
Although cancer was standing in the way, he would not let cancer be a reason why he should stop running. He wanted too do this, for all the kid's that he seen in the hospital. Not only for them but for everybody that was diagnosed with cancer.
Terry Fox was an inspiration not only too the kids but everyone.
He wanted too raise money for cancer research, The actual Terry Fox Foundation has contributed more than 500 million to battle the disease that forced him to withdraw halfway across the country and which claimed his life in 1981. He did not seek fame, his only intention was the was to help and inspire those, who like himself had been ravaged by cancer.

    1. Terry embodied much of what is best about Canada – selflessness, honesty, determination and incredible attitude. Thirty years after he began his quest, his legacy continues to uplift us. We all need a role model like Terry Fox in our lives, he keeps reminding us that nothing is impossible if you try.

  59. What type of leadership qualities do you guys think that Terry Fox demonstrated throughout his life?

    1. I think that Terry had demonstrated so many leadership qualities. One of them would be nothing is impossible, and never give up. Terry has inspired/motivated many people accross America to fight. His leadership qualities has helped him to become what he stands for today. If it were not for his leadership qualities he wouldn't be able to demonstrate what he has already done.

  62. The one word I would use is Inspried because a kid Inspried Terry to run for cancer

    1. It wasn't "a kid" it was other kids who were fighting cancer that he saw at the hospital.

    2. Well, indeed it was other kid's that he saw that were in a battle with cancer. But there was a kid that I think he like a lot that made him want to do this even more. That little 10 year old boy that was just like him.

  63. What I have learned in this movie is that you should think of others before you put yourself first I think this because Terry did that he did a funraiser for the kids and people who have cancer and try to get money to find a cure for cancer

    1. Yeah, you could see that right from the beginning he was determined too find a way to beat cancer, for all the children he had met who were fighting the disease, even the boy that he met that was just like him but 10 year's old.

    2. And I also think that because of that 10 year old boy that died he felt that he had to do it for the kid. He was running for all of them.

  64. 2. Yes I learned a lot of things. This movie touched me so much. It suddenly hit me when Terry said that it upsets him to see people with cancer just give up their lives like that thinking its already over. To see them lose their hope, that was the most saddest thing to hear for me. It makes me want to cry in fact because even if you have cancer, you should be fighting and be brave about it. But it's really hard.
The one important thing I learned was to never give up. To keep on trying and make a difference. To be proud and make something amazing of what you have. The way Terry had used his situation to help people fight for cancer, that was simply incredible. He never gave up. He was so determined. Usually most people that have cancer get stuck in just thinking with a negative attitude.
I love the way Terry said that he was going to keep on running until he reached his goal. That even if he died doing it, he would die happy because he gave everything to his life a meaning that everyone could see. Terry Fox is my hero.
I feel so inspired to not give up, and those around me that are going through a tough situation with their health I'm going to do everything I can to motivate them to keep on trying. Because I hate seeing people lose their hope.

    1. I agree with everything you said. And it was remarkable too see a guy with the same disease as the other people in that hospital go out and fight it. Not only fight it for himself, but for the other people out there struggling with the same disease.

      Delete
  65. 3. Well by just looking at Terry and what he has accomplished, I would feel so foolish to give up on the littlest things I'm fighting for. If Terry can be patient like that, then I can. I'll try. Whenever I think about giving up I'll just think about what Terry had to go through and how his situation was more rough.
Because this role model makes me want to be brave and fight the hardest parts in life. I realized I have been so blessed. So I must cherish these blessings while I can and not be selfish about it. I feel so inspired to do many things in my life now because Terry is right, miraculous things can happen. Terry taught me what hope, faith, and patience was.
Now I'm going to start being more grateful for what I have, and help others. I really do mean this.

    1. That's really great! and I think I will too. We just have too cherish all the things in life and strive for the best.

  66. If Terry didn't have cancer, but knew a close friend/family who was fighting from cancer. Do you think that Terry would still run accross Canada for that special someone?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hey, who know maybe he would do the same thing for that person if he really loved them and wanted them to be ok. He would be a very awesome friend to do that, just so he can see his friend live and be there with him. assuming if that friend was really close to him almost like a brother such as Doug who took the whole trip with him, I think that he would do it. I think he would have done anything he cold to help that friend even if it meant running across Canada to raise money and donate to find a cure for cancer research.
