Do you have enough Grit?

  1. In the article it talked about how some achievers , people with high marks were able to succeed but that didn't mean the people that had low test marks weren't able to succeed in life, people did go far.Intelligence leaves a lot unexplained. In the article Duckworth said grit means as “sticking with things over the very long term until you master them" and i think that is a very true statement . I personally think you cant achieve something with just a bit of power you need full on attention and you can't move on until you no you are 100% ready . example" swimming you can pass the first ultra until your spic and span for the next ultra (ultra means grade). You need to qualify and meet the needs of the life guard in order to move on so you will spend all year round or all weekend trying to be perfect at it so you can move on. If you never try you wont move on .... if you don't try you will never move on which means you will never succeed.

  2. I read the article abbout Grit.

I do have grit. Having grit means you're determind to do or finish something. During school, whenever we have a project or assignment, I always finish it to the best of my abilities. Other students wouldn't try as hard, or put effort into it, meaning they hardly have any grit.

    1. I totally agree with your definition but Are there any disadvantages to being gritty ? Because you definition talks about how your committed for your work to be done to the best of your abilities but at times do things go wrong, any ideas on what might go wrong and how do you fix them?

      Delete
    2. neha is right i hate when i am so pumped to do a project however there is always something wrong either it is a planning mistake lack of cooperation or you did a mistake

      Delete
    3. Yes, I agree with am17 and Neha. When you try your best, and give it all you got, you instantly create a feeling of proudness. It makes you feel the best and makes you feel great. The problem is when something goes wrong. Actually, that is when you truly show grit. If you get fed up and depressed, you might as well give up and let out whatever is left. If you have the heart and feeling to keep going and to fix the mistakes, that is when you demonstrate GRIT.

  3. In the next article it converses about how being energetic, keeps you up and ready and you perform higher level of work. I am in agreement with this because exercise gets your heart racing and you are wide awake, it gets you going. With no exercise you are always sleepy, tired, dead never in the mood to do work that is because during the whole school year all you do it sit, read, write, talk not much physical activities go on and that’s why such a thing called "DPA" was invented (Daily Physical Activity) Physical activity is essential for the proper growth and development of children and youth. Providing students with opportunities to be physically active can have a positive impact on their physical, mental and social well-being. Physical activity has a positive impact on a student's achievements, readiness to learn behavior and self-esteem.

    1. I agree, and we also have gym which helps. The problem is when we have lack of physical activity while depending on school activities. Truly, school physical activities are NEVER enough. The health issues discuss how teenagers should have exercise at least 60 minutes. Usually even if gym period is that long, that is not how long people actually stays active for. Taking turns and getting lazy is a few of of the issues taking away our physical time.I would suggest being active 'outside the box'.

  4. I read the article about how fitness can affect your studies.I'm not really active cause i've got internet and kids these days (like me) really stick to facebook, twitter, myspace, and tumblr.Since technologys upgrading these days, everyones interested in having a phone or any kind of device thats addictive. To tell the truth i'd really love to go play outside with my friends, cause since they all have grown up and become mature and start acting 'cool' and stuff, no one comes out to do something active.

    1. Now in my neighborhood we have quite a few people some younger and some older we still manage to finish our homework and whatever and still get time to play outside mostly. Would you say it is okay to have a balanced amount of playing outside and going on these interacting internet sites? Or should we just always play outside and get rid of these interacting social websites etc.?

      Delete
    2. Well first of, it would be a grown ups dream if there was no internet, cause like i said children these days are more interested in social networking. I think its better to have a balanced amount of playing outside and get some time on the internet for atleast 1 hour, the thing i don't understand is why do we have social network sites when we can actually meet new people face to face.

      Delete
    3. @Geetanjali : well i think there are social networks because we arent all always allowed to go and meet friends, so internet is another was to contact friends.

      Delete
    4. What about people we don't know, we all have friends who have friends we don't know, whether there adults or kids and so we become friends with them just because our friends are friends with them, do you think thats safe?

      Delete
    5. Well getting to know people is a good thing , but i dont think its such a smart idea to add people you have never seen in a person like my neighbour he goes to hockey pratice he makes some friends there and then one day we were playing outside and him and his friend came home , we got to know each other and we arent close friends but we know each other so i guess its fine to add him.

    6. What do you think we can do to be more active and not be on our computers and devices all day

      Delete
    7. Ashley, that is a good question but, as much of as I can think right now, I can't seem to find the right answer. Actually something that I do, which may sound pretty lame to others but since everyone is different, I have my own ways. I have a skype account which I have everyone I know. It's not possible to stop chatting since there is so many people and there would always be someone online. Well, I made a new password. That password is VERY LONG; to remember the password, I write it down on a piece of paper. I change this password every week or two. Indeed you might not see the purpose of this but, let me explain. The password is really long, so I end up not remembering it. It would take me forever to sign in looking at the piece of paper and getting the password right. In the end I avoid wasting time and I get too lazy to sign in. I understand that this might not work for a few people but, it works for me. I have managed to stay out of skype for 1 month.

  5. Ya I am most definetly active enough I run 4 times a week for a 45 minutes and then play basketball for the other two days I will go swimming in the winter the other two days I just go to kick boxing and for that last day of the week I sleep like a baby.

I guess I have enough determination because I always trie to run longer. Sometimes I am lazy but thats propbably everyone evryone is lazy at ione point nobodys perfect!

    1. you go swimming in the winter?

      Delete
    2. ya indoor pool its just another excercise and if you really do swimming you will realize that is good for both arms legs also stamina.

      Delete
    3. Oh I am not that much into swimming.what I do to keep my self fit during the winter is I like to go ice skating with my familly almost every weekend.

      Delete
    4. I dont think ice skating is really much exercise because you aren't really moving or using you arms and legs that much i think skating it like a balance test but i have noticed professional ice skaters usually work out at the gym and then ice skate.

      Delete
    5. Well I think its pretty challenging. also you do have to exercise before you ice skate you have to warm up or else you will not have good balance on the ice.And when you ice skate you have a bit of fun added and its somewhat entertaining.

      Delete
    6. ........and you do use your feet a lot because if you didn't use your feet you wouldn't be able to maintain your strength in keeping your balance and skating.

      Delete
    7. Abeeshan, that is a great plan/ schedule for exercising. Well, I don't have too much of the opportunities or time to do so much activity but, at home I do have a treadmill and a wheel type thing that is like a bike but stays in one place. I use those every morning and it really helps out later on the day. I would also do it in the afternoon but, with all the pressure of homework, I rather back off a bit.

  6. I read the article about GRIT

I think I have enough GRIT because I am determined to be succesful and usualy mr GRIT helps me stay on task becasue in gym in fireball i am determined to not get beaten down and that determination keeps me from failing my goals. That is how I ahve been successful so far.

    ReplyDelete

    1. What about in your studies are you determined the way you are in fireball?

      Delete
    2. Would you say grit helps you stay active?

      Delete
    3. I would say grit helps you stay active in some cases like if you're determined to do something you will try your best to do it right.

      Delete
    4. I have to admit, I don't have too much grit in sports which makes a huge affect compared to my studies. I never succeed too much in seventh grade and now I am trying to re-gain the grit I had since elementary. Without grit, I am having a difficult time trying to make a success in sports.

      Delete
  7. some people have grit as a personality trait while others force it upon themselves. the people that are naturaly gritty focus on there faults and are determind to improve, while others are forced by there parents or themselves to improve. if you are determined, you can be capable of anything.

    1. so you saying that determination and grit are the same if you do which one is more fierce grit determination

      Delete
    2. I would accept your opinion as a true fact. I am experiencing this in such way that I see both sides. In studies, I have always been the grittiest mood I can be in. It has brought success. On the other hand, physical activity is something I have to fore myself to have grit on. I have seen myself fail too many times, that I feel like giving up. Although, forcing grit is helping me through out the way.

      Delete
  8. i read the article on grit
and i agree with it because with grit comes pressure and with pressure comes better productivity because you always want that comeback to bring your ego back up and you need some ego in life

i do not have enough egobecause of the school policy on not failing so if you don't get that 7% you will never try your best and you wont get grit

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. so are you saying that you dont like the school system because you know you deserve 7%?

      Delete
    2. Dosen't the school already gives a lot of pressure to us kids?Cause we got homework everyday plus theres a new test every week.

      Delete
    3. they are giving me false hope in a way because i do not know that i got a 3 percent however the teacher will give 40 and i will have some grit for that 40 but i will never do my best because with that false hope i think that with alittle bit of work i can pass and do better

      Delete
    4. This pressure is NOT real. We think this is pressure but, once you get into high school, they will define 'pressure' for you. This should be nothing, or else high school we are doomed. Yes, greater pressure creates greater creativity. This experience I have been through alot. It is a fact for me in my opinion. I wonder if this is true for others?

  9. I read the article about grit.It seem kind of interestingto me because i know what exersise is and what it does in school. I defines grit as sticking with things over a very long time until you reach the goal.I can say 100% that i have Grit in ever sport team i play in.I give it all the my strenght that i have...TO WIN!.Not only on sports but in school to.Never give up

    ReplyDelete

    1. "Never give up" is a perfect example of grit. When we think about what this quote means, we think of many historical people such as TERRY FOX! He had grit with respect although people tried stopping him. He may not have completed his goal but, he did so much more. With grit, something comes out of it.

  10. I read the grit acricle and grit, and grit means if u do your best and u determined u will reach high goals and active your expectations.

    1. what do you think about grit? is it good or bad to have some advantages? disadvantages?

      Delete
    2. if you have enough grit you will be interested in what you are doing thus you will perform in a higher level. When you have grit your mind is only focused on that so again you will produce better.

      Delete
    3. At first, and the above comments I made, grit was the most important, necessary, and positive trait that a person can have. Now a thought has appeared in my mind. What is the disadvantage of grit, ( Neha was asking this ). Well, what if you have too much grit? What if I were to stick to only one thing for too long and failed other things? I mean reading the articles, what if I was in high school more than 7 years? Would I still have grit or give up? At that situation, what would be the right thing to do?

  11. I think I do have grit because of the definition given does kind of apply to me because I won’t stop until its perfect or close or perfect I am gritty to complete to its best I want my project or assignment to be better than others, to be the best, it may sound a bit mean but I think that's how we all think ...well most of us think. But it’s not always about finishing it to be better than others. It to be done completed finite! It’s about being on task finding one way or the other to get to what you need like today I am sick and away but that won’t stop me from doing work I have caught up on the blog and quote of the day using my device and my friends that are at school. I am strong-minded to have it done for the next day: That is TRUE GRIT as Mr.Cheney said.

    1. can you ever be always determined to go to school ...you will always have a point of lack of determination.

when you said i wont stop till its the best or perfect...do you always have that mind when working? I thinking well nobody has the mind to always do their best work!

      Delete
    2. @abeeshan: No , there are moments in life that i dont feel like working , so sometimes i do lose that grit its not that easy to motivate yourself but there is someone always to motivate me there is always someone that makes me want to be better then them so other people motivate me.
It really depends i can say im not always in the mood to do my best work im always wanting to best it take forever to get your work the best so it really depends on how long you have like if we have a month then thats enough time to get to it my best but the less time the less "perfection"

      Delete
    3. how come abeeshan is it lack of determination, laziness or getting bullied and hating school

      Delete
    4. Grit should be used more often. Sometimes, I get tired and create a lack of grit. I submit my paper to the teacher with my least effort I have. In the end when you get the paper back with an ugly mark, you start feeling so bad, and wish you had more grit at that certain time. Grit does matter as Neha told us about her examples.

  12. I don't think I am really that active but I am getting there.I most of the time walk to school I ride my bike once in a while when I feel like it and over the summer I joined the rexdale soccer league but I still think I need more activity going on.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Its the same with me i find the more school we have the less active we get because after school we are usually just taking a rest , then doing homework or studying for test then comes chores and all of this adds up and in the ending the day is over, I try to get as much as exercise i can by going outside to play but im always busy doing homework

      Delete
    2. well study shows if you have to have about 60 mins of physical activities however i agree it is hard to balance it with school and all that but an hour to do something fun is like a stress reliever

      Delete
    3. That is why we need to find time. Well, isn't all our time taken up already? Think wider. Have oyu ever wondered if we can use all the time we use to sleep in the morning. Yes, I understand that we may create a lack of sleep doing this, but for this we shall sleep earlier. Everyday, I wake up 7 am. I am pretty sure that few people do this and others wake later on the morning. It doesn't really matter because, either way you are going to have to wake up.Waking up at 7 is plenty of time for exercise. Well, at least an hour or half. The rest would be getting ready and having breakfast. Also, I like to wake up a bit earlier so I can go thought different school and religious work. ( Quran studies if you know)

  13. I think that I am active enough, I try to reach about 1 hour of activity everyday. Weather it is walking, running, or playing games. Even though I do not really need to be as active as others, i still do try to do my best. Being active gives you energy, and helps you perform at a high level. Plus, being active when you are young helps you in your future because when you are active, it help you remember better and makes your memory sharper.

  15. I do think that i'm fairly active because of the activities that I do on a regular basis because I go to karate as you would think it's just learning moves most of my time spent there is on excercise, it goes on for about 45 minutes. It is most like tae-bo I put my hard work and effort into it, it is the equivalent of tae-bo and not just that but I also go outside on a regular basis.

I surely think that my memory has increased over the past few years, at first when I started my mind wasn't set to the extent of the fitness but now my body is used to it and can handle much, much more than it could have before.

  16. The article I liked was the one that is fit children perform better in school I liked this article because it tells you why you get from physical fitness that it to change brain actvity and better performance in congnitive
tests and concentration also why I like it is because the fitness article is that they tell you how important it is for a kid to be physical active and I think I am active enough because we do gym like every other day and at lunch we get to run around and play different types of games like basketball football volleyball and more so I do think I am active enough

    1. do you think being healthy is only playing sports and running around no, i think that it is also based on what you eat because if you eat bad but you play alot you are balanced with bad and good but you want to be on the good side only

      Delete
    2. Well I argre with you but you can put your self on a schedule everyday and excersise or do something to get active and eat healthy food regulary and once a week eat junk food or fast food and then work it out to fell and experience a healty living

      Delete
    3. Very smart idea. I think a schedule would be great. However many people have craves and is hard to keep up with schedule. Maybe they would find another way to keep up being active?

      Delete
  17. I do think that im active because I almost go out everyday with my cousins and do stuff, thats like 3 hours day/night, for example if we go out for a walk and talk, we're going to be walking for like 1 hour because once you start talking you dont get that tired becasue youre focused on talking not walking.

Also I do think that physical fitness is important for your brain but I also agree with Aqib ^, you have to eat healthy as well, it has too be balanced.

  18. After readin the article on grit, I have to say I wasn't quite sure whether I had enough grit or not. At the begginning I thought that " I receive good grades so I probably have 'grit'" Going through the article and understanding what grit actually means, I find myself unknown. When I think about my school experiences and studies, I might have succeed but, I lack on grit in a few areas. Other times, I can remember the times I have been my grittiest.
When it comes to math, it goes smoothly until I hit an obstacle. There would always be one question that I wouldn't be able to answer. Either it was the problem of understanding the question or it was not knowing how to express the answer. At first I read the question over and try to push in as much concentration as I can. Later I ask for help.If that isn't possible, or if I do not understand, I usually give up. I wait until the teachers help out and check answers on the board. If I were to be gritty, I wouldn't leave it unfinished.I would go a head and use all my time to complete it. I usually find myself having lack of grit in math.
I have always finished my work and projects. I would barely ever forget or not complete it. I have a habit of starting projects and homework late. At that time, th e pressure rises and get on me. I had an experience where I stayed up ALL night long finishing a project which I had to do all by myself due to my partner not co-oping. It was quite depressing but, I was in the grittiest moment and finished the whole project which was for two, in one night. In the end I had received the highest mark. Having grit is necessary. I had proven this to myself and now I have an experience. Grit matters as much as intelligence.
